My Home - Interaction with friends, not just limited to racing

1zwen89.jpg

The record of your playing experience and the objectives for the future in the vast world of Gran Turismo 5, is all organized in the "My Home" screen.

There are three modes that make up My Home, including "GT LIFE", "Profiles", and "Community". Of these, we will go over the newly announced community A-spec here.

Simple Everyday Communication Through the Friend List

A major feature of the Community in Gran Turismo 5 is of course the private online racing between your PlayStation®Network friends, but there is also a variety of communication features including a message board, mail, and sharing of photographs and user-made courses.

2hs5537.jpg

Your very own personal message board is created, that can be used together with your friends

n6wc3m.jpg

You can also give parts or cars to your friends as gifts.

ebeffc.jpg

Your favorite photo’s taken in the game can be shared with friends

Online Racing Between Friends

In the "My Lounge" set inside the Community, up to 16 friends can gather to hold online races.

"Rent" AI Drivers to Others, to Gain Experience

There is also a special mode in the Community, called "Remote Racing". In remote racing, when the AI driver and car set public by you and your friend are selected, an event race will start automatically.

This means that the AI driver that you set public might participate in a remote race of your friend, and come back with experience before you even know it.

You can watch the races that you host, but you will not be able to give commands like you can in the standard B-spec mode. This is to keep the matches with the AI driver you borrowed from your friends fair.

My Lounge - A Private Space for Close Friends Gathering Online

In Gran Turismo 5, every player has their own "My Lounge" racing room prepared for them online. This is a private room that only your "Friends" set through the PlayStation®Network can enter.

In My Lounge, it is possible to set race regulations and tracks of your choice, and hold racing events with your friends. Up to 16 players can participate in the race, and even if you are not in the race yourself, you can watch it through a variety of race cams. You can also participate in free runs before the start of the race.

Imagine this: You set a time for a race using the messaging feature, and then wait for people to arrive while you race free runs on the track. Your friends start to join one by one, and once everyone’s arrived, the race can be started. Friends that showed up later can watch the race and chat.

ixf9kn.jpg

In my lounge, you can wait while watching current races through the live cameras, provided with a large variety of different camera angles.

5b4ck2.jpg

You can monitor the lap times and best section times of participating friends, and of course you can also chat by voice or text

23mol0y.jpg

You can watch the race from exciting views, as if you were in the race yourself.

June 2010 (E3)

We’ve had some more details about the online multiplayer mode confirmed during the E3 announcements.

Here is the first info from the US PS Blog

As you can expect from any Gran Turismo game, GT5 will be bigger and better than ever, including everything from 950+ cars to a new and improved online component with expansive community features and custom race lobbies.

Also here is an extract from the Eurogamer hands on article.

From the photo mode, Yamauchi turns his attention to the online suite, as this is the first Gran Turismo game to include extensive PSN functionality. GT5's actually become a rather social game over the course of its development, and the current build supports BBS, personal logs, mail, and something called My Lounge. That turns out to be a friends network of sorts, where you can gather with other players and chat, or check up on their progress in the game, alongside the nifty stuff like setting up races and spectating on events that are already underway.

You really can follow the action as closely as you want, too, moving about the track, focusing in on the separate cars, and sending messages to the players who are racing, hopefully catching them at just the wrong moment so they make a mess of the next corner and dump their Porsche(!) into a nearby tree.

Following the closed door meeting at E3 Motortrend have revealed the below details.

-- Online –

- Community connectivity allowed.
- Each user gets a “My Lounge” to connect with fellow racers.
- Once in lounge, users can chat, watch racing, race each other.
- Lounge can be password protected for certain friends.
- Every user gets a viewable profile that shows game progress, status, and ability.

amara212 also pointed us in the direction of the SCEA official press release which revealed the below

RACE AGAINST THE WORLD, ONLINE
• Online racing evolves in Gran Turismo 5 with robust racing options that are shaping up to deliver the deepest online racing experience available.
• Players can join in on public races featuring up to 16 players at once with text and voice chat, or host private races with lobbies supporting up to 32 players per lobby.

In addition a raft of information about GT5 was released by PD themselves.

Driving, Gathering, and Interacting; The Expanding Online World of "Gran Turismo”

2iqg9ys.jpg

Gran Turismo is about to take off in the vast online world.
A multitude of features will be implemented in the Online system, and here's a look at a small part of what was introduced at E3.

Races and Track Days

First and foremost is the Race. In addition to the free match races as seen in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue where you don’t know who you’ll race against next, it will now be possible to gather your closest friends and acquaintances, set a variety of rules, and enjoy races the way you want to.
And of course racing isn’t the only thing you can do. You can host "Track Days", where everyone can drive freely on the track. You can try to reduce your laptimes, teach someone how to drive, or just enjoy drifting. There’s an infinite amount of ways to have fun here.

Spectator Mode

If you’re not quite up to racing on one particular day, or if you just want to watch how someone really good drives, the Spectator Mode is for you. You can watch other users driving live, another great new way to enjoy Gran Turismo.

Friends

The online play of Gran Turismo 5, supports the "Friend" feature of the Playstation®Network.
Once someone becomes a Friend, you can not only communicate and race together, you can share a variety of data such as the information in Profile.

Community

The greatest attraction to being online is this community. You can chat amongst friends before you drive, exchange opinions on the BBS or send private messages; Gran Turismo offers a wide variety of methods in which you can enjoy communication.

Last but by no means least we found an interview with President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, which disclosed some new and very juicy details about GT5.

Q: What can we look forward to when Gran Turismo 5 releases on PlayStation 3?

SY: Gran Turismo 5 will offer gamers an experience more rich, more in-depth and more exciting than they might expect - even from a series as closely identified with innovation and invention as Gran Turismo. Not only will Gran Turismo 5 deliver an even more comprehensive set of cars and courses than gamers saw with previous iterations, it will also feature new game-enhacing graphical effects such as damage, night racing and weather.

These innovations are twinned with the option to join millions of like-minded individuals globally within the Gran Turismo community and to find a driving experience to suit, whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races. Who, where and what to drive is completely down to the individual.

This time around Gran Turismo is likely not just to be the definitive driving experience but a definitive gaming experience full stop.

As we get closer to the release date more should be revealed about GT5 and the online mode but it’s looking really good so far. It’s great that we’ve had confirmation of the community features and custom race lobbies so GTPlanet members will be able to race together and set up friends networks. Roll on November :D

13th January 2010 (CES)

As we know from recent interviews with Kaz the online side of GT5 is going to be a big part of the game.

Below is from the CES Motortrend interview.

MT: What are some of the features your most excited about releasing to the public?

KY: With GT5, we're striving to redefine the racing game that we started with GT1. The game as a whole is completely new. But online functionality has to be at the top. We've worked so hard on it and we're hoping it's a hit.

MT: Will users be able to set up car clubs and racing leagues?

KY: Yes, they will. But I'm sorry but I can't elaborate much at this point

Hopefully there will be a levelling up system based on experience points gained from racing (e.g cars overtaken, distance drifted, fastest lap, finishing position in relation to performance of own cars against other racers etc) with rewards given as you progress (e.g. new cars, performance upgrades, unique paint schemes, wheels & body kits, new avatars and titles etc). This would give the motivation to keep playing online and make it even more addictive.

We need to accept that as only one person can win a race it is unlikely it would happen very often as there will always be someone faster than you but this would make it even more satisfying on the occasions you do win. Rather than be disappointed in not winning we could be happy that we had driven a good race, improved on our starting position and made some good overtakes.

We know we will be able to set up clubs and racing leagues so I'm assuming this will be supported and tracked within the game itself. Maybe we could set up team tournaments against other clubs with, for example, 8 cars from each club in the same race therefore requiring team tactics and communication to take the overall win.

No matter how good the new AI is nothing is better than competing against a real person and if the penalty system is perfected then the annoyance of people trying to ram you off the track will be negated. Being able to set up private races and leagues with friends and GT Planet members will only further the completion and ensure clean racing.

What are your expectations, hopes and ideas to make playing GT5 online an enjoyable and rewarding experience?

I'm really looking forward to playing GT5 online. GT5P has given us a taster of what it will be like but is pretty restricted in terms of events and racing with friends.

I hope GT Mode and online will be intergrated so that the cars and upgrades obtained in both will all go into one garage making it feel like part of the same game and not separate modes. Maybe the GT Mode tournaments could be mirrored in the online side so you could make progression even if you're racing online.

Killzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 both have fantastic online functionality and it's arguable that that is the main part of them. Games like these have changed the way we play first person shooters for the better so hopefully GT5 will do the same for driving games.

Playing games online against other real people is so much more rewarding than predictable races against the AI, hopefully PD have got it right and we will all be racing against each other soon

Track day is what I want, but then we might only get like private room and quick race. I hope there's gonna be plenty of modes, just like Modern warfare 2. Like Simulation mode Nascar, or Hardcore Super GT or Le man etc.. where there's no HUD. Maximum damage, tire restrictions and dynamic weather. While there's a beginners mode or rookie mode, for casuals where everything is dumb down on standard physics, open HUD, minimal to none damage. Bumper car is allowed and Punting is allowed. It will be one of the best racing sim out there for everyone, no doubt if this happens.

Like i´ve said in another trhead... im hoping for some kind "two" drivers mode ( swapping in pitstops ) ... online.. pitcrew multiplayer action ( some other people do actually play as the pitcrew member ) ... specially for 24h racing...or long endurance races ( nascar 500 laps ) ...

Prologue with private lobbies, thats all I wish for.

Anything else is a bonus, but I will have years of enjoyment just with those basics, I played Prologue online for a year straight!

I would like to have an online option to watch the live race like it was a replay.

Switch from car to car, or do an exteior view and watch all the action.
(Real useful in organized races, the guy watching could act as a steward 👍)

Needed for League Racing:

- official servers
- races length can be set by laps or time
- a "boss" needs to be given the ability to set session lengths and the ability to restart or advance a race session. Also should be given the ability to watch the race and hand out penalties
- exportable qualifying results to a .doc .pdf or something
- exportable race results to a .doc .pdf or something. should include stats like laps led, lead changes, avg speed, penalties, pitstops, etc etc

Needed for pickup races:

- official servers
- races length can be set by laps or time
- Ability to "ride with" other drivers on track
- practice should have an "infinite" time setting to allow for a "track day"
- private rooms and official PD races
- minimum length of race should be at least 10 minutes in order to count for stats
- practice, qualifying and race sessions, practice length determined by host, qualifying length depends on track
- LPI (Laps Per Incident) Rating. If you wreck every 20 laps you have a rating of 20 LPI. Hosts should be able to choose what the minimum LPI is needed to enter their race.
- Stats should be raced completed, races run, laps run, laps completed, podiums, poles. There should be no stat for wins as this will encourage bad racing.

rFactor supports online driver swaps so the technology is there. As for the oval racing lengths the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 can be each finished in just over 2 hours. There are only two tracks in NASCAR that the race length is 500 laps, and each track's average lap time is just 15 seconds. That equals about 250 laps per hour.

I'd like to see some of the modes available in games like Forza 3. They have an online drift mode where you have all the cars drifting at the same time rather than GT5Ps single player only drift mode.

Obviously you'd have to have a time trial mode too. What I liked about GT5Ps TT was the real time update of your LB position.

I'd like to see the inclusion of public and private lobbies so you could either jump straight into a game with a bunch of randoms with a different track each race or set up your own tailor made games.

I'd also like to see trophies given out too for online achievements such as 10/ 20/ 30 etc races won.

And I hope you can be a spectator during a tournament race or whatever type of special racing event PD made. It's not that hard to implement since you wouldn't be joining the race, only watch. and it wouldn't affect the connection, too.

Track day is what I want

Track days would be a really good idea, just having fun driving if you're not in the mood for a competative race.

I can see you've got way more experience of online racing than me! Loads of good points there, hopefully PD have looked at PC games like rfactor to get inspiration for the online model.

Im a simple man really :

League racing facilties , private servers (with chat) and Youtube uploading so I can show some of the good race's . Anymore than these and it's a bonus

It is very possible that online will be huge for GT5. I do not think there is that much they could do offline and consider it vastly differnt than what has already been done. I was supprised in GT5 Prologue to be able to win credits for online races. My guess is GT5 will have a good variety of online modes. However the online races from a graphics experience better have been improved a lot. Meaning that is everyone has relative the same speed of internet connection that lag, frame rate drops, and wierd ghosting or jerking of cars around the track should be greatly eliminated. Since it must be incredibly hard to create great A.I., online races make the most sense.

One thing I want from online, make the track/pit the lobby and you can change or set up your car and go for a drive or chat between races instead of sitting looking at a list of name waiting for everyone to press 'ready'. With the host changing settings/track/allowed cars etc. and starting races.

personally i think the idea of lap per incident is a brilliant idea! that way those of us who drive carefully can have a greater racing experience instead of being flung in a lobby full of bumper shunters!!

I agree with this. For races that will take 10 or more laps to complete. It would be nice if the host ( race organizer ) had option to say when check in time for race begins, time race starts etc. In between check-in time and race start, players can run practice laps, qualifying laps etc. Also want it so that the game saves information regarding the online race you entered. Lets say it is a big race, 25 to 100 laps or something like that. Maybe you sign up for the race early, run a few qualifying laps. Than go race some sim mode races, or even some other quick online races. Meaning you can sign up for a race, do other stuff. Than once the time comes for the race you are instantly taken to the start of the race if you still have GT5 running.Another ideal that I would like to see implimented is race tournaments. Meaning that someone creates a race. Than as many people that want to can enter. If more than 16 enter, than there are two races ran. For instance lets say 256 people enter the tournament. Then there will be 16 separate races ran on the same track at the same time. The winner of each race goes on to the final race. For instance the 1st bracket could be made up of 256 people divided betweenn 16 races. Lets say the first bracket race is only 10 laps long. Than the final race could be say 25 laps etc.Or perhaps how about 1 verse 1 races, double elimination. First race is 5 laps, semi- finals is 8 laps, finals is 10 laps.Maybe you want a really quick tournament with lots of people. Then perhaps fastest lap wins ( record laps instead of races ). Set you fastest lap to win the tournament. Could even have the tournament where you run multiple tracks. Than get awarded points etc. for fastest time. After all tracks have been completed person with most points wins.Just kind of rambling now.... However if they give us enough options there is an endless amount of racing that can be done.

Yeah, it would have been nice to be able to do that! Co-op races..

I strongly agree. All the online functionality we could ever dream of would be in vain if online gameplay isn't on par with the smoothness of playing offline.

How does graphical performance compare in forza and other racing games with online functionality?

Any computer smarties here? Which one is better? A user dedicated server or the one that the company provides, that cause little to no lag? In Warhawk I rarely notice the difference on both. Any thoughts? I don't know much about computers, and almost 0 knowledge about internet stuff on how it works. :D

I'm no internet or computer genius either but judging by the outcry to no dedicated services for MW2 on the PC I would assume dedicated servers are better.

The graphics should be the same online as it's your PS3 that renders everything but there definitely needs to be an improvement in how other cars behave from GT5P, we don't want to see other cars jumping around erratically! I would have thought the amount of information that needs to be sent over your internet connection is quite small (car position, speed, wheel speed, wheel position) so there's no reason it can't run smoothly for everyone. Hopefully PD have been looking at how other big online games match players with similar ping/lag values so we all see the same thing happening on the track.

The ability of setting public and private lobbies and inviting the people I want to race in. Match making system is good but you always end coming across two or three punters in online races and that simply destroys the whole experience.

Historically this has always been the case and probably still is. Reason being that online servers have better bandwidth so are, theoretically, more capable of broadcasting telemetry from 16 different players, to 16 different players. In practice the only lag should be from players with upstream connection problems.

However, as broadband connections improve in latency and bandwidth, this issue is becoming less and less important and, consequently, more games are adopting the serverless model. The ad-hoc nature of peer-based hosting actually has its advantages - no need to pay for dedicated servers being the most obvious.

Another issue that affects play is the quality of the netcode. Unfortunately for us this is an area where PD have little track record so we'll just have to hope they get it right and, if not, they patch regularly as they work to improve it.

I really hope the online mode of this game will be top notch, cause i will mainly be playing online. I would hope to see features taken from PGR series and Forza 3 and combine all those and add them into GT5. I want to be able to customize everything about my online games including what kind of cars people can pick, damage on or off, tuned cars or stock, etc. Forza 3 has a lot of options to let the host really customize the game to the way he/she likes. I want to see this in GT5 as well.

We're pretty sure that in game voice chat will be included (https://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5-game-features-announced/). I wonder how PD are going to implement this bearing in mind the game will likely have a pegi 3 age rating judging by the box cover.

If an online game has an 18 age rating then there isn't an issue with swearing but Sony would have a PR nightmare on their hands if little Timmy is getting told he’s a donkey raping s:censored:t eater while he’s playing GT5! For the same reason there is no voice chat in Home unless you are in a private space (i.e. someone’s apartment) so will Sony only allow voice chat in the lobby and during races if they are private rather than open? Maybe Sony will have a magic super computer that recognises profanities and mutes them?!

Somehow you forgot the biggest problem with non-dedicated servers, if host decides to disconnect, race is OVER. :(

There's lots of racing games with a 3+ rating and with voice chat, so what horrible world would that be which you talk about?

The worst I've ever heard was 'cheater'!... from a cheater mind you. :sly:

:sly:

I never played it but, according to the kid, if a host disconnects in MW2 there is a brief lag while the host is switched over to another player.

Makes perfect sense and shouldn't be too hard to pull of. Maybe someone else can confirm/deny this feature?

i have MW2 and i can confirm that if a host disconnects the game pauses and searches for another host(player with the fastest and highest connection quality )probably why i never get picked:)
then the game resumes normally

I can only hope that PD has found a way to fix the dreaded "Failed to Connect to Host" issue. I personally know about a dozen people who can't connect on a regular basis in Prologue. We all had great connections and room entry before PD changed to the "migrating host" function. There is nothing wrong with my connection, yet there is something about the way PD has formatted their online play that keeps me and many others from enjoying the game anymore.

Please, Polyphony, fix the connection issue !!!!!!!!

Note: Please don't offer suggestions on how to fix this. I've tried absolutely everything along with spending over $600 and nothing anyone has said, has any effect whatsoever. It is not my NAT Type, nor my connection speed or ping rate ..... my problem has been well documented in the appropriate threads here ..... it is all in Sony's hands now :scared:

That happens in Prologue too actually, but only at a roughly 20-50% success rate... since I've upgraded to better internet, it happens more often, making me host in those cases I assume.
However before I upgraded, host disconnects happened very often, to the point it got kinda ridiculous... so yeah, we can just hope PD will get it right. 👍

Edit/

@AFND : I have no solution for that problem, but I'm pretty sure that host migrating was in from start.
It's weird tho and IMO it's rather a PSN issue than from GT itself.
I for one can't play RE5 online anymore, because it's horrible lagging for no obvious reason, while it worked perfect for the 1st couple of months the game was out.

I've had connection problems with GT5P too, I didn’t realise it was so common. I'm pretty sure Sony and PD will have it sorted for GT5 although from what I hear it is more common with PSN than other networks. Fingers crossed.

@ H20HYBRID_GT:

I've not played any racing games with online voice chat so hopefully swearing won't be a problem in GT5. The donkey profanity is from South Park The Movie and was meant to be an amusing example...I've yet to hear it online myself! I have heard more common swearing playing MW2 and KZ2 online though, not necessarily abusive to anyone in the game but certainly not what you would want a child to hear. LittleBigPlanet only has text chat for this reason so I am concerned voice chat could be restricted in GT5.

Hopefully it won't be an issue and there is an effective abuse reporting system in place to keep things clean. GT5 online is where most people will eventually end up spending most of their time so it needs to be done right.
