Well, back in my previous house I had that system for my games console, and I have to say, on balance it was probably better than the SONY, but only because the sub was more substantial and capable - less of a boom-box. Bass is a bit of a personal thing though, and while I don't like lots of it, I do like a "rich", "full" bass that adds to the experience without making itself so obvious if you know what I mean. What do you thinkg about the Logitech Z-5500 in relation to your systems?
I have that one and I gotta say it's great for its price. The sub brings so much more to the experience.
Like I said, these systems have their place, and for the money I guess are very good. I mean, how much is the Z-5500, £250 or so? If you were to spend a bit over triple that, and get a mid-range Onkyo amp (607 is great value at the moment), a set of KEF 1005.2 speakers and some half decent speaker cable (QED micro for example), you will have a system that blows the Z-5500 and my old SONY system out of the water. The biggest improvement you get is clarity, and you will swear you hear things you never heard before in music and films. Not only that, a good amp will do a good job of up-mixing stereo into something that sounds almost surround-like through the 5.1 speakers.
I stepped things up a notch or two in each element with my new system, but still didn't spend a fortune. The speaker stands and new AV cabinet were the real stingers!
