ROll

Has anybody seen the article in the Sport Compact Car where they took some police cars and tested them against the 1/4 mile etc??
Talk about slow.
Here is the information off of the site.

0-60 mph Quarter-Mile Time/Speed Top Speed 60-0 Braking Road Course Average Times
Chevrolet Impala 9.25 sec. 17.02 sec. @ 83.20 mph 126 mph 133 ft. 1:44.25
Dodge Intrepid 9.14 sec. 16.98 sec. @ 85.05 mph 136 mph 145 ft. 1:42.07
Ford Police Interceptor 9.14 sec. 16.99 sec. @ 84.10 mph 128 mph 148 ft. 1:41.66
AM General Hummer 20.65 sec. 22.11 sec. @ 61.80 mph 85 mph 170 ft. 2:00.87
Chevrolet Camaro* 5.69 sec. 14.14 sec. @ 102.48 mph 159 mph 141 ft. 1:37.14

*Data from 2002 MSP police vehicle evaluation program

The Camaro is the only car that would put most cars to shame when it comes to a police chase.

Chases are usually about total speed over long distances not acceleration or handling, so it doesn't really matter what the cops are driving - any named car except the Hummer (which departments use that anyway?) can keep up with most of the cars they'll ever chase.

Well let's see, they modify a stock Z28, which in its own right can hold it's own with most cars out there, handling and otherwise.
They then beef up the suspension, add a chip, intake and a new exhaust and make it even faster.
Handling and accelerations of the others just pale compared to a highly modified Import or Domestic Sport Compact of today.
Get a few corners in that chase, a good driver compared to the crappy donut eating drivers of the police force and you would see what I was talking about.
Not every cop is a f1 driver or has that kind of ability to handle his car.
Mind you, the two way will outrun any car but car vs car, the Sport Compact would win and lose the cop.
Just my opinion.

We are entitled to opinions, no??

Do you think that Crown Victorias spin out or something? Police are highly trained - they will chase down and apprehend any suspect whom they have the desire to chase. The Camaro's (not entirely very good) handling abilities mean very little because most chases are for flat-out speed, not taking corners quickly.

...and bear in mind that most people being chased aren't exactly the top graduates of the Skip Barber racing school...

damn.over here in the states usually Highway patrol still have the LT-1 Caprices and in some rarity the Ford Mustangs.i've seen up here in P.A. alot of those New Crown Vics and once a Camaro{97 model i think}Cop Car.it had a lightbar and a state trooper taking a nap in it

They also have a Top Secret supra as an undercover police car

That is a good decision, because an economy-based police car has no chance of keeping up with such beasts. In Japan, they have such powerful cars that the police need to get level with equally-powerful cars. Police cars chased the TS Supra here in the A1 a few years ago, and the Supra just left them. :D

Where did you hear about that, GTR_guy? I've got a video (Video Option) of a highly modified car (can't remember what it is off the top of my head) pushing 250+kmh past an undercover police car, which turns it's flashing lights on and begins chasing it. That car was a standard silver Toyota Corolla. The guy driving the modified car obviously gives up the chase because then they go to the police station.:embarrassed:

UMM...I think it was in one of my car magazines. Either super street or sport compact car.

a diablo is only .7 seconds faster than a stock skyline according to a test done by Road and Track. So it wouldn't stand a chance against a tuned skyline.

I really doubt that the magazine that said the Japanese police use a Top Secret GT-R have got their facts straight.

Sorry GTR_guy, I think I got my facts wrong in my post, you said Supra, I said GT-R, I meant Supra :odd:

I didn't think you meant THE Top Secret Supra. I just doubted that any police force would use such a highly modified car. The maintainence and running costs would be sky high and any pursuit at high speeds would be hazardous. I would assume that the police would rather the offenders get away rather than risk an accident involving the public, caused by the police.

It would be interesting if you could dig up the article though :)

I found the article...I messed up....It's actually a top FEUL supra not top secret...it's pushing out 862 hp and runs 10.81 @222 kmh...i can scan the article if you want.

Diablo would still leave the skyline in the dust, the top speed of the skyline is 112 and the diablo, 208

BTW, i like the little yellow police vans:D :D they got yellow lights, there is one in Super 2NR TV's oct 2 show
