GT5 - The Real Car Duplicator

This is one thing I like about Forza. There is a Nissan Skyline R33 and a Mazda MX-5.
Personally I don't have problems with car "duplication", as long as each model has at least some practical or historical differences, and that duplication itself is not used as excuse for justifying long development times and to shamelessly boost the total car number (oops!).

Post 6 here. If pointing out the fact that GT5 draws attention on a scale that could border on the anal side of things, so be it.

Seriously. I have never seen a game make people do things like this.:ouch:

What's wrong with being enthusiastic about the game?

Counterexample: the Cappuccino EA21R has a different engine than the EA11R version, although displacement and max power are similar.

The size of the difference may matter to some degree. Also, were the Japanese "compacts" (more like sub-sub-subcompacts) not limited to 63 advertised horsepower, we may see a little bit more difference.

Nothing. :)I love GT5, warts and all and play it daily. I just don't understand the mindset of people when it comes to this game and the never ending quest to find a fault.

Oh, so that's what you meant, because for a second, I thought you were attacking people for being so OCD with the game.
No harm done :)

I have to agree with other posts that some of the cars listed as "duplicate", and the criteria used to determine such, isn't all that accurate. However, I also applaude the effort put forth in figuring it out.
(Also, there's nothing terribly wrong with being really "neurotic" over the game. Given it's depth and such, I find myself so into the game that I do similar things, such as using both the online car database [at www.mygranturismo.net] and a personal spreadsheet to track and trend where I stand with the cars I have. How else could I tell you that I have 68.8% of the possible Suzuki cars?)

It can't be argued, though, that the volume of cars that are only "minorly different" from others in the game is "excessive", and probably only serves the purpose of reaching the large advertisable total of 1,000+ cars.

(It sure would've been nice if they spent a little more time on attention to detail when it came to gameplay as they did with minor/minute variances between all the Miatas/Eunos/Roadsters, or at least a more diverse lineup of cars, but I digress...)

My personal gripe (and it's a stretch to call it a gripe) with this is that it makes it that much more time-consuming and subject to errors trying to collect one of every car in the game.
(It takes way too long having to check if it's "MX-5 1800 RS (NB, J) '00" or "MX-5 Miata 1800 RS (NB, J) '00" I still need for my collection...)

It doesn't particularly matter how many cars are in the game. We're all going to select the cars we like or need out of our GT5 garages and drive them as we see fit, so if you've got that big a problem with there being dozens of Skylines and you're still playing the game, buy the one you want and drive it - end of story.

Peace...

Nice list, but basing a list on what you deem as rules for a different car makes little difference to the people who actually did the work to include those cars. Think about this, if this was your actual garage, each one of these cars would be a new car. Many of these cars differences weren't actually only visual, but also interior, many of the standard cars you cannot see that at all. On the premium cars you can see it visually as they are modeled inside and out.

Many cars you deemed the same model are indeed different, the SLR McLaren are two different cars, one is from '03 and the other '09, different suspension geometry and interior and exterior cues. Not sure how you came to the conclusion that cars' 6 years apart in production can be labeled as the same car. Driving them will reveal slightly different quirks, just because you find no discernible differences doesn't mean that they do not exist. While many cars are just badge swaps and steering side switches, they are different cars. Different paint jobs, well that's superficial as it can get, that is practically the same car, but the paint is the only thing changing and nothing else. Not sure how many Skylines do that, aside from the Midnight Purple one, but all the other Skylines are quite different, engine tune, torque output, suspension geometry, tire sizes and sometimes weights and differential settings. Indeed these things make this car quite different from the regular version that it looks markedly similar to.

Nitpicking, since I'm a Miata guy.

All 2nd gen (NB6C and NB8C) Miatas the OP lumped together ARE NOT similar as the earlier ones have 140hp vs. the newer ones w/ VVT 157hp, also there is a 1.6L NB as well (5-speed). Same for the 1st gens (NA6C and NA8C, 1990-93 and 1994-97, respectively), NA6Cs (1.6L engine) have 116hp and NA8C (1.8L engine) have 128hp and more weight than the 1.6L versions.

Post 2 and 6 for example.
They attack the OP for making an effort.

I beg to differ. Saying someone has too much time on their hands is not an attack. Nor is saying someone is over-analytical.

I don't care that there are duplicates of cars. Frankly, I invite it, variety is the spice of life. I would however say that they should advertise the game as having 1031 variations, again though I don't really care.

But I wish the dealerships were organized so you could just choose the model you want (for example: RX-7) and then it would ask you what year/generation you want and then show you all of the options available, trim levels, special editions, etc.

Seriously guys, does it matter? So what if there are hundreds of cars that don't really need to be there? Almost all of them are standard cars, meaning that basically no effort was put into them anyway. It was probably a quick operation of copying a bunch of models and textures from GT4.

People conplain saying "what has PD been doing the past 5 years!?" And I reply by stating exactly what theyve been doing the past 5 years:
- Modelling about 200 premium cars. (each one supposedly taking 6 months!)
- Maintaining GT5:P. Both updating the game and maintaining multiplayer.
- Designing an entirely new online experience (it's not brilliant, but it's not the worst)
- Making GTPSP (you forgot about that didn't you?)
- Implementing weather and time change effects
- Creating a realtime deformation damage engine (where did that go? XD)

Why people always forget all the things I just mentioned? It's as if GT5 fans got together and said "let's not look at the 200 premium masterpieces they created for us, but let's complain about the duplicate standards".

WHAT!?!?!?! The base C4, the C4 grand sport and the C4 ZR1 are all completely different. Just because the body looks the same doesnt mean its the same. Cars with completely different powertrains are different.

WHAT?? if you think a murcielago is the same than a murcielago SV you don't know nothing about cars lol

I think its funny there are like 20 - 30 models of Honda S2000's

Some are legit, most are just copies of one another with slight sometimes unnoticeable differences like different colour turn signals, steering wheel on left/right etc.

You are WRONG with your list of the Mitsubishi 3000gt / GTO.

You didn't separate the turbo and non-turbo models.

Difference of 100hp.
