GTP_WRS-Online Event 42 : Nada Neon - Nov 8th/12th

Sorry to hear that. Were you in front of Lucas or behind?

Great race otherwise.

Well behind. I had a stupid screw up on the 3rd lap and dropped to dead last. I think I had just passed Ruz and Bayz right before I dc'd. I was holding out some hope of catching back up with the pack but even that was a long shot.

Couple pics, I guess you can go through the 1st chicane 2-wide. @Meister Fetz and me, keeping it clean. 👍 I know that was a bit rude of me, after you'd passed me on the straight, but appreciate the battle. :)

WHAT A RACE!

Had to watch this race 3 times this morning .

1st time : on board my car and you truly get a view of how much speed and race craft @Animera has
:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:.

2nd time: on board Ian's car and wow was I driving like a man possessed.
At every possible chance to make a pass I took it ,only bad moment was missing a downshift at the hair pin on lap 27 and nudging him off the apex :banghead: .

3rd time : the replay camera and you truly get a view of the battle we had ,side by side in turn one and the chicane multiple times (almost every lap)
Side by side exits at the hair pin and on the run up to t3 .
And the best part of the race for me side by side through the entire t3 and all the way in to the chicane .

The only other race I've had like that was the HSV at silverstone where @Friday_GTRP was all over me for 27 laps .

Nice 3rd for @Gravitron not to far behind me and Ian just incase we tripped up over each other

Great effort from @MadMax for the zero stopper unlucky to drop off in last few laps didn't think anyone would try it.

What a result from @mr_lab_rat from 12th to 4th great effort that pace was great .

Another great event by:gtpflag:

Now for the EU race and to take me normal pace slap from @PASM ;)

That was perfectly clean @Gravitron Lucas! I was too late on the brakes. luckily Pekka @MadMax pushed me right back to your bumper after the chicane's exit :) That was an awesome first stint we 3 had with @Tuesday_Black - not a single turn to relax a bit 👍👍
Trying to catch up to Mike @mr_lab_rat after the pit stop makes that race one of the funniest I've ever done - very intense from start to finish line :gtpflag::cheers:

You're far too modest @skyline1683 so I'll have to remedy that. :)
The closeness of the racing and the side by side action are evidence of your racecraft, speed and situational awareness. I could put my car into spaces only because I trusted that you knew where I was.
This race was a highlight of my racing this year!

As for my pitcrew, they have been severely reprimanded!

Anyone motivated for a little practice run?

Here is the race report from my point of view:

I arrive at the Apricot Hill, the racing venue hosting a special event today. It will be another race of factory stock cars and today we are lucky enough to drive Honda's highest performance front wheel drive coupe - the Integra Type R (known as Acura RSX Type S in North America). With all cars being identical the race will be decided by driver's skills only.
I'm aiming for a finish in top 10 but it won't be easy as the event attracted an all-star line up of 14 racers.

Qualification:

We start very early in the morning and I struggle with visibility. With only three hot laps in the session I'm unable to run a top 10 lap time and finish 12th.

Apricot Hill Raceway_0.jpg

Start:

It's still dark when we take off on the formation lap but it gets better just as we cross the line for a flying start. I get hit in the very first turn but the impact is not enough to push me off the track so it's just cosmetic damage to my sparkling orange paintjob. I spend the first lap in 12th place behind Ruz (@Iceman220).

Apricot Hill Raceway_1.jpg

The accident:
I can see Ruz wanting to go faster but there is a long line up in front of him and everyone is fighting for positions. I can't see it yet but at the top of the hill Stephen (@alexamenos) runs side by side with Danny (@Friday_GTRP ) and drops two wheels off the track at very high speed. Cloud of dust raises up and the sand starts to pull his car to the side. He tries to bring it back onto the track and hits the brakes. The difference in grip between left tires on the pavement and right tires on grass sends the car back on the track sideways, all four wheels skidding at 200kmh. He hits Danny's car and sends him into a spin. At this point I get to the top of the hill and see the carnage. Stephen's car skidding head on towards a guard rail and Danny's car going backwards along the track with smoke pouring from underneath of his locked up tires. Everyone else makes it through safely and I'm relieved to see both drivers are ok and re-entering the track behind me.

More trouble:
A small groups forms in front of me. Paul (@bayz0007), Patrick (@GTP_Patrick1), and Ruz. Patrick is trying to find his way around Paul who is driving defensively and Ruz is running out of patience. There is no way I can get by them when they run side by side so I keep waiting in 10th place for the right opportunity.

It comes up on lap 4 when Ruz brakes too late for the downhill hairpin. He moves inside to avoid hitting Patrick's car but ends up on the grass and loses control. With no way to slow down or steer the car he hits Patrick at the apex of the hairpin. Patrick's tires are already at the edge of traction so the impact pushes him off the track into a sand trap. The second accident allows me to move up into 8th spot behind Paul.

Three way battle:
I spend a lap behind Paul and look for opportunities to pass. I notice he takes very defensive inside line into the hairpin. I set up for a classic outside inside late apex move but he somehow makes it stick and shuts the door on exit. It looks like I'm in for a lesson in defensive driving. I manage to pull up beside him on the start-finish straight but back off as I don't want to go through turn one side by side.

I keep trying for three more laps and our fight allows Danny to catch up to us. He capitalizes on my mistake on lap 8. I try to set up for a pass in the final sector of the track but I cut the corner too much and get slowed down by deep sand.

Apricot Hill Raceway_16.jpg

Danny and Paul put on a great show as they trade places for next three laps. I have no problem keeping up with them but passing two black Integras going side by side is even harder than passing one. I know I can make my tires last about 20 laps so I decide to pit early and make the second stint longer.

Apricot Hill Raceway_19.jpg

The strategy game:
It's lap 13 of 31. I come out of the pits in 13th place but I'm running in clean air. Most drivers will probably pit around lap 16 so I should have three laps on fresh tires to make up some time. The strategy works better than expected. Everyone but Pekka (@Mad Max) pits by lap 18 and I find myself in 5th place! I might pay the price at the end of the race as everyone will have better tires than me but I'll do my best to keep them behind me.

Apricot Hill Raceway_21.jpg

Bringing it home:
Ian and Steve are fighting for the lead far ahead of me. Lucas in fourth place is closing in on Pekka who decided to run the whole race on one set of tires. Stefan (@Meister Fetz) is slowly reeling me in but it doesn't look like he will have enough time to catch me before the end. I catch up to Pekka at the end of lap 29.

Apricot Hill Raceway_24.jpg

His tires are down to almost nothing and he struggles to find enough grip. I pass him quickly and hope he can hold up Stefan as my advantage is down to 1.5 seconds and he is almost close enough to catch my draft. But it only takes him four turns to get by Pekka and I can see the white Integra closing in again.
My tires are losing grip very fast now but I cross the finish line almost 2 seconds ahead of Stefan and we are on the final lap. He pushes hard but the gap is just too much to close in just one lap.

Apricot Hill Raceway_26.jpg

Checkered flag:
I cross the line in 4th place, 20 seconds behind the leaders and 10 seconds behind third place Lucas. This was one of the most exciting races of my short career. To come up from 12th place through the field of very fast drivers exceeded anything I could have dreamed of.

Great read/pics, and great job on that race, Mike. :)

Congrats Ian and Steve on the 1st/2nd.

I personally was pretty lucky that @Tuesday_Black's and @Meister Fetz's passes on me ended with them slowed by sand in the first chicane. For the races on Wednesday, remember that the Weak draft means you'll be going into that braking zone faster than normal. ;)

Signed in for the EU race, then I looked at the entries and found that GTP_GhostDriver has the same colour scheme and race number so I'll choose Red car, white wheels and race number 3 instead, if that's ok?

Last time I took a look I saw quite a big list of competitors now it's blank. Is it just me or is something wrong with the googly docsy thingy, @Gravitron Lucas?

Can I still join the EU race tonight?
Yes, and we appreciate you letting us know at least 90min before race start. 👍

Any other reserves need to confirm quickly or cancel if you know you can't make it, so we can decide on 1 room or 2 within the next 20min.
