1) the hype of the car.
2) the amount of these cars on the road.

Yes, you know, because hype and quantity are perfectly valid reasons to call it overrated, disregarding completely it's capabilities and atributes. Brilliant 👍

As far as 4 door saloons go, this must be sub zero. The last good looking M5 and the fact someone could mistake it for something slower makes it even cooler to me.

It's a meh from me, I find the appeal of a lot of bimmers a little bewildering. I love a lot of older models from the 80s and earlier but since perhaps the mid-90s they've just all looked very bland and samey to me. I've no doubt they are wonderfully engineered, but I need a little more than that.

It seems strange to me when people bleat on about a single iteration of a single series of BMW or Merc missing from this or that game, completely ignoring a ton of wonderful exotica, classic cars and such. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Also BMWs are very common in the UK and to me smack of a lack of imagination and originality.

I love even the standard E39s. I was quite close to buying a 540i M-Sport if SIC EM hadn't existed.

The M5s though have quite a big reputation here...probably why they cost about 3 times as much as a normal E39.

Gorgeous, brawny, and agile for its considerable weight. As with a few others here, I prefer the E34, but this is still a Sub Zero for me.

Seen one yesterday and I was the only person apart from the driver that could tell that it was an M5. Cool, cause it doesn't show off to be taken seriously.

I agree 100% Love these cars. I would love one as a daily.

They rock, get a ride in one and I bet you will change your mind.
Maybe but I could care less about how it looks honestly. 4 doors = ew

Impossible. It's a BMW.
HUH? They aren't that uncommon here but its not like most people(IE NON Car people) associate BMW with fast cars. Just nice Luxury cars. Maybe its just an American view of them?

Awesome Q car that struck the perfect balance between practically and sporty. Subtle to most people, but instantly recognizable to those in the know. Classically handsome yet still modern. Since it's the 5 and not the 3, most spoiled brats stayed away from it, preventing its reputation from being significantly tarnished. IMO, this M5 is probably one of the best BMWs ever made.

Absolutely sub zero.

My favorite M5 ever instant sub-zero and I hate BMW, but I think this is their greatest and one of the best cars ever made. Especially when you read the history on it.

There's a ton of variations of 302 cubic inch V8s, doesn't matter where they came from.
