How did I miss this thread??
Former SVX owner here, as some already pointed out. Obviously, I have to give it a rating that transcends sub-zero. I'll call it "Absolute Zero".
It's not overly fast, no, and Subaru didn't have a manual capable of reliably handling 230 bhp in 1991. I suppose they could have engineered one if they truly believed in the car, but they already took a loss of several grand on each car as I remember. But for the enthusiast, the 5-speed Impreza RS and WRX transmission are a fairly straightforward swap - a crossmember and pedal assembly is the only major fabrication needed. The DCCD 6-speed from the STI has been done as well. Turbo and Supercharged engine builds have put it in the 4.5-to-60 range.
Despite this, it had its problems (flawed OEM automatic, bad rear bearings, high front brake wear, etc), which is why I no longer own it. The fat maintenance budget simply didn't permit keeping it. I described it somewhere else as a bit like owning an Alfa Romeo - it'll give you headaches during the day, but at night you just can't help yourself from getting up and staring out your window at it sitting in the driveway. The ride was excellent, the handling was quite good for a heavy GT, and the interior was fantastic for the time, save for cheap wood-effect dash inserts for which there are aftermarket solutions. The windows served an aerodynamic purpose (the glass-to-glass canopy design produced a sub-.30 cd), and had the pleasant side effect of allowing you to cruise at highway speeds with the windows down without having to shout to talk to your passenger. Drive-thrus sucked, yes, but who among us couldn't stand to avoid drive-thrus more often?
I miss it and constantly look at them on Autotrader ... I'll probably succumb one day, but for now my trusty Outback is going to have to suffice.
