I wouldn't know. So far our store manager has told the Front Lanes team that they won't be doing any lay offs. But they are trying to weed out the poor performers slowly. I work around 40 hours per two weeks and get some side money from mum and I try to be a full time student.

I'm in health care.
Not only am I working, I'm working like a damn dog!
There are enough sick people to ensure that I get my 40hrs and some every week.

Still employed working 40-50 hrs p/wk.

I work in the trucking business , not as a driver anymore , but as a sales representative that does parts sales to trucking companies and repair shops.

As the saying goes : without trucks-America stops. Think about it for a minute , it's true.Everything you own,at one point in time, spent some time on a semi truck getting to stores in which you purchased them. The fuel at the gas stations got there by a semi truck. The food at the grocery stores got there by a semi truck.Everthing retail has spent time on a truck.I am fortunate to be involved in this industry, these things have to go down the road, they break or wear out parts, they need fixed.Thats where I come in.

Dubbs is right - our economy plain old sucks, there are a lot of unemployed people out there,I'm very thankful I have a job with some stability.

No change in status right now, and none predicted. However, my industry (architecture/engineering) has been very hard-hit. We are fortunate to have enough irons in the fire to stay going.
Same for me. If we get the job, I'm going to be a very busy boy going around to a bunch of hospitals and clinics doing arc flash studies. :D:tup:

Same for my wife. :)

Just got the word that our plant is going to have to let a few production people go (which will likely lead to a couple of voluntary retirements). The rest of us are safe...for now. Supposedly, our business unit is looking better for Q2, 3, and 4, so hopefully our plant will weather the rest of the storm. Anyone need some sodium borohydride? :)

I work in the deli at a schnucks grocery store, averaging 25-30hrs a week, same as always. I was just looking at our sales and they are the same now in 2009 as in 2004, some days more, some days less. People still have to eat.

And yet, diesel is still expensive.

Wish my council was better run, 500 jobs being "discussed".
There's no sign of that here yet. Recently though most folk that have left haven't been replaced. We just get the odd new person in (some of them very odd...)

Yes it is,with no reason,it'a a by-product of gasoline,but costs more ?
One of my accounts that I call on (fairly good size - 150-200 trucks) pays $1.39 a gallon , the other $1.40 is fuel tax , RIDICULOUS

I'm a student so I'm unemployed. My dad has been laid off several times even though he has 20+ years of experience of welding and now he sweats pipes for a year or two. Right now the company that he works for has no work for him to do. My mom currently works full time in a good government job to help ease the load of the layoffs.

50% tax sounds good to any Brits. We're at about 75%.

In my area. 88.9 per litre for unleaded, 99.9p a litre for diesel. So that'll be about $1.30 and $1.45 respectively. Per litre. Can get it cheaper than that, I know it's normally a couple of pence cheaper over at Asda, but that's about 13 miles east.

I voted 'unemplyed, claiming benefits' since I was for 2-3 months. Now I've got a new job though. :)

Quite a big difference between diesel and petrol there. But yes, those figures were litres. So one US gallon of diesel at the price quoted would be about £3.80 which is about $5.50 for us to buy a gallon of diesel. So roughly double price for diesel.

Petrol at quoted price would be about £3.55 for a US gallon, which would be about $5.10. Getting on for triple what you pay.

Then again that's not taking into account the difference in pay. What's average wage in the US? It's about £20k ($28k) per annum here. Minimum wage for 18 year olds is about £5.50 ($8 or so) per hour.

Do you pay other taxes on cars in America, I know it would probably vary from state to state. We pay road tax, the fuel duty (and VAT is in the fuel price too). I think there's a third, or maybe I've done it by combining fuel duty and VAT.

I don't drive btw, I cycle to college and use train to get to other places I need to. So, coming from a cyclist, it's pathetic. Oh and if this snowy period lasts for another week it is expected that many councils will run out of salt/grit. So the massive taxes do good!

at uni, the last year and getting bits together to look for placements and then jobs.
have a part time one at the mo which i might jus hold on to when i get a proper job as well, its only a few evenings a week, be more earnings anyway even if it isnt much.

graphic design, its a tricky one to go out into because now its a trendy cop-out to take but fortunately the majority of my fellow students are lazy, rarely turn up, always late, miss deadlines, and cant design so theres a good chance! it does pay to have genuine interest and enthusiasm :P

my bad on the fuel thing,I had a shining moment :dunce: prices are crazy .

As far as taxes go,this pretty much sums it up.You may laugh at this .but it is 100 % true.Got this in an e-mail from a friend :

The Tax Poem

At first I thought this was funny...then I realized the awful truth of it.
Be sure to read all the way to the end!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and h ollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most
prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middleclass in the
world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What in the hell happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'

And I still have to 'press 1' for English !?!

I hope this goes around THE USA at least 100 times!! YOU can help it
get there!!!!

GO AHEAD - - - BE AN AMERICAN!

I still have a job, although I have had to lay off about five people over the past few months. When I say had to, I mean it was not my call. Personally, my department was still profitable and if that were all my company did I would have hung on with less profit, but we needed to save money company wide, so even those in profitable areas had to go (creating more profit) if the workflow deemed them unnecessary.

All remaining employees are taking a 5% pay cut for the next four months, including management.

My wife works for the state and they are taking extra unpaid days off, basically scattering some 3-day weekends throughout the year.

I was laid off in the beginning of November, and secured a new job in the beginning of December to start in January.

I'm being paid more, although the hours are less. I beleive my net is about the same - Within $60 per paycheque. My job security is absolute, although my contract ends on Dec 31/09.

I might find a second job to supplement my 'fun budget'.
