During a drag race on the Las Vegas strip.

that actually looks so unrealistic it's not even funny.

Seriously, I prefer GT4's graphics, because the surrealistic "photo shoot" lighting on the tracks and cars is much trickier on the eyes than the smoothed out, highly detailed yet dull forza graphics.

BUT...

one thing I really don't like about GT4 is the real time reflections. They look totally bogus, especially when you're driving in a city track. Just try this out: drive a Shelby GT350R around New York and look at the reflections on the bodywork. Looks awful and synthetic. In fact, I'd prefer the faked reflections from GT3 (and enthusia) than the half-assed super shiny gloss effect.

One game that got reflections right was PGR2. Too bad the specular lighting was totally wierd (like when you drive in harsh sunlight.)

Oh, and one more thing:

Forza stomps all over GT4 when it comes down to detail. Track detail, texture detail, car detail, etc. Even in the demo. When you're playing GT4 in 1080i, it doesn't make the cars more detailed, in fact, you can notice more rough edges and butt-ugly textures when blown up on a big tv. Play the forza demo with the Evo VIII or 350Z, then play GT4 with the same cars on the same track. If you have a good tv, the details are much more apparent and you start noticing neat things like how the brake rotors and calipers are visible in forza and heat up realistically, how the wheels are fully 3d, indentations on the bodywork that would be simple textures in GT4 rather than actual geometry, and downright gorgeous trackside details like electrical wires, buildings stands, signs, etc. So people that whine about how the forza devs don't take advantage of the "added" hardware, just take a drive around the demo and open your eyes. It has jaggies all over the place, and some incredibly rough models (subaru WRX looks like ass) and textures in some places, but the details are there.

You ever hear of the term "nice from far, but far from nice"? It sorta made me think of GT4, cause when you look more closely (like in Photomode) some things make you wince.

Bottomline Forza will not be better than GT4 for only simple but important reason in my book.

Its runs at 30fps. That sucks. 60fps will ALWAYS be superior to 30fps. My eyes can tell and I hate racing games that run at 30. I simply hate them.

it does suck, but I can deal.

too bad for you I guess.

Forza will be better than gt. GT runs at 60 fps because it has much less in game detail. So there.

I can't wait for forza to come out! The new king in race simulators!

Really though. I do like playing GT4 but I am really looking forward to Forza. Two great driving sims is better than one and the it will only promote competition and we'll have better games in the future.

I tried to outline some of the main problems I see with this "in-engine" render. And its something I have noticed on lots of pics of forza.

The game engine has just a weird way of handling specular highlights, diffuse, and reflections. Not to mention there isn't even an atempt to try and simulate bounced light. In the end it makes the cars look very cg. The way it distributes specular highlights makes everything look like plastic, not polished paint.

I outlined the problem areas on the top original, then tried the best I could to fix them in the lower picture.

I hope this helps explain.....Forza may have the poly count...but GT4 smokes it in terms of render, and natural look (from what I have seen so far)

For Gran Turismo 4 : The look of wheel rims are not beautiful :yuck:

For Forza Motorsport : The look is identical to the reality

(N' est pas Forza qui veuille ... ) ;)

Hey Forza does look good, but as far as game play The better bring it man, because the more I play GT4 the better it gets. I like gts look better anyway I like the shine although its not as realistic.

Toatally agree about the rims. They look like crap in gt. Even the rotors are a joke and the wheels look detached from the car at that angle.

I agree that the Forza rims look better than the GT4 ones. But rims are not everything, and the overall look of GT4 is closer to reality than Forza. The Forza RX-8 has more details, but still it looks artificial.

What do you guys even continue that debate, it has been the same thing for 218 pages, some people try to be objective but 99.9% of people that post here at X fan boy, drifster you are the worst X box fan boy I have ever seen, you are comparable to Cobragt as teh Ps2 fan boy, which is not a good thing.

Just for the record, I am a PS2 fan :dunce: , but I also own an X-box and cant wait for the game to comeout so I can play them both, even if Forza turns out to be better I will still be a GT and PS2 fan. :dopey:

fair comments but i simply cant agree with you about the reflections, that gt4 pic isnt a great example of lighting in gt4 and i'll agree it looks fake, The bit were you said the only game that got reflections right is pgr2...................hmm we must have a diffrent idea of what reflections look right cause im sorry pgr2 lighting and relflections have that tell tail plastic generic pc look too them, rallisport 2 had this to, i have never looked at pgr2 and thought the cars look like metal objects

Well PGR2 is mentioned again. Ok put it like this, when PGR2 got it right, OMG did it get it right. Yes, it did look abit off at time. RSC2 did not suffer from this what so ever, so dunno what your on about there tbh. In the demo of forza, it didn't suffer from this either, so I put it down to a dodgy screen shot.

there is no denying pgr2 looked very good, i was just saying that the reflections and lighting looked a bit weird some times they looked a little plastic

i dont think forza suffers from it

There's been a lot of talk about pics for the last few pages.....who really cares? Not me.

After playing around with photomode in GT4 I've come to the following conclusion. Photomode is more fun during replays then it is on a world photoshoot. I'd much rather see an action shot then a car just sitting there.

Also, as far as graphics go, the only thing that matters is what game looks better in motion. I'm not really worried about static pictures.

either way I'll be buying forza and enjoying GT4 in the meantime. I can never have enough racing games in my collection!!!

I agree, and I will most likely buy Forza. Only reason I pick it apart, is cause every time someone says "Its gonna be the GT killer", it results in a huge let down. I hope its good, cause I would love a game like GT on my Xbox. Only reason I even have a ps2 is for GT (and GTA I guess) :(

It basically reminds me of Killzone vs. Halo. Before Killzone came out, we saw the usual screen shots side by side with Halo. And sure some "selected" screen shots looked better than Halo.....in the end the game had nothing on Halo, and was a huge let down. Sometimes it's better to not compare games, but judge them on their own merits. Thats why I enjoyed PGR. If it was being called the "GT killer"....I might not have got the same enjoyment from it. Sounds silly but its true.

RallyArtEvo, Flynn - I totally agree with the poth of your posts. I recently bought my XBOX for Halo 2, but currently, Halo 2 is my only game. Flynn, is PGR/PGR2 really good? I've never played it, and I'm kind of wondering what features it brings to the Racing genre. Now onto the topic, all we have for Forza, is a demo and screenshots. Everyone knows that a demo doesn't mean a damn thing, and neither does screenshots. It's all about the frame rate, and how great the game flows. I'm not going to even compare the two when Forza comes out, I will simply love PS2 for it's GT series, and the XBOX for it's Forza series/Halo series. A game is never better than a game you think is already good, it only gives you more.

yes PGR is an excellent game. but it's not comparable to gran turismo. It's more arcadey in nature so theres a lot more drifting and powersliding going on, plus the game rates how well you race on how many kudos points you can rack up by doing drifts, passing people, and otherwise doing stuff for style rather than taking the best line through the course. It's definatly a must own if you're a racing fan though and the fact that its online gives a lot of replayabilty and is also much more accessible to people who aren't ready for something as hardcore as GT.

Yeah I thought it was a blast (PGR2). But again, I knew going in that it was NOT gt. So I just enjoyed the game for what it was. really decent graphics, fun arcade style physics, excellent music.....good times :)
