Gran Turismo 7 in PSVR2: New Footage and Hands-On First Impressions

I just got back from a trip to PlayStation’s North American headquarters where I had the chance to be one of the first people to play Gran Turismo 7 on the PSVR2, and I’m here to tell you all about it...

GTPlanet's hands-on video:

One Correction The headset does come with earbuds. So people dont have to but headphones if they dont want to.

I never said it doesn't come with earbuds. I said it doesn't have built-in audio.

The Meta Quest 2, for example, has built-in speakers so there is no need to wear any additional headphones if you don't want to.

So hyped by the IGN preview! 🔥🔥🔥
The foveated rendering seems to work perfectly, and you can see the mirrors getting sharper when the player looks ar them!
As I expected, the VR showroom has been greatly improved as well.
And did I dream or he just said that the game will run at 120fps?!

Damn, is there a way I can sleep for the next 20 days?? 😖

Sort-of. From the PS Blog FAQ:

Q: How can a game run at 60 frames per second, but we see it at 120Hz in PS VR?
PS VR games and applications utilise a feature called “reprojection.” This technique takes the last output image at 60Hz and creates a new image at 120Hz based on the latest head movements made by the user. This is not the same as video frame interpolation and does not introduce any lag in the images being presented by the PS VR OLED screen.

Q: Will we see PS VR games running natively at 90fps and 120fps?
Yes. There are already games in development that run natively at 90fps and in the future we may potentially see some games running natively at 120fps as developers become more experienced with creating games for PS VR.

Is it possible to West glasses inside the vr or can it adjust to your sight?
You can wear glasses, how comfortable it is depends on the headset.
This article may be of help:

I cant wait to look at an opponents cars on sport mode, tilting my head just above the window to see their rims and stuff
In GT sport, when a car passes next to you you can see the brake calipers or other parts very clearly and it's quite mesmerizing, but damn, GT7 seems on a totally different league! 🤤

It does run at 120fps, reprojected from 60fps.

Thank you mates!
I am so happy! What a great time to be a gamer!
Really can't wait to try it out! Now I'll watch the gtplanet preview!!! Kept the best for last! 😁

Really excited for this. I have a question though.

Let's say I'm sitting at my sim rig, with my wheel and screen in front of me as normal. Will I be able to load the game as normal and navigate the menus and then put on the head set when loading into a race, or is it expected to load the game with the headset on and do all navigation. Basically is there seamless transition between "screen mode" and "vr mode" or are they treated separately even though the full game is accessible in both modes?

EDIT: As a follow up I suppose the obvious question is what if anything is shown on the screen when you are using the vr headset?

Ah gotcha! Yeah some it can be confusing there.

second question yes stuff can be shown on screen, first part im unsure as well. I would say its seamless once you turn on the headset.

Turning 41, been a gamer for my whole life since I was 5 on Atari 2600.

And I think it's the first time I've been that excited with any video game related contents 🥺

I was thinking the same. I’m 39 and I’ve never felt as giddy about anything game related for a long time! I have no idea when I’ll be able to play it, probably late at night after everyone else in the house has gone to bed!!

Were there any difficulties in making Gran Turismo 7 compatible with PS VR2?

Yamauchi : In fact, support for PS VR2 was something we had in mind when we started developing Gran Turismo 7. In other words, it was originally produced on the premise of corresponding to VR.

This is just my imagination, but it seems that many titles are retrofitted with VR support. However, we also had a hard time with Gran Turismo Sport, and it's very difficult to make an existing title compatible with VR later.

Therefore, "Gran Turismo 7" was created as "VR native" in advance. Think of this as almost synonymous with running the game at 4K60p (*). In order to move the image with that image quality and speed, you have to make the data fairly light.

Therefore, the most difficult aspect of development was maintaining image quality without increasing the load when moving images. However, thanks to that, the support for PS VR 2 went smoothly.

I'm glad Sony is offering quality VR for console users. 500 for a PS5 and 550 for the PS VR2 comes in around the same price for just a Valve Index. Not counting the 2000+ dollar PC you will need to run it smoothly. It also makes me annoyed because I own an Index and a good PC. This is just proving that eventually consoles will make PC's obsolete, or an extremely niche gaming choice.

So GT7 ends up beeing a not only a system seller but also the main reason to get a PSVR2, and i am out of money.. argh!
Haha this game has cost me a bit over the last year. Bought a GT DD Pro bundle + some wheels. Now PSVR2 and finally got the seat attachment for my wheel stand. Been using a wheel for years but let my iRacing sub end awhile back and my rift broke during covid. My son likes to play too so definitely looking forward to this and have been for awhile.

Seems like Sony have hit a new level in design and implementation of VR and the headset, I'm very impressed indeed.

It's expensive and might not sell great but I think this level of quality is needed and should filter down over time. My take on VR and since the days of the original Oculus dev kit is it will have to keep on trucking for a few years yet.
