Well I can't make a new thread about it so this seems like the best thread for my impressions about a rather great day.

I treated my brother and myself to a driving experience day at Mercedes Benz World at Brooklands in the UK. My Brother had a 1 hour driving academy lesson where he could learn the basics of driving and I treated myself to a SLS AMG Driving Experience.

Not only have I not driven a Supercar before, but I had not even operated a Paddle Shift car before! As such, you can imagine the overload of sensory information I had and what a joy it was to drive such powerful cars. However before all of that, I was able to sample the unique setup of Gran Turismo 5 they had at Brooklands.

They had a few pods running a build of GT5 with a full pedal and steering wheel set up. The only car available was the SLS AMG and you were only able to select the Nurburgring. The game looks fairly comparable to GT5 Prologue but the recreation of the Nurburgring was stunning and was such a dramatic jump from Forza 3's version of the track. The car was just as good looking as it is in the metal with the aerodynamic rear wing activating at speed and the beautiful interior modelled just how it looks in real life. I got 1 lap of the ring and really enjoyed the subtle differences over prologue; the interior camera moved more dramatically over bumps and rumble strips, the sound of the SLS was captured well and the subtle movement of the cars steering was brought through the wheel far better than is captured through a Dual Shock 3.

Despite these brilliant qualities, I was shocked by just how different it is to drive the SLS in real life compared to Gran Turismo. The experience has made me realise that although playing a simulator is a great way to sample how a car will handle around a track, nothing really can compare to driving the real thing. Despite Polyphony's best efforts, there's some things that you can't replicate through a games console or a PC.

That one issue aside, it was great to see GT again and looking better than ever, a year after the Time Trial demo. Gran Turismo 5 can't come soon enough!

I also took some pictures of the pods and me playing GT5 at Brooklands. The final shot was me driving the SLS AMG.

nice,how long was the experience/drive time, how did you go about booking that? and if you dont mind me asking, how much was the sls experience?

As The Cracker mentions, that link provides all the details if you're interested in doing it yourself.

It was around £320 for myself and that included insurance for the car and a recording of the experience.

The price included 1 hour in a Mercedes AMG where I got to drive on the 2 tracks at Brooklands along with the Skid Pad and Wet / Dry Straight. Once I was confident with the manual Paddle Shift and the track, we swapped for the SLS AMG.

I got only 5 laps in the SLS, compared to the 1 hour in the AMG, but it was more than worth it!

If anyone is interested, then I recommend going soon as I don't believe the SLS will be their much longer. Likewise, I don't know if they'll take the GT5 pods down in November before the games release.

Bah. It needs a V6, then it'd sound even betterer!

It doesn't look certain that it will make production, even then only in very small numbers for a "dream price".
If it's successful, maybe Lancia will be tempted...
 
Good sounding V6? I don't think those exist. Maybe an Alfa 3.0L but that's most likely due to the intake runners if anything.

I dunno, I think Ferrari maybe made some once upon a time. I think Lancia used one in a car they put together for rallying...



Don't even get me started on the 6R4... :P

I guess they had to draw the line somewhere, asking Pininfarina to build your dream car is one thing, asking Ferrari to design a custom build V6 with all the costs that would bring about is perhaps even too much for a multi-millionaire or billionaire.
At least using the current entry-level mid-engined Ferrari as the basis is as accurate to the original as you're going to get, the fact it's a V8 is just a sign of the times I suppose as the new Stratos will probably also be heavier than the original.

Any V6 can sound pretty good if you set it up "right"; I know that a lot of people like the 350Z, 370Z and GTR's V6 sound, which are (probably deliberately) sonically similar to the old straight sixes they replaced.
The new Audi S4, the Clio V6, pretty much any Italian V6, the Mitsubishi 6A, some of the older (Euro) Ford V6s (I don't have any experience of American V6s, really) and probably others, all have the more "classic" V6 sound.

Remember a rumour in the early nineties when it was whispered Honda helped Ferrari further develop their Formula 1 engine ( with Gerhard Berger as the contact person ) and there's still a rumour Honda helped Lamborghini develop their V12 in the sixties ( with circumstancial evidence being that both Ferruccio did actually visit the Honda factory in Japan and a Honda delegation did visit Lamborghini during that time ).

Anyway, a force-fed V6 could be possible I guess ( turbocharged engines did play a small part in their history, F40 for example, and even BMW is changing its long held belief N/A is the way to go out of necessity, read regulations ) and Ferrari did build a turbocharged 2-litre V8 variant of the 308 in the eighties, called 208 ( how creative ) purely for its home market as Italian tax-regulation meant that the lower the capacity of the engine the less you had to pay.

For that you need a proper equipment- a motion chair like this one from Frex, SimConMotion and the FFB wheel from Frex wouldn't hurt either (a much stronger and smoother FFB and ability to fit custom steering wheel). Proper size screen and a dimly lighted room. A few swigs of your favorite beverage (and I don't mean coca-cola or orange juice) will only enhance the experience.

Ha, I "knew" about the Lamborghini V12 supposedly being "inspired" by a Honda F1 design, but the first prototype was too peaky and powerful to be reliable, F. Lamborghini (supposedly) thought, so it was apparently toned down. I didn't know about the Ferrari F1 "involvement", so that's food for thought at least :P

It saddens me a touch that NA engines will probably have to be abandoned for sporty road use, but it's probably a good thing for enthusiasts at the end of the day; quicker access to more power, namely :D
I like that Ferrari name their cars based on the engine, but it does get confusing, especially with the early V12s!

Given that Ferrari's current entry-level model is the (frankly, bonkers) 458, they could probably do with a model below that, something not too dissimilar to a Stratos "replacement" for today would be most welcome :)

Strictly speaking I think the California ( although I really loathe the styling of that one ) is below the Italia but I do hope they will build a mid-engined Dino replacement someday ( could even use the Dino name as brand name like the original ) to go head on with the ( lower spec ) 911/R8 or even further below like the Cayman/Evora.
The "small" V6 engine could also be used, to justify development costs, in high-performance Fiat/Lancia/Alfa products just like a de-tuned version of the original was used in for example the Fiat Dino ( and I believe the Fiat 130 saloon/coupe and ofcourse the Stratos ).
Using a Fiat-derived engine in a small Dino-badged Ferrari might be sacrilege but who wouldn't want a Ferrari developed ( and badged ) V6 engine sitting in the engine bay of their Fiat.:)
