Um, find a video on YouTube of the Citroen by GT road car in London. THAT, my friend, is a V8 engine. Or just go find a BMW M3. Either way, they are some of the sweetest sounding V8's on the planet.

I think american V8's are the worst, Europes just a step behind though.

The V8 sure doesn't fit that citroen (As Ive said a while back), not to mention it sounds terrible too (To me), I dont like the big ugly "AMERICAN" rumble.

Nor do I like BMWs move to fit the new M3's with V8s... As the car seems alot bigger, and heavier now. Not to mention, The V6 M3's had a great (Better) tone to it.

Then what should a proper V8 sound like?

It's one thing to say you don't like certain types of engines, but to limit an entire category to one engine (sans exhaust note) is shortsighted or downright a bit snobbish. Every category has it's unique characteristics and should be appreciated as such. If I make a statement which says that I don't like V6's, well what's next? Do you like Inline 6's or do we just move on to V8's? I can guarantee you like more V8's (judging by the post you left) than V6 engines. Can you see where I'm headed? Once you've looked at V8's, how well do they compare to V10's or V12's? We Could eventually say there is only one engine, the BRM V16 (or at least other 16 cylinder car engines). Power numbers aside a 16 cylinder engine (of the ones I've heard) sounds fantastic. I'm still not talking about the exhaust note, mind you. I would just say you're setting yourself up to remain very close-minded.

I dont think there Is a proper.

Due to the characteristics of an engine, it sounds a certain way...
I dont like V8's as a whole.

This is trying to reflect what dave wrote a couple pages back..
Its hard to just say good sounding V6's dont exist, without having someone with another opinion bother you about it.. I like that he kept his mind open to one, as some people nominated some good sounding V6's that may have changed his mind, and that prior, he already appreciated the Alfas engine.

"I dont like the sound of a V6" > "A good sounding V6 does not exist."

I think its sort of 'ridiculous to choose the second ^...

Add: Naturally, I would keep the first 3 lines to myself , and write my opinion in a better way:
(I dont think there Is a proper.

However, This was done to give an example.

Regarding "Flyingswissmans" topic (I know it wasn't directed towards me, just a simple agreement and addition on what you wrote)

Okay.

I love 6 cylinder engines, they're my favourite. I dont understand how a person above me could say a good sounding V6 doesn't exist. Maybe he hasn't heard enough of them? :(

So owned. Talking about the sound of an engine and he posts a video of a rally car with a racing exhaust. If you can actually hear the engine over the exhaust
th_sarcasm.gif

I applaud you and I envy your hearing!.

Hey man, I meant no harm. You can clearly hear the intake in the first half of the video.
But, if that's your stipulation, I maintain that the DFV-derived 90° 6 in the 6R4 is fantastic. The key is the 120° crank in the 90° block - uneven firing, like a crossplane V8, or a Viper :D

Here's a 6R4 (alright, it has a competition exhaust, but all you can hear is the intake - if that counts? - on the in-car footage.)

And a Dino Ferrari, "same" engine as the Stratos, but with a "normal" exhaust - also mostly intake.

Unless you're just talking about the block sounds, which strikes me as a really strange way to constrict your evaluation of a whole number of engines that share a particular geometry (except one?). I'm actually intrigued! :P
Happily, the 6R4 will sound the "same" through the block as that recording, because of the uneven firing. It's kind of impossible to isolate the block sound, though. :(
I also can't believe I forgot the NSX...

This is now entirely off-topic. Damn.

The Ford Duratec, Alfa Romeo, Honda and basically all of the best sounding V6's have that uneven firing order. Nissan VQ engines and the like do absolutely nothing for me. Not raw enough.

However, nothing comes close to the intake aural pornography of a 3 or 4 rotor wankel :-O

@myken, a bit rubbish that the steering wheel doesnt move with the seat, almost pulls you away from it, quite unrealistic.

My advice is to not think a motion simulator as a car but rather as an equipment to simulate lateral movement and g-forces. With SimConMotion you can if you want attach your steering wheel to the rest of it so that it will have the same movement as you body but it nullifies the whole concept.

Dude, Nissan VQ all the freakin way. I was at a drift event last Saturday night and the 350Z's just sounded like pure awesome. It really depends on the exhaust you put on them. Amuse IMO does it right. 👍

V6s are my favorite engines, they just don't sound that great. The Various nissans, the c30a I deal with on a regular basis, the various j32 and j35s. If the originating person was talking about overall sound with exhaust then sorry, I just misunderstood. I was mearly talking about the engine note. I'm sorry that my feelings on it got you so bothered.

If someone doesn't like how V6s sound, then to them a good sounding v6 does not exist. One and the same when taking both into consideration.
I think it's funny that because I don't think most V6s sound good, I automatically don't like V6s. Funny how that works.

The 350z and g35 and so on, even the FX, are all exhaust note. Put on an intake and all you hear is air being sucked in, engine note still so so. There's a 3.5 in my garage, and a dozen or more vq30s and DE-Ks that have at some point and time been there, and the engine itself is bland, nothing special sound wise. With some headers and a apexi WS or something like that, it sounds good, but that's the exhaust not the engine. I've been living with mainly VQs for 10 years and I plan on doing so for as long as I can and will not own any other v6 as long as I can help it.

I completely forgot about the Merkur Scorpio! The 1988 we owned when I was younger with teh 2.9L Cosy. First V6 we owned.

Looking at the GIF, it actually seems like the, what I like to call, "Gauge Depth Problem" is fixed :). In Prologue, it seemed like the gauge needles had no depth to them, and that was, well, annoying, because it looked like the needle was moving right on the gauge itself imo.

Didn't know we were talking about how the engine sounds. I never really pay attention to that unless I'm trying to diagnose a problem and the engine is overly loud. I pay more attention to the exhaust note.

Yeah, not your fault. Mine apparently for bringing it up in the first place.

So I played the GT5 demo at my local Gamestop and it was pretty cool.

I really only raced the AMG SLS, Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari Enzo and 458, NASCAR, and the Skyline on the Toscana track.

I noticed the AI wasn't really that great or responsive to my misfortunes and if I was stopped in the middle of the road, they would only slightly move to the left or right, just a bit. While racing the NASCARs I REALLY noticed while I'm trying to PIT the AI they hardly budged. At 180mph I couldn't get them to spin out for the life of me.. No spinning, nothing to even get them to lose traction? I really hope it's not that planted in the full game

The N1 tires also felt a lot more grippy than the N1s in Prologue. But it was a good feeling. Same with Toscana and rally. Even though I was using a GTR it felt slippery but it also felt a bit grippy, as well. Rally should be really fun and while I was in the race I tried to test out to see if I could switch to high/low beams, and I found out by clicking L3.... there are HORNS! They're pretty generic among all the cars, but still they're there! I don't know if anyone else has used them yet, but it's pretty cool. You can hold them for as long as you'd like, it seemed.

Just quickly, does anyone know whatever happened to hand over hand steering? I remember seeing a demo of GT:5 where they had an alpha version of steering, in which the wheel turns 900 degrees, and the hands turn the wheel like a person. It wasn't perfectly fluid, but they said that it would be much more polished by the release date.

I haven't seen anything of it since then, and it's been in none of the demos... Is there any news if it will be in the full game???

I also don't like the sound of many 90 degree even fire V6's (30 degree crank pin offset).

Aussie VL Commodore with a <censored> 3 litre straight 6

The discussion is about V6's, you can't compare the sound of V6's to Inline 6's.
