Been wondering and I probably know the answer to this but, more input is better, how long would it take roughly for me to get on a good enough level with a wheel - Like say, as good as I am with a pad. Month of practice perhaps ? Even though I have no hope of making it far once the real competition starts, and even if I did it would be impractical for me to go through with it, I'd still want to put my best laps forward.

Take a stock Miata (the new one) with comfort medium tires, no aids, and do 30 laps of Tsukuba everyday until you get sick of it.

I came from a Driving Force Pro to a G25. I rarely used a controller. But just the step up from GT4 to GT5p and then to GT5 took me about 3 months for each. Then when I got the G25 it took me about a month to fully adjust. Its just like a real car, you don't learn all its nuances the first drive, it takes time to break it in.

Also, don't forget, your millage may vary.

For me, Ive never played GT5, let alone previous GT's, I mean, Ive played Cruisin' USA.... I picked up GT4 for about 20-30 minutes before I got fed up with license tests in december and ended up getting shift2 instead. I really should have gotten GT5 back then.

I'll be putting in some serious time trying to learn the lines and the overall physics of the game and what not. I'd say if you are like me and have just picked up racing games, or even just picked up GT5. I would try to spend some time with the challenges, or at least play some GT5.

LOL Crusin' USA XD , I would say that's not exactly race car game experience!

My question is will the top 32 (assuming it is ever 32 again) be split into the 4 regions (like last year with 8 in each region) or will it just be the top 32 times across the entire US? To me this is pretty important. If the former is true, I know I have very little chance. Top 8 in the east coast is a lot easier (relatively speaking) than top 32 across the country.

My guess is that this time they are taking the top 32 in the country, no matter where there are from.

I think 16-18 may be a big figure. The spoken for spots would be more like the Top 4-5 of whoever you guys aliens are (rough figure). I guess we'll see though.

I think anything is possible. There are way too many people competing this year. Last year Hunk was already making plans with people in Florida in threads etc but he didn't make the cut, I remember everyone was shocked. Too many people came out of the woodwork late and I guess he didn't have time enough to answer the call. The Aliens are always fast, but with a whole bunch of people competing the results could show anything. There could be people in the top we never heard of. Ive seen it happen before.

Help please, I've checked the playstation store on a few occasions now and searched " GT academy " but all that comes up is GT academy 2010 trailer. I'm signing in on a Australian account, maybe that's the problem ? Do I need a euro or USA account to download it ?

Thanks for all the input, guys.

A Miata is exactly what I was thinking of starting out with, though on the Nurburgring not Tsukuba since I really don't like Tsukuba ;0

@Kronin - The brief time I've spent with a wheel at a friend's house I pretty much felt spot on what you described, it was weird, haha.

I wouldn't drive it at the Nurburgring, you need something with tighter corners.

My other choice would be Spa, since I love that too, and I'm pretty good at it, though it doesn't have tight corners either, ha. Eiger Short perhaps?

Eiger would work. I would avoid tracks with long straights and high speed. The idea is to get used to the steering feel, so something with lots of corners works best. My favorite would be Autumn Ring. :)

Can't say I like Autumn Ring anymore than Tsukuba, but I get your point.

Yeah, the Nurb is really meant for cars with more power. If you want to get good at that track (without cutting corners) watch this video:

I would love to see the final challenge being a Nissan Super GT car with SS tires on the Nurb 24hr circuit. It is so hard and has so many corners it is likely that a perfect (unbeatable) lap would never be posted in the given time.

I have a theory based on their track selection for 2-5 that 24hr Nurb is exactly what we'll get for 8-5. Just speculation of course: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=252203

The Ring would be awesome. I would love to see who would be the King of the Ring. The Ring will mentally destroy you....you'll be ahead of your ghost on 95% of the track, then screw it all up in the last 5%. That's when small animals and DFGT's get thrown through windows. :)

lol, the Nurburgring would make me go insane! It was one of the TT's a few week's ago, though everyone was using the Chaparral 2j, it was tough getting a clean lap.

I think I would do OK on the ring, depending on the car of course. I do a lot of "for fun" laps around there all the time.

LOL.. funny you say that. Wouldn't be the first time.

Exactly! As long strict rules on corner cutting are enforced it would a fantastic track. There would be no perfect lap. It would be about who can be the most consistent throughout. Your mindset would have to become slightly more conservative. Instead of pushing 105% you would have to progress from 90%-95% and eventually to 99%.

Which brings me to another devilish idea. I would like to see a challenge that that requires players to do 5 laps in a row of a circuit and then the total time is what would be recorded. This way GTA could see which driver is the most consistent (which in racing is kinda a big deal). If you can set the same time over and over that is better than one hot lap and a bunch of mediocre ones.

Oh, funny note about GT5/GTA rage. I have a wooden rig and last year I got so frustrated at Cape Ring I slammed the section that holds my wheel and I broke the wood off of the screws. It is now repaired with some battle scars as a reminder to just keep cool.

These TT's bring out the best and worst in people. :)

In iRacing when you do TT's you have to do 4-6 consistent clean laps (depending on the track) to make your time count. I think it would be an incredible challenge for the last round. Maybe it'll happen.....?

👍 I would love to see that. In WRS we did a 3 lap TT on Suzuka East and it was really challenging to put 3 good laps down. It really tests your concentration to push hard but also minimize mistakes. 5 would be even harder but it really shows what you can do.

I don't know, last year the northeast was brutal to be in. Much faster on average than the other regions, with 6 of the 8 final guys going on to Silverstone. While I would have made it to the finals fairly easily if it accepted my fastest Eifel time in round 3. As it was I found myself with an hour and a half left till the close of round 3 and I just barely managed to put down an Eifel time fast enough to squeak in. Very high pressure situation that would have been much less so had they just taken the fastest 32 in the country.

Whatever happens everything, it is likely to come down to one one hundredth of a second.
