It was great to meet you, Martin. Your clean driving was a pleasure to watch, you chose to throw yourself off at Spoon 1 on day 2 to avoid hitting the driver in front who was on the brakes a tad early. You did great for someone with such limited wheel and pedal experience, should be proud đź‘Ť

It was a pleasure Maz perhaps we could race on GT5 sometime if you ever get chance to play :). But of course I'll be back next time it's ever on hopefully with the proper experience to get a real good shot at this competition!

đź‘Ť Would be excellent to race. PSN withdrawal is hitting hard!

It was hard to watch you guys have so much fun in the gaming aspect of the event, I felt I could have done well had I entered this year but being on the other side of the fence had its advantages and was a genuine privelege :)

All the best
Maz

Guys, I'm not gonna lie, I'm having a tough time here - I've been on a massive low for the last 2 days. I'm finding it very hard to stop thinking about it and move on.

I finished 2nd in driving to a professional drifter
I finished =1st in media to a television presenter
I finished 3rd in fitness behind a pro decathlon athlete

If it was judged just on the real world challenges I would have came in first, but I had a bad day in GT5. I got knocked out in the quarter finals - so did 3 other guys at the same time but I guess my time was slower than theirs because of my little spin.

It just absolutely kills me to think that I could be going to Silverstone if I had just kept behind the leader and didn't push. I had already lost so I wasn't even thinking about the gap.

Obviously I'm not alone, 19 others like me missed out too - everyone else has their own lives and problems. I just put so much in and now there's nothing to show for it...

You're right I pasted your quote tag instead of Dessy's, sorry mate. Anyway you should both stick around

If what you say happened on pods 3 and 4 I missed it because I was on pods 1 and 2, I think I was watching Dan Glover race? Also I think there was another occasion where the better qualifier had a second slot in that race, was it Thomas's race maybe? Watching Dan Glover's race, it was definitely possible to overtake on that combo as Dan was basically past his competitior before turn 1 braking...he just jumped on them too early and his competitior shot around the outside! But he was clean past.

Again I can only give my opinion mate, I've raced Super GT at Nurb GP/F a lot, and never had an issue with overtaking. I can understand it being harder on the day though, with everyone watching and no one wanting to be the guilty party.

All the best
Maz

Cheers! Yeah I'll be around for a bit I expect.

I watched the pod 3 & 4 race all the way basically Ed was just sat behind a quote slow Jann, there were a couple of times Ed could've gone for it but he would've had to throw it down the inside, I'm sure I would've done that knowing me and then you have to wait for anything to happen and react to any contact as soon as possible but we all saw the expression on Tim's face Monday night. He had a face like thunder when he was watching my race with Anzel and talked of dodgy 'weaving' from both parties and bumping and barging so everyone knew sending one down the inside may well have gotten a penalty. So whereas I would've probably achieved many frowns Ed looked to me to be trying to be more correct.

It's natural to feel the way you're feeling Dessy, but looking at it logically, you never were really gonna do brilliantly in the GT5 component when observing your qualifying time of 2'17.051, theres just a handful of drivers that have that edge over you in the game, therefore you shouldn't be overwhelmingly dissapointed in your result, you gave it your best shot:tup:

Hope there's another one so that you can have another crack at it.

Congrats to the overall winners and it was great reading all the feedback from the event:tup:

Daniel,i am a bit amazed YOU wrote this...

As you've been thru this gtacademy proces yourself, you know that your initial qualifying time set at home in all comfort etc etc,has nothing todo with how you perform during the national finals where you have to deal with the stress, background noises, flashing camera's,limited amount of laps, etc etc etc....

Yes there are probably always faster guys around for that 1 super lap,but to win your national final and achieving the goal of winning in silverstone, requires other things than being the fastest hotlapper in gt5...doesn't it??.... đź’ˇ

So the two days are over, and I am very happy with my performance :) finished 8th.
My goal was to pass the first day knowing the second day would be super cool and more then just driving the game, wich is my weakest point. I knew that alot of guys where quicker in the game so after the second day Qualli at Suzuka I placed 8th and was up against Thomas in the knock out I lost that race and Thomas ended as overall winner so thats not to bad .
Knowing I lost to mutch points in the game part, I just went out in the 370Z to have as mutch fun as I could have and drift a bit. After my run I heard people where jumping away from my awesome drifts
The media part wasnt to bad didnt do great nor to bad.
Last up was fitness and knew I could do good there but never possible to close the gap, still I pushed and did my best and won that part :).
I reached all my goals wich I wanted, and will be better prepared if there will be a next GT Academy.

Futher more I want to thank all the finalist for making the two days very nice, specially the GTP guys :D!!! Was a great group of guys and we had good fun. The organisation was superbe everything was arranged very nicely from breakfast to dinner and a very good hotel :). Race admins did a good job aswell. Also sending the camera guys away from the pod's when they would be in the way đź‘Ť. And GTHQ for the coverage, since we didnt get any for the facebook page :P.

Goodluck to Thomas and Edwin in Silverstone.

The comp was won by TECHNIKRS4. He qualified 11th, 2 places ahead of me. 2nd place was a wild card entrant who finished 36th. 3rd place qualified 23rd.

In the end Rutter was the only one who did better at me in the game, meaning I was as good as or better than pretty much everyone who finished ahead of me - and for me, that makes your reasoning a little flawed.

Dessy you done a fantastic job. You battled right to the end when many would of giving up.

This is a great platform for you for the next Academy. You clearly got the talent so you know you can do it!

It doesn't really matter where or how you qualify for the finals. Everyone on the their day is capable of being fast.

Cheers Thomas. Ironically it was my race with you that cost me. I knew I was screwed for that race but I never thought the points would work out in such a way that it would cost me so dearly.

Obviously I am highly motivated to do it next year, but it's a long way away, we don't know if GT Academy will still be around, or if I will be eligible to enter and a host of other things.

Here's hoping time flies anyway đź‘Ť

I can imagine you're having a tough time, but there's many of you that are in the same boat. If I look at the Dutch final, PASM was unlucky to be the first one to get out in the 370Z after winning the GT5 shoot-out, Spyrrari had two unlucky losses in the GT5 shoot-out and I was really unfortunate in my quarter final against Spyrrari.
I wanted to make up for the little amount of points scored in the GT5 shoot-out with the driving in the 370Z since I didn't give myself much chance at the physical tests and wasn't too confident about the media test since I don't feel comftable being in the spotlights. However after being falsely informed about the points scoring system, I made the wrong decision. Went for the fastest time, hugged one cone too many and ended up with 0 points (that's what I noticed after the ceremony). With the following fitness tests, I failed as expected on 3 of the 4 tests. Surprisingly I scored the most points on the jump and media test, losing much less points to the others than anticipated.

Result: I feel I could have been one of the two that go to Silverstone if things would have come my way a bit, but they didn't and after all I was the one who made the mistakes myself. So close, but with 7th place still so far away. I'm sure Bart and Mark felt they were really close as well. Competition was simply fierce.

However I had two amazing days, it was great to meet Bart, Mark, Enrico and the others đź‘Ť If I want to reach Silverstone, I'll just have to perform even better next time. I'm sure you'll get another chance too, Dessy :sly:

Congrats to Thomas and Edwin, I hope they'll do well at the European final!

I can't wait for the extended coverage of GTHQ to be up. They filmed and photographed the complete event and I'm looking forward to watching CICO's unbelievable drift and my highspeed powerslides :D

Funny I said the same thing myself, how many more GT Academys can there be?! It's such a success though I'm sure there will be another : )

Eligible? You planning on getting a karting licence or something?

Nah, just that they might not see it as feasible to have Ireland included with the UK when there will always be such a small amount of us taking part. They have to fly us over, get us taxis and accomodation. It's expensive and they may see it as a cost they don't need in future. Hopefully not.

Wouldn't it cost more if there was many people getting through from Ireland? :dopey:

haha, just joking.. hopefully you'll have another chance đź‘Ť You did great anyway!

I was about to post something alone those lines but its pretty much been said. I qualified 23rd(last one in) and ended up third overall. The gaming aspect must have been heavily weighted seeing as i made a balls of the media interview(7th) and still finished well. I scored well in the fitness(2nd) which im happy with, 4th driving which I will improve on in case i get to compete again, gaming was 4th happy enough with that. My point being - all things equal Dessy should have finished ahead of me. I can hold my head high being one of the older contestants of the group and hope they do another academy soon or it will be a bit like Mansell trying to make a return to F1 :) (no offense, i bet he nearly could)

I agree with Mark (Spy) and Thomas. As hard as it is to make the final, once you're there your qualifying times are irrelevant. Anyone who has the skill and determination to make the final has the potential to do well on the day but in the end it comes down to who can best get their mind in the right place and keep it there. It's a mental battle with yourself more than anything else. It's hard to explain but seeing Jann's body language and the way he conducted himself and focussed during the final he just seemed to be in a zone where he could only see and hear what was absolutely necessary and was oblivious to everything else. This reminded me a lot of how Jordan was at Silverstone last year - so focussed on just getting the job done.

Dessy, you put in a fantastic performance you can be very proud of. I watched in awe as you went through the pain barrier holding the plank for the full four and a half minutes and that's exactly the sort of commitment the judges will be looking for from the Silverstone finalists. You were very unlucky so come so close but you shouldn't dwell too long on what might have been. As Hugo says there are many in the same situation. I had a similar near miss in 2008 when one small lapse in concentration meant I finished 5th when the top 3 qualified for Silverstone. I was down for a few days but in the end the experience of 2008 helped me to cope with the pressure in 2010. Use it as a learning experience and come back even stronger next time. đź‘Ť

I had the pleasure attending the national finals this year without the pressure of competition, and I really enjoyed my stay.

I have to start by congratulating James and Jann, I think they have great potential to succeed at Silverstone, either of you would be worthy winners. Like John, I will be more than happy to provide sound nuggets of advice, or any answers to questions you might have. Here is a free word of wisdom, that both John and I will concur with, to get you started:
When a healthy lunch option is offered, don't shun it for the fish and chips and sit down to eat with Rob Barff and Jonny Herbert.

I enjoyed getting a passenger ride from Jordan (twice), there was something incredibly satisfying seeing the amount of jip he gave the trackday specials on semi slick tyres, in his (almost) standard 370Z! Any Silverstone competitor should take his approach, proffesionalism and preparation as a shining example as to what is necessary to win the competition.

I think the biggest smile on my face was around the time when John and I were allowed a shot in the 370. My sole aim on each and every run was to 'make the tyres smoke.' Such a giggle :D

I was itching to get back on the pods for a go on GT5 too. Unsurprisingly I took it rather seriously, genuinely annoyed at my costly mistake on my best lap! That was some top driving though Maz, you pulled out that Vettel-like screamer of a lap right at the end!

I would like to congratulate everyone involved in organising the event for putting on such a great show, I like the more comprehensive nature of the competition this year too. If I tell you what wonderful beautiful people you all are would you pretty please consider letting me enter the competition next year? :P

I didnt realise you were so strong in the other events Dessy, i think you have every right to feel you've been shafted, to be honest the game shouldnt count for alot... after all there looking for a professional racing driver not a great gamer... a great learning curve though, for possibly next time.
Although speaking to the Sony guy in the finals GT Academy isn't necassarily all its cracker up to be, the winner is expected to race in just 1 race from what i understand and thats it? but Lucas did so well they continued to race him, as for Jordan i dont think hes done as much? for whatever reason? is he even making a living out it? was cool to have the passenger ride with jordan, very good drive i thought considering he never been to brands before? was friends on the PS3 with him since GT5P, i said my name and he remembered, how cool! mad respect and best of luck to him!
EDIT-Just realised Rutter was as good as equal with Dessy with a 9th,9th and 5th place finish after 3rd in GT5 comp, the GT5 comp must have counted for approx 55-70%!!!? Finishing 10th in GT5 and 1st in the other 3 could still not have been top 2 even?... wow not exactly fair is it guys

Points were something like this:
Game 30% - 40%
370Z Drive 30% - 40%
Media 10% - 15%
Fitness 10% - 15%

What I found weird is the 370Z drive was said not to be only judge for time, but learning progress and so on. But two invalid laps resulted in 0 points so that is kinda off in my opinion.
One thing I would have like was the usage of a headset, but it wasnt allowed.

to be honest the game shouldnt count for alot... after all there looking for a professional racing driver not a great gamer...

But it's supposed to be virtual to reality.

In the end only 1 round of GT5 actually went towards the final score with the winner getting 30 points. If you finished down the order in the shootout it was going to tough to come back from. At the same time I guess it's way too see who can deal with the pressure etc.

I've only myself to blame for the fitness. It wasnt the running that was the problem but my body strength is rubbish. I just frooze up in the media!

You have to remember that this is still the GT Academy, meaning Gran Turismo Academy. How can the gaming not play such an important part when the whole premise of the competition is to find the best gamer in a particular territory and see if he has what it takes to transfer those gaming skills to real life? Have you forgotten, Mark, the last 2 GT Academy finals in nearly all countries were 100% gaming based and decided? Is it really such a surprise that it counts for a significant part?

What's to stop any would-be racer with tonnes of karting experience and some fitness have his friend run laps for him in the TT and then show up and walk away with the prize in the finals? There has to be a significant, varied and thorough gaming element to the national finals.

Although speaking to the Sony guy in the finals GT Academy isn't necassarily all its cracker up to be, the winner is expected to race in just 1 race from what i understand and thats it?

Again, you're forgetting that before that 24 hour race in Dubai, the winners of the Academy will go through a ton of national races with RJN motorsports in order to get all the necessary signatures to obtain that international licence needed for Dubai. That offers significant opportunity to any winner to impress and integrate themselves into the RJN Motorsports organisation. They have some talent and expertise in spotting when someone's going to do well in this field and I trust that if this year's academy winners are made of serious stuff, RJN will not be blind to that.

but Lucas did so well they continued to race him, as for Jordan i dont think hes done as much? for whatever reason?

Jordan is now a professional racing driver and is partnering Alex Buncombe in the RJN Motorsports 370Z GT4 team as they compete in the Blancpain Endurance Championship. I'd say he did just fine, wouldn't you?

This is not horribly disimilar to the path that Lucas took, in his second year Lucas wasn't even starting in the most current Nissan GT4 car, he had the 2009 350Z. Lucas got an opportunity to race the LMP2 Nissan at Silverstone and his current path to Le Mans started there. Jordan may well receive that opportunity too đź‘Ť

All the best
Maz

Its a weird thing pressure, I'm really good under pressure but as soon as I relax and the butterflies have gone I've ended up making far worse mistakes. The other thing that people say is to aim really high but I'm not sure about that either, I was expecting to go fastest in both Suzuka time trials but I rolled into the sand having already negotiated the last bend on day one TT1 and day two was even worse, the 370 on sports hards was so planted it felt great, it started to drift into turn one and I thought no worries keep my foot in it and blend it around on the throttle but I lost it (like I often do but didn't catch it). I was way way too confident on that one, I made the mistake of doing a warm up lap good enough for a subsequent 6th place and then taking my eye off the ball.
You need to be nervous, you need to be slightly self-doubting and not too comfortable it seems.
I had a great media interview I was totally relaxed and answered both questions comprehensively and quickly and got a really positive response from everyone, shame I only came 6th on that I'd love to know why.
The fitness score was what I expected I definitely wasn't expecting that kinda of thing, the real driving was way too over-enthusiastic and I was too excited.
All through the weeks before and through the event I was thinking about the gaming not meaning as much as the rest of it, that I totally misjudged that, It was important after all. I was only aiming to win it, Cape Ring totally changed my view point though, no way was I prepared to take the risks on the kerbs that I saw a few others take.

Synwraith said it very well. đź‘Ť

GT Academy is about taking the best gamers (who don´t have a racing license, or participated at the final before :( ), put them into real cars and look who can make it to a real racedriver.
Of course there are a lot of good gamers who have experience in karting or trackdays.
But the point is you have to be one of the best in the game to make it to the national final.
I think Lucas story is the best you can imagine for the Academy programm and all Gran Turismo gamers. Within 3 years he made it from the Online-TT to a professional racedriver who will participate at the 24h of Le Mans.
With a winner who crashes his car in 3 out of 4 races and being seconds off the pace everybody would laugh about this programm.

I´m following Lucas and Jordans storys from the beginning. Both are making a good progress and i think they can realy become established race drivers. 👍
This year the tests at the national dissmiss those who won´t have a chance in Silverstone either.
Because they´re not fit enough or not good in the real 370. So the judges have a better average in Silverstone to worke with.

I think in fairness to this whole competition everything that was planned to fully test everyone had to be thrown out because of the PSN :S, the split screen racing was the only solution available to compete against each other (I know the combined sound and presentation of information on screen didn't help towards the racing, which may have cost a few people).

Best thing to do is come back to the next GT Academy (If there is one, which i presume there will be as its quite a cheap option to find talented drivers) Bigger, Stronger and better than ever.

Personally, I Know now what to expect and knowing what the setup is like. The Pedals were my worst factor and knowing now how the pedals react to the game I hope to easily make day 2 on the next one to really show what I have got.

Yeah I made an unwise comment without seeking the facts properly, but the fact that you qualified outside the top 10 you musn't have been feeling insanely confident about the GT5 component, yes in some cases hotlap specialists aren't as compitent in a real race situation, but those cases are few and far between, Seb for example, equally brutal in both formats.

Cheers Maz, i wasnt quite aware of what he was doing, i just assumed he wasn't doing as well as people thought, when he completed about 98% of GT5 very very quickly,i thought that maybe he had some time on his hands, i guess i was quite badly wrong. I thought the guy said it was just initially one race, i guess he was/i heard wrong.
I agree GT5 should definatly play a part in qualifing to silverstone but not by such a large % maybe, considering being top on the pods would be very close alone to put you through, going by rutters overall score and he was 3rd on pods, maybe im the only one to think it but if thats the case there wasnt much point of making it a two day event. Fairer and more reliable way of finding the best candidate but just the % of the game a bit steep i think.

You still make the same mistake. The times run at the Eiffel track are only an indication of what people can achieve without pressure and with an 'unlimited' amount of time. Circumstances you'll never find in real racing events. Sebastian Vettel tries to be the fastest within a limited amount of time and with as few laps as possible, or over a fixed distance. That means he is always under pressure, both in qualifying and in a race. Nobody is under real pressure when he's at home running a TT on his PS3.

If you know you're quick right out of the box, consistant, capable of coping with pressure and happen to like most of the GT5 combo's, you should be confident of yourself. If you qualified with a low 2'16 or a high 2'17 is then completely irrelevant.

Daniel, why did you not react on the post i made?....

Don't you remember i asked you the same thing at the previous gtacedemy???... and you said you were busy??.... same thing now??...
