It's the same for both. The problem with AT is that to get the best time for a given car/tire combo you may want to stay in a gear as it's quicker than changing up.
Conversely you may want to hard downshift in to the limiter for engine braking or additional rotation/turn in or balance.
AT is pre mapped to shift points that you can manipulate a little but with the throttle or the brake but it's slower than just commanding the gear you want.
In some conditions/cars you need to double shift (physically skip a gear) to get the maximum pace from the car. Looking at you Road Atlanta and the Radical!

If people had a choice (time, money, inclination) especially for track days or race days would probably pick the best rubber they could. It does happen, YouTube is full of them binning it at the Nordschlife
