I think it's almost cool, but there are better options for a RWD luxury sedan, so Meh it is.

I would normally vote "meh" because this car evokes almost zero emotion and it looks like someone walked into the dealer and ordered it by the foot off a big spool of beige Infiniti fabric. But being a Nissan knocks it into uncool.

So what Q is this in relation to all the other Qs?

Uncool.

...it looks like a lumpy fat kid, the kind whose face is so fat their eyes look squinty all the time. And, once you get past the grill and headlights, the rest of it is utterly bland; if you slap another front end on it, it could be just about any current four door on the face of the planet.

Seriously Uncool.

Isn't electric power steering just a standard power steering unit? Or am I mistaken?

Had it been the Eau Rouge it would be cool. However it isn't, therefore earning no more points than a standard 530i. Meh.

Sorry but I'm not sure why the Eau Rouge would be cool. I've seen many people claiming that if it were produced it would be cool, yet it meets most of the unofficial, as established by most GTP members, criteria that would automatically make it uncool: you'd have to explain its name, which would lead to explaining auto racing, which would lead to even more explaining. Then, IMO, almost anybody who drove it would look like an automatic d-bag. It also follows the same line that many Nürburgring edition cars follow, which aren't cool either. And there's very little actual F1 technology in the car, despite massive boasting by Infiniti, which is uncool. The only thing that would make it somewhat cool is the rumored 500+ hp it would get, plus the input from Vettel.

I've not double-checked this so I'm open to correction, but the Q50 might be the car that Infiniti has experimented with drive-by-wire steering on.

In other words, every response you make to the steering wheel is replicated electronically at the steering rack, rather than down a column. Though for safety purposes the car still features a steering column and a clutch that engages it should it be required.

From what I've heard of the system (not yet driven it myself), opinions are mixed. Because it's an early system it's pretty ruinous for feel, but it does have surreal qualities like being able to totally filter out the effects of potholes, or cobbled roads, or stuff like that. I.e. there's zero kickback, though the car does respond to your own movements.

Hfs is correct, this car does has steer by wire and his explanation of how it works is correct as well.

It should be noted that SBW and standard electric power steering are not the same thing and that power steering does not have to be electric. Part of what makes the difference between the new wrx and sti is the wrx using electric and the sti using hydraulic power steering (along with the insanely quick steering ratio, the sti looks to be quite the driver's car).
