Journalists usually say the wrong thing or come to the wrong conclusions.
Also, during an interview about a week ago, Alonso (yeah, they interview him everyday here) said among other things that the new F2005 is "abnormally fast", and that "Ferrari's victories this year will be mined by their lack of support for the other teams, especially when they are practising double what the rest of the teams are; and that I could be as good as Schumi if I got to practice as much as he does..." Strong words, really. He also said that now he's getting all the coverage because he's the best driver on the paddock (his words, not mine), but a year or two ago, no one gave a buck for him while he was battling for fourth places.
Still, it's hard to root for another team (McLaren in my case) when all you see is Alonso. During the post-qualifying interviews this morning, when Alonso spoke, they let him speak, but when Trulli or Kimi were talking, they'd just go back to the "key moments" of Alonso and his flying lap. Still, you have to understand this is the first Spanish driver to be on top in F1, ever.
All in all, I think the best thing that could happen to Alonso and Renault this race is that they lost... make them come down to the real world for a bit. In the same way, give me a Kimi victory... and let de la Rosa race, since apparently Montoya is still hurt.
Lastyly, VashTheStampede, Alonso is from a place called Asturias... think "cow town", and from that place to Barcelona, no less than 500 buses have left carrying what could be all the population of the place. Still, the Canary Islands is pretty far from mainland Spain, sadly. We're 100 nautical miles off the coast of Morocco
