So why bother making an obviously craptacular movie, anyhow? Maybe I'm slighting the genre as a whole with this statement, but how come horror movies can get away with "being bad for the sake of bad" and other genres can't?
Because no other genre has existed in the low-budget margins the way horror has. Nobody makes shoestring-budget romantic comedies, and if they do, there's no tale to tell about them. But Romero pulled off Night Of The Living Dead for almost nothing. Heck, in the original Mad Max (not exactly horror), that's the producer's own, personal van/caravan rig that gets mangled in the opening scene.

Eventually it became a kind of badge of honor and an in-joke. It's also rather parallel to the pornography industry, of course, except substituting graphic violence and shock for graphic sex.

Not all horror movies get away with it, either: Snakes On A Plane, for instance, was made with absolutely no integrity or self respect, and it was much the worse for it.
