I thought it was the increasing SRO (GT3/4) involvement for the 12 hours event that lead to the creation of the 6 hours for the production-based cars.

I think the 6 hour has always been there, well at least since the V8SC dropped the 3 hour showroom showdown,

The issue for me with the 12h is the money really isn't in Australia to get the GT3 grid it deserves and the cost of transit from Europe or the U.S is insane,

Though I think its time we go back to 24 hours at the mountain :sly:

How about 24 Hours of Bathurst with GT3, GT4, MARC and production based classes in a mini-Nurburgring fashion? :D

This year was the first running of the 6 Hour. But yeah, it was indeed created for the production class competitors who wanted to, once again, compete at Bathurst for outright race honours.

That's hopefully how it remains.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a grid of 90 cars. Takes a GT3 around 10seconds more, to complete a lap of Spa. And that's a track close to 1km longer. Thing is, might be too congested and too slow. I think there was a BR-Z racing a Corvette this year.

The MARC cars and GT4 cars are "slow" enough.

Even that model wasn't updated to the slim lights. I think the GT4 Camaro is similar, being the 1st-Gen.

Is the Mustang GT or GT350R, homologated for GT4?

I have a hunch that we're going to see a GT4 Mustang before too long. In addition to the PWC, GT350Rs race in the IMSA Continental Tire Series in GS, and that class will be full FIA GT4 spec in 2018. So I'd put money on it happening rather soon ...ish.

This would be so worth it for my first st trip to NZ.

Australian GT is keen to evolve its endurance championship to feature a 1001km race at Hampton Downs next year.

The Tony Quinn run category launched its Australian Endurance Championship this year with a series of four 101 lap races, building on the success of the format used at Highlands Park and Phillip Island in recent seasons.

Already preparing for next year, the Scottish-born businessmen is setting his sights on expanding the format into a 1001km 262-lap showpiece race.

The proposal arrives alongside plans for the Endurance Series to feature up to five rounds next season.

The championship will also run to a new driver grading system and mandatory pitstop procedure.

Quinn’s latest acquisition Hampton Downs, near Auckland, has been tipped as a possible venue for his latest concept.

The circuit has undergone a major $23.5 million upgrade featuring a newly constructed 1km track extension, which will be officially opened when it hosts the penultimate round of the Australian Endurance Championship from October 28-30.

“We have built up the 101 brand with our endurance races but next year I’m pretty determined to do a 1001km race,” Quinn told Speedcafe.com.

“I think depending on how Hampton Downs goes this year, I would think it would a be a great venue for that.

“We are definitely looking into it.”

Hampton Downs could become a focal point for GT racing in the Australia and New Zealand region with plans also underway for the venue to host a bespoke Australasian GT3 race.

The one-off race would see Australian GT competitors race alongside counterparts from GT Asia.

Discussions between Quinn and GT Asia bosses are underway with the two parties currently working towards finalising a date in 2018.

Maranello Motorsport plans to step up its Bathurst 12 Hour preparations by fielding its Ferrari 488 for Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes at Challenge Bathurst in November.

The Melbourne squad announced earlier this week that Supercars stars Whincup and Lowndes will spearhead its Bathurst 12 Hour bid alongside factory Ferrari driver Toni Vilander.

The move will see the team assisted by Supercars powerhouse Triple Eight at the February 3-5 endurance race.

Eager to maximise its Bathurst preparations, 2014 winners Maranello Motorsport will conduct a series of tests with the Triple Eight duo, including a valuable run at Mount Panorama from November 24-27.

The new Challenge Bathurst event will consist of two days of sprints, where a maximum of 120 cars, split into three groups, can take part in eight 20 minute timed track sessions.

The brainchild of former Bathurst 12 Hour owner James O’Brien, Challenge Bathurst is expected to attract a large field of GT3 runners looking to warm-up for February’s race.

Teams with new cars, such as Maranello and its Ferrari 488, will particularly benefit from the extra Bathurst running.

“We will do some real miles at places like Winton and Phillip Island, and then Challenge Bathurst where we will do a two-day test,” Maranello Motorsport team owner Mark Coffey told Speedcafe.com.

“We have got data comparing the Ferrari 488 and 458 at Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park, but it is important to get some data for Bathurst to make sure we are maximising the assault.

Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes will pilot the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 488 GT3

“Pending on Roland Dane’s (Triple Eight boss) decision and Jamie and Craig’s availability, the plan at this stage is to have them there.

“Jamie is a professional and after a couple of laps he will be straight in the window.

“I think it’s not so much the car which will take a bit of time to get used to, but adapting to left-hand-drive.”

Maranello will receive significant support from Triple Eight after striking a technical arrangement with the outfit for next year’s race.

Triple Eight boss Roland Dane says the Brisbane team has long been eyeing involvement in the Bathurst 12 Hour, labelling the current alliance as a perfect pathway into the event.

The team will provide an engineer and additional staff to the program, building on a relationship that has seen Jeromy Moore and Grant McPherson previously part of the team.

Dane says Triple Eight has no immediate plans to field an entry of its own in the race.

“We have been talking internally about the best way to be involved in the Bathurst 12 Hour,” Dane told Speedcafe.com.

“There is no real obvious GM product for us to go to at the moment so we thought Ferrari is the next best thing.

“It means we can build on those relationships with Ferrari and Maranello and be able to put something together.

“The idea of putting Craig and Jamie in a car together again at Bathurst, which obviously got banned after 2009 in Supercars, was appealing.

“I’m happy to just look at co-operating with someone on the day and see if we can bring something to the party.

“Maranello have a good history there having won the race before, and they have been around the traps in GTs for a long time. If we bring something to the effort then we will be very happy.”

Dane meanwhile dismissed any chance of Triple Eight racing in the Australian GT Championship.

Fellow Supercars squads Walkinshaw Racing, Tekno Autosports, Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, Erebus Motorsport and Kelly Racing are all now involved in the AGTC to varying degrees.

“The only (GT) race that a team like us should get involved in is the Bathurst 12 Hour,” said Dane.

“The Australian GT series is a good category but it should be run by smaller teams otherwise you get big teams with big budgets come in and rip the guts out of the championship.

“We won’t be doing it.”
Sucks they didn't seek out Pratt & Miller. The ATS-V would be too cool to see on the mountain.

Dunno if there a any ADAC GT Masters fans here, but boy, this final race was full of drama so far and we're still looking for a champion

My oh my, I've no idea what brilliant camera crew surrounds Chris Harris. But this video perfectly captures the spirit of endurance racing.

This is good.

Miedecke Stone Motorsport hopes to field its newly acquired Aston Martin Vantage GT4 in Australian GT rounds next year following its Bathurst 12 Hour debut.

The Aston Martin Vantage is the latest GT4 machine set for Australian competition following confirmation that Tekno Autosport will soon take delivery of a McLaren 570S GT4.

The Vantage GT4, purchased by a friend of Andrew Miedecke, enjoyed a maiden outing with its owner at Queensland Raceway last week.

Confirmed to compete in Class C (GT4) at February’s Bathurst 12 Hour alongside two Miedecke Stone Motorsport Vantage GT3s, the squad is keen to run the car for customers in the Australian GT Championship in 2017.

The team also intends to acquire a GT4 Aston of its own in the near future.

The GT4 division is enjoying rapid growth in Europe as teams take advantage of new cars with significantly less price tags compered to their GT3 counterparts.

While GT4 is in its infancy in Australia, Miedecke sees the benefits of the category.

“There are a quite a few drivers that would like to do something in the GT4,” Miedecke told Speedcafe.com.

“The class looks like it is going to grow as a second tier category so we have decided to go for it.

“The announcement of other manufacturers getting involved piqued my interest and friend of mine has bought one and we are probably going to end up with our own chassis.

“We will see how it fits into the GT category but the management of Australian GT has said there is a place for GT4 so I think there is an opportunity there.”
