I have to agree with other posts that some of the cars listed as "duplicate", and the criteria used to determine such, isn't all that accurate. However, I also applaude the effort put forth in figuring it out.
(Also, there's nothing terribly wrong with being really "neurotic" over the game. Given it's depth and such, I find myself so into the game that I do similar things, such as using both the online car database [at
www.mygranturismo.net] and a personal spreadsheet to track and trend where I stand with the cars I have. How else could I tell you that I have 68.8% of the possible Suzuki cars?)
It can't be argued, though, that the volume of cars that are only "minorly different" from others in the game is "excessive", and probably only serves the purpose of reaching the large advertisable total of 1,000+ cars.
(
It sure would've been nice if they spent a little more time on attention to detail when it came to gameplay as they did with minor/minute variances between all the Miatas/Eunos/Roadsters, or at least a more diverse lineup of cars, but I digress...)
My personal gripe (and it's a stretch to call it a gripe) with this is that it makes it that much more time-consuming and subject to errors trying to collect one of every car in the game.
(It takes way too long having to check if it's "MX-5 1800 RS (NB, J) '00" or "MX-5 Miata 1800 RS (NB, J) '00" I still need for my collection...)
It doesn't particularly matter how many cars are in the game. We're all going to select the cars we like or need out of our GT5 garages and drive them as we see fit, so if you've got that big a problem with there being dozens of Skylines and you're still playing the game, buy the one you want and drive it - end of story.
Peace...
