Crap.....I think my PS3 just died. Shut off after the race and now the red light is blinking. 3 beeps.

And....a quick yellow light. I'm guessing this is the YLOD?

The worst part is....it let me finish the race. Got my credits, then blammo. It's like it was mocking me.

Yeah, still dead, even after a substantial cool down. Even if I get a new slim tomorrow I still won't have the time to get a car and make the race.

I can't believe this...

Well that should be good for a 1:50 or so online. :ouch: This difference in physics is horrid.

From practicing both online and offline today, I actually managed similar times after adjusting the setup.

It's starting to become known that a few settings react backwards to what you would expect in real life, specifically ride height and spring settings. You would think a lower front would put more weight on the front wheels promoting oversteer, but it seems to be the opposite.

Offline I was running 15 points lower in the rear than the front and the car was nicely neutral, with very slight lift-off oversteer perfect for turn-in.
Online, I'm running only 5 points lower in the rear, and took the rear toe from -0.05 to 0.00.

Fastest offline lap: 1'47.800
Fastest online lap: 1'47.9xx (can't exactly remember as it was a clean air mid race lap).
Fastest online lap w/draft: 1'47.488 (thanks for the tow EL_ZISSOU :))

I'll post up my settings later, PS3 is off right now. It's basically Turbo's settings, but with the ride height at -5 front, -20 rear for offline, and -10 front, -15 rear for online (plus the above toe setting change).

I can't wait for Zissou to post up a video, lol.

Heh heh, sorry for the delay, I didn't get to try this week's combo until tonight. Better than 5 minutes before race time like last week! :embarrassed:

Any setups to share for us tuning dummies? :)

I'm not sure if you need help in the tuning department, you seem plenty fast already! 👍

Here's what I'm currently running online at the Nurburgring GP/D:

Ride height F: -10 R: -15
Springs F: 13.0 R: 5.8
Extension F: 4 R: 3
Compression F: 3 R: 2
Swaybars F: 5 R: 2
Camber F: -2.2 R: -1.8
Toe F: -0.02 R: 0.00
Brakes F: 5 R: 2

I'm sure it's mostly driving skill, but what setup are you running to get those times EL_ZISSOU?

When he ask me for a tune I usually just send him random numbers in hopes to slow him down a little. :sly:

Three beeps is good. It means its recoverable with some ninja skill. There is a video on youtube i think on how to fix it if you get the three beeps (I think). Also I have a 91 i could gift you in case of emergency. Its not too quick but is better than nothing.

I got the YLOD and 2 beeps. I ended up sending mine in for 150$ and now it runs like new.

Yeah that sucks man.

The videos on youtube looks pretty legit. I repair industrial robot controllers and use the same techniques to get them back up and running.

One comment mentions using the oven around 450* instead of the heat gun option.
Might be worth a try.

This guys fix procedure, other than laying the board on a static charged carpet, is pretty good.

This kind of stuff scares me, because my system has been running all day. (older 60GB model) I do keep a small house fan running and pointed right at the system most of the time, hoping that helps it stay alive.

You're such a spirit breaker, dude. lol. 1:46 is awesome!

I can gift you a car with 138hp. It's no problem to help a fellow mazda enthusiast out!

PS - I went to an indoor kart facility last night with a 45mph max and was cock blocked every single lap preventing me from making good times. Fun stuff. Everyone commented that I looked beastly passing everyone in seemingly odd places, lol. GT5 skills ftw:gtpflag:

Thanks for the support guys, just like the real SM community people do what they can to make sure everyone gets a shot to race, even if it means lending parts and virtual cars (in our case). :dopey:

I think I am going to head to Costco and see what they have for Slim models, we've got a nice credit that may cover the majority of the cost. I also have been doing the USB backups every night I turn my system off, so if that works as it should the most I should lose would be the changes I made on my setup last night.

Depending on how my day goes there is a small possibility that I may be on track with you dudes tonight.

Cheers!

SpecMiata- let us know if you get back up and running so we can gift you some stuff to get you back in action.

Actually with 3 Beeps you can get to a recovery screen without the huge re-flow. i tried the reflow and all it did for me was allow a back-up. and if you have you files backed up you will be fine.

Toe F: -0.02 R: 0.00

Thank you thank you! I had a tough time when switching from offline to online, as others had mentioned. I think I dropped off by about half a second. I was hoping someone would post their online tune. Many thanks, I can't wait to try it.

I had good luck with a few tunes offline - in fact I was able to achieve about the same time regardless which tune I used, which made me feel like even more of a tuning dummy - but that lap was done using the presciption from the good doctor. :)

Ride height F10 R-25

Springs F12.5 R5.8
Extention F9 R6
Compression F2 R6
Swaybars F4 R3
Camber F-2.0 R-1.5
Toe F-0.2 R-0.35

Still needs a bit of work but was good for a 1:47.94 in offline practice a little bit ago.

I really hope to quit putting it off and learn how to tune someday. I always feel a little inadequate asking for others' tunes. :nervous:

IS that line through the chicane ok for qualifying and race? I thought we had to keep two on the tarmac, or is 2 on the curb ok?

To my best understanding, we only need to keep 2 wheels on the curb. The other 2 can be on the grass if you so desire. If you put the entire car on the grass it gives you a penalty.

From the GTP Qualifier thread:

OLR Rules:

Standard clean OLR rules apply:

  • 2 wheels on (or vertically in line with) the track at all times
  • Rumble/ripple strips are part of the track
  • No contact with walls or objects, visible or invisible
  • If you're not 100% sure that your lap is clean, then consider it dirty
  • No hybrids
  • No cheating of any kind
  • Nothing that goes against the spirit of the game
  • Anything we haven’t thought of that could be construed as cheating

OR

From the SCCA Rulebook:

6.11.3. Off-Course Excursions
Drivers are required to follow the pavement or marked course, and may not gain an advantage from an off-course excursion. Unless the Supplemental Regulations specify otherwise, a driver who leaves an artificially marked course or an airport circuit with all four wheels must reenter the course at the same location where he went off, subject to the directions of officials controlling reentry.

This translates to English as: Yes. :)

I don't do it because it upsets my car too much.

Also, note to SONIC: Please do not draft dodge down the straightaways. I watched you do it a couple times last night down the front stretch. It's not allowed.

Thanks for the Best Buy tip El Z, with that $50 gift card I bought the $60 2 year insurance policy from Best Buy, which was most likely a huge waste of money. I got myself a new 160GB Slim Shady and it's doing the 1.05 update now. My fingers are crossed that my neurotic game save backup-ing will work.

I'll let you dudes know. Thanks again!

Sweet! If not, dude just let me know what color and wheels you want on your Miats and I'll go outfit one to spec and send it along. I'll even road test it for you to add a few break-in miles :D

Great news, besides a few things missing like photos, replays, and some of the small car avatars in the garage, I'm 100% back in business!

Also, thanks TT97 for the Lexus. I can give it back if you need it.

Thanks everyone, see you guys tonight!

That was pretty much what I was getting at, sorry for the long winded response without the conclusion. The game is pretty good at penalizing you in the chicane, so the lap would automatically be void if you cut there.

Also, note to SONIC: Please do not draft dodge down the straightaways. I watched you do it a couple times last night down the front stretch. It's not allowed.

That would be covered in this part of the GTP OLR:

"Leading cars have the right to choose their own line down a straight. They can change their racing line once while driving down a straight (Move from the outside line to the inside, or vice versa). As they approach the next corner, they can return to the racing line of their choice However, they're not allowed to change their line when the behind driver is directly behind and changes his line to try and make a pass. If your movement causes an accident, you're responsible."

I think we should all take the time to read through the entire OLR before today's race. There seems to be some differing thoughts on what constitutes right of way when it comes to passing. Section "08: Corner Rights" gives a good explanation of this, better than FIA or SCCA rules in fact 👍

Since today's race also includes pit stops, the OLR also has a whole section on that too.

It's Turbo's series, so I'll let him make the ultimate decision on the rules, but it's my understanding that we are following the GTP OLR for race conduct.
