But can you back this claim up with anything?

I've got nothing to back this up, but I always thought Beemer was an English slang term, meaning a BMW car or whatever.

Have to agree with this. I've never heard the logic that a BMW Motorcycle is called a Beemer, and a Bimmer was a car. In fact, both mean the same thing; a product made by BMW? So not much need to separate into the two sub-categories iMO.

It comes from when BMW used to only make bikes. When they raced them they raced against bikes made by BSA and competitively they were nicknamed the Beemers v the Beesers. When BMW started making cars the cars were originally nick named Bimmers to differentiate between the cars and bikes. Nowadays it's pretty moot as every man and his dog call the cars Beemers but it wasn't intended to apply to the cars originally.

If it's slang, it can never be definitive. Anyway.
That BMW picture posted was in my opinion the closest match to the toy car, judging by the distinctive taillights. Maybe not the 5 series but a BMW most likely.

Only that it was spelled out in Caranddriver years ago. Beemer may well be a slang in the Uk. I just know what I read:)

Wow, so I was right in the first place. -_-

Original Post that started the 'which BMW is it' argument

EDIT: Before I create another argument, let me rephrase; Along the right lines in the first place*

Is it Bimmer or Beemer to describe a product made by the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG?

I've heard both, but generally, I've followed Bimmer after seeing this for a few years:

:)

Anyway, I've actually digged up the photo claimed to be the BMW 5-series Gran Turismo, is it just me or does the car in question appear to be a convertible ( not sure which make or type ) as opposed to a 5-door Beemer?

Ah, that photo! I think someone else suggested earlier that it was a Lexus IS cabrio, which I think may be correct:

Same, I've never heard of a "Bimmer". What we may be looking at is the organics of language. ;)

First I've heard as well, but then again, I wouldn't call myself an enthusiast. At least they didn't go with bummer, but then maybe they'll save that for helicopters.

American magazines >_> Jk :sly:
But okay, you didn't, however prove me wrong. Lucky I live in the UK, and you live in the US of A, otherwise I wouldn't be able to think of an excuse..

still no PSN update over here.... seriously what is the point of saying the update comes out Tuesday... its not even worth it really. its up less than 50% of the day.

One month until GT5 is here! And I have some breaking news! A GT5 musical is coming up on Broadway! Here's the lyrics from one of the songs, "Supercar":

"GT five
GT five
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
GT five
GT five
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
GT five
Supercar
Do you think you're what they say you are?
GT five
Supercar
Do you think you're what they say you are?

Tell me what you think
About your friends at the top
Now who d'you think besides yourself
Was the pick of the crop?
Forza was it where it's at?
Is it where you are?
Could ModNation move a mountain
Or was that just PR?
Did you mean to hide like that?
Was that a mistake or
Did you know your X1 car
Would be a record breaker?

Don't you get me wrong Don't you get me wrong
Don't you get me wrong, now Don't you get me wrong
Don't you get me wrong Don't you get me wrong
Don't you get me wrong, now Don't you get me wrong

Only want to know (about standard cars) Only want to know (about cockpit view)
Only want to know (about skidmarks), now Only want to know (about Porsche cars)
Only want to know (about track creation) Only want to know (about Bugatti)
Only want to know (about track locations), now I only want to know..."

Beemer, Bimmer, thanks for the multiple explanations ( the explanation DaveA gave in particular makes sense to explain where it originated from and the picture SlipZtrEm provided can't be argued ), that's the thing with language I guess, when a term used to describe something is used by the majority to describe something else, eventually it takes up that new meaning over time despite originally meaning something completely different.

About BMW, I always thought until very recently that their logo depicted a white propellor with a blue sky as background to illustrate their history of building aircraft engines.
Even BMW until recently used that rather romantic notion in official press releases until a more logical and down to earth argument was provided by historians of the marque with proof to match, it was merely a representation of the blue and white checkered Bavarian flag.

Why aren't you quoting dave? Its his claim.

You also made the claim and your quote button was a lot closer than Dave's :)

Anyway, Beemer is in reference to the name BMW, and once BMW cars came on the scene the slang term continued to refer to a BMW. I guess it was only when the elitists, from whichever side, wanted to make a distinction between car and bike did Bimmer arrive on the scene.

If BSA made cars would there then be another slang term other than Beezer, or would it stay the same?

How many Mb? I asume your internet is slow?

1.5GB is the size and I can't watch it while DLing since it's more of an "app" than a video. I'm starting to think the wireless on my new router sucks. My hardwired PC can pull that down in less than 30 minutes.

I used to use wireless.. Not anymore thankfully. I use wired now thanks to a 150ft ethernet cable; my average DL speed is 36Mb/Min.
