GTPlanet's New Look, GTP11, is Live

Fixed-width on any display that's moderately large is a perplexing decision - I'm no web designer but the forum only takes up half of my 1920x1080 display. Even on my laptop, which runs at 1280 wide, it feels very narrow. It almost gives the forum the appearance of being a Blogger blog. I know about and use the "wide" setting, that was the first GTP11 setting I changed.

It also feels like there's less physical space between posts, now signatures almost meld into the start of the following post which makes threads feel very cluttered.
I think both of these can be solved with color or contrast adjustments.

Nice, very nice work 👍

Reading the questions of some people...
Makes it clear a lot of people don't even read the opening post properly.

Im not a fan but I am really not going to complain. A few points have been made in this thread already.

I know from previous experience here that I will be used to it shortly and its not going to bother me until it changes with the next iteration.

Found a possible bug.

When the display user title is unchecked i get no yellow box saying premium, but if i enable it is still get no box saying premium.

Even though i don't want it i like to just point out this bug.

I know that most of the site is mainly Playstation, but I think including an XBL account under one's PSN name would be a nice addition.

No, I mean as a part of the main page. See how there's your location, then PSN, the Post Count? I think there could be an XBL account name put there if someone has one - quite a few people do...

I'm amazed by how fast everything seems to load. You click on something and Bam! It's there. 👍

Nice update, the only thing thats letting it down for me is the little image beside a topic that has multiple pages, I preferred the way it was before with the page numbers.

Apart from that it gets a :tup:s from me :)

It's been a case for roughly 70% of people here but trust me, you'll get used to it pretty quickly. Even if we have the (1, 2, 3... Last page) some will rarely use it and that includes me.

I love the new changes so far and no complaint from me.

I cannot seem to see the round Avatar, I'm on IE9

Seems like there is a problem with some latest versions of IE. Jordan has acknowledge the problem and believe to be working on it currently as this has been discussed a couple of hours ago. It seems to be working fine on my Firefox 6.

Quick thoughts... I REALLY dig this new layout! Best looking layout here since my Dec. 2003 arrival to the GTPlanet family. No hatin' from this Texas boy for this new layout!

I don't like it at all right now, I feel like things changed for the sake of being changed instead of to improve functionality...much like Facebook updates. I feel like some things are way to bunched together while other things are spread way to far apart. It looks as if the site was designed with old monitors in mind instead of newer monitors that support 1080 and up, which seems rather odd to me.

I'm sure I'll end up OK with it in time as with most website updates, but I don't feel like I'll end up loving the design. But hey it's not my call to make, it's not my website and my input shouldn't matter

*I do rather like the new pictures at the top and I am finding that the site loads quicker too.

I think the only change I would make is to bring the darker gray at the top of the gradient all the way down the sides. [...]

EDIT: I'm also curious about avatars. Typically I put a 1px black border around my avatars to separate the picture from the surrounding color. But now the avatars have rounded corners by default...so what will become of my black, square borders?
That's an interesting suggestion regarding the background color, Keef, especially in consideration of monitors which may have more narrow color spectrums. I'll experiment with a some darker shading to see how it looks.

The border radius is 5-pixels, so just make an empty square with a black outline, a 5-pixel corner radius, and then overlay that on top of the image you want to use.

I hate to complain, but I could not agree more. Kind of frustrating I have an extra click for every subscribed thread now.

What happened to the page count after threads? I understand it cleans things up a bit but now more clicky when I want to go to the 2nd to last page, etc.

I may be weird but I usually like to open the subscribed threads in "My GTPlanet" a page or two before the last one to skim first. Just my own personal preference. I'll get used to it though. :D

The ability to select a page of a thread is gone, I want to go to the last page of a thread sometimes and not the last unread post, due to viewing from work or my phone etc. Is there anyway to do this with the new layout?
Just to reiterate, guys, unless the topic had exactly three or four pages, you could never actually view the "next to last" page from the old direct page links. Direct links were only ever provided for pages 1, 2, 3, and the Last Page itself. Only the links to pages 2 and 3 have been removed.

Where has the Xbox Live field gone? It's come in very useful a few times and with Forza 4 coming up it would be nice to be able to see it again!

Also was there a contest or thread about the photomode images to be used in the banner? Or was it random?
Xbox Live gamer tags were removed from the post display a few years ago - I've got some more substantial plans for Forza coming up, so stay tuned for that. There wasn't a contest or anything for the photos, I just browsed through the forums and picked the first ones that I liked and that actually worked in that spot (a lot of great photos don't crop down to that space very well, so it turns into quite a lengthy project).

I just wanted to know is it possible to implement the Latest News & Discussions / Hot Topics section (Can't remember what it was called. It used to be on the side of the forum). If I was browsing offline on phone without being logged in, it was handy to check what threads have been recently posted in, especially something like Kazunori Yamauchi tweets! thread. I guess it should be possible to implement it in the same layout. Don't know if anyone else finds it useful or is it just me?

One thing that's been omitted is the last/recent post on the side bar (prior to logging in) It was a good way of seeing (glancing) what's currently the hot topic.

Just click on "Latest Posts" in the yellow box at the top right of the page - it's a much more robust and lengthy version of what used to be displayed in the guest's sidebar (it's actually always been there).

I'm going to come right out and say it: I'm not a fan.
Sorry you don't like it, Sharky. I'll take a look at some of your suggestions and may end up doing a few tweaks.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

No, older browsers do not support the rounded corners, so there's will always be square. You'll need to upgrade your browser if you want to see them, as there's unfortunately no [reasonable] way for me to get that working in older browsers.

Your input does, of course, matter, because I want people to be comfortable using the site. Unfortunately, though, it's never possible to satisfy everyone.
