Sorry if this is all gonna sound like I'm a Fanatec shill.
I've been a long time Fanatec user. Worked my way through 3 wheelbases, and a number of wheels, and a couple of pedal sets (not counting the logitechs and hori I ran on PS2&3). Never been a PC racer.
With that experience, I thought I'd post some unsolicited recommendations with the caveat "Buy once, cry once."
Wheelbase: Eyeing the Podium? Don't bother. The CSL DD is the much wiser choice in my opinion. I always have my Podium turned way down to a more sane 5-10nm; same sweet spot as the CSL DD. In fact, I'm seriously thinking about selling off the Podium and getting the CSL DD with the boost kit. There is a point, where "more" is not better... it just hurts. DD wheelbases feel more real to me, and permit me to catch more slides than I ever could on the old belt drive bases. I'd buy the naked 8nm $599 CSL DD (PS compatible, there is also an xbox/pc version). Doesn't come with pedals
Pedals: Most folks know that good pedals will make you faster, more so than any other piece of kit. Go strait to the V3's or the inverted if your pockets are deep enough. Compared to my old CSL Elite pedals (the old black ones), the V3s were night and day. Within a couple days of acclimation, I was killing all my old times. Don't bother with the $80 damper thingy for your brakes, although some run it on the throttle. The brake performance kit is worth the $20.
Rims/wheels: I've owned several wheels, and even though its ugly as hell, the McLaren GT3 wheel is my favorite and goto. Its very comfortable, a little bigger than the Formula rims which is nice, and has rubberized grips (which also feel great), so gloves are not necessary-- unlike anything with Alcantera where one must use gloves for a firm grip, and to prevent destruction to the Alcantera over time. If you're an F1 guy then pick up one of the F1 rims later. You can also find GT7 specific wheels on ebay and facebook for sale, if you want the full functionality of GT7. Also, the cheaper CSL round wheels work very well, and realistically is all you need if you are only going to play on console. If you need a larger diameter round rim, then the BMW GT2 or Porsche RS rims are great. I have the Porsche RS which I use for rally games.
Other accessories:
Handbrake: I also play rally games, so I sprung for the hand brake. I really enjoy it, and the many ways it can be fitted to a sim cockpit.
Shifter: I'm a flappy paddle guy, and have no use for a realistic shifter and all that heel-toe stuff. However, if you enjoy the feel and function of rowing through the gears of a well made shifter, Fanatec has you covered, oh and it can also be easily configured into a sequential shifter, if that's your bag.
.
Others: There are also some various fanatec mounts that permit desktop racing that all work as intended. But nuthin' beats a dedicated cockpit/rig. Something made from 8020 aluminum extrusion is great, because it can be tailored to fit perfectly, and holds all the gear rock solid. I can race comfortably in mine for hours. And ya don't "need" one of those monster size 8020 rigs. My modest Sim-Lab GT Evo can more than handle my Podium wheelbase without flexing or moving around. Can't get it here in USA anymore, but there are some similar sized ones available here in the States for $400-$600.
Sorry so long. Rambled enough. Ciao
Chris
