Closed the other thread as I know not how to edit the title. I feel I may get more help if I am specific.

My last post from the other thread was thus:

Well I'm not going to install that any time soon.

Opened the box and found a big "WARNING!" inside. Reading on it tells me I must connect the GPU to the power supply (PS from here on) of my PC.
Now there is just a big bunch of wires coming out of my PS, with a variety of different shaped pin-plugs here and there.

The "WARNING!" had a picture flow-chart showing the graphics card being connected to the PS, but it only shows one connection, although there are two slots on the GPU for power. Do I connect them both? Which random pin-plugs in my PC are the right ones to connect? One of the plugs (coming out of the PS) says "PC" on it, the other says "PF" (I think - I've just put the screws back in, pretty sure it said PF). What are these?

Why couldn't the GPU instructions just tell me exactly what plugs to put where???
I hate this guessing game nonsense

EDIT: just watched a tutorial on YouTube. Guy already had 2 cables the same size coming from his PS that plugged straight into his new GPU.

Oh the despair. Why is it never easy?

Double EDIT: I don't think I have enough power cables to accommodate this 6870.
There's two cables supplied with the GPU, which perfectly fit the aforementioned "PC" plug. I'm pretty sure that would be to connect to the 6870. But I need two of said PC plugs coming from my PS.

Can I have another added, or is it new computer time?

Should I have plugs coming from my power supply that will go straight into the GPU, without the need for the two leads/cables supplied?
I've noticed these leads fit this one plug I have inside my tower (which then goes to my power supply), but I'm 99% certain I need two of these, whereas my PC only has one.
Is it normal to have very few extra power outlets within PCs?

I'm sorry for so many questions, but I'm not a tech-head at all. I figured this would be a case of plugging in the card, installing the driver(s) and off I go.
Really frustrated. Is it perfectly possible I don't have enough power connections in my PC in the first place?

If your PSU only has a single PCI-E 6 pin connector then you can use the included adapter to connect the PSU to the second 6-pin connector on the GPU.

You need a new power supply altogether... Didn't the guys in the old thread tell you this?

Perhaps because he ordered it within a day of realizing that that his current card does not have the performance that he wants and thus no one could have a say in a decent amount of time. Don't be so quick to blame others.

He could need a new power supply but we don't know if his is a 500w PSU.

This probably won't help, but I'm curious where you found a 6780? You don't mean 6770, 6790, or 6870, perhaps? If so, the 6770 only requires one PCI-E (quote from AMD website):
450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended

The 6790 requires two:
500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended

and the 6870 also requires two:
500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended

:)

EDIT: As for a PSU upgrade, might I throw this out there?: http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/ANTEC-Basiq-Series-VP550P-ATX-PSU-550W/308400/8.15

Good review from Techpowerup.
, and plenty of juice to use any of the three cars that I mentioned, not sure which one you have.

I closed it before anyone replied (once the subject of power supply became paramount).

As for getting a new power supply, this is my current PC:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003P2V9CS/?tag=gtplanetuk-20

I bought it two years ago, and have so far upgraded to 8Gb of DDR3 RAM, and the current GeForce 210. Is it definitely possible to change the power supply in this?

Yes, the case is of a standard format and that means it will work with a ATX PSU(I'm willing to bet only PSU that are 160mm and less in length due to the small space in these type of cases). You can buy a PSU like this one and you will be fine with no worries versus the over-current you would of experienced on the PSU that came with your computer if you installed the GPU without changing the PSU.

I should have mentioned the power supply earlier. Sorry about the troubles. On the bright side, if you decide to build a new computer you can swap over both components.

I've read on teh interwebz that you will need a hammer for that.

And, I'll get my coat.

I might just buy a new computer to be honest.
Am I right in assuming I can move all 8Gb of RAM across to the new tower?
Could get a basic system with Win 7, i5 or i7 processor, and a 1Tb HDD.
Then just install the RAM, the 6870 and boom.

Cost wise you are just better off getting the new PSU and you can easily change the CPU to a i5 or an i7. But changing the CPU depends if you have socket 1156 or 1155.

You need to understand; the above is not English to me. Makes no sense whatsoever even if, to you, it is child's play.

The i3, i5, and i7 CPU's have three generations. The first which is LGA 1056, and the last two are LGA 1055. Your computer is of the 1st generation. So it uses the LGA 1056 socket. The 1st gen CPU's are i3-xxx, i5-xxx, and i7-xxx. Like this one. So it does not mean that you have to buy a completely new computer. It's easy enough to upgrade your computer for a small price and get the benefits.

I went to my local shop and got a new power supply there.
500w with the extra sockets I mentioned earlier for plugging into the 6780.

So I'll be fiddling around with the PC for the next hour or two. Wish me luck :nervous:

Could I confuse things and say there's 4 generations, and he may have a 1366 (though close to impossible)

Also I think you mean 1155 and 1156, fixed it for you. :)

1366 only had server processors and i7's so it's not really fair to count it as a i series even though they were. It still baffles me why they even released such a socket in the first place, it didn't last nearly long enough and got outdone by Sandy and Ivybridge. If you bought a 1366 board with hopes that it would last longer than it did you just spent a pretty sizeable chunk of money on something that while powerful, wouldn't lead to anything special.

Sandy and Ivy Bridge are definitely here to stay, as is AMD's AM3/AM3+ Platform.

Also, 1155 is after 1156. Releases are as follows: 775[Core2 Series],1366+ 1156[Core i Series], 1155+2011[Core i Series]

:)

I just got the socket number wrong in my post before. Such as 1055 instead of 1155 but my wording is correct.

Done! Was easier than I thought.

I just refreshed my Windows Performance Index there and my two ratings for graphics are now both at 7.8 (highest is 7.9)

Off now to properly test it :D

EDIT: Oh... my... GOD.

Just loaded up the "Just Cause 2" demo that was unplayable before. Now running at 60fps and looks just... staggering. Oh my God. I've been missing out.

Congrats. Now you'll need a couple "show off" games to show your console buddies what they are missing.

Yeah I don't have anything here good enough. Gotta get something modern to really give it the beans :D

The only thing I've got that I can't max out is Arma II, which is disappointing as I've got an overclocked GTX 680. BF3 will give it a good workout too, whilst being a great game in the process (as are Crysis, Metro and Arma II, though the latter is an extremely acquired taste!) which helps. GTA IV used to be a benchmark but my GTX 580 never even struggled with that, in fact my 4870 could run it on respectably high settings with no problems at all.

Hard Reset is quite a stunning game, as is Arkham City... We're quickly getting back to the recommending games thing, aren't we?

Is there any game this HD 6870 can't handle?
I've been on that "Can you run it?" site picking loads of games but my PC tops out every single time. I know it's only a guideline, but still.
Any game I put on now defaults to maximum settings in all the graphics, erm... settings.

You might think I'm sad, but I've been having loads of fun lately with Railworks Train Simulator 2012 :D

Do they have a direct line to your credit yet for new dlc? :sly:

Ha, I have that for my son.
It's actually not that bad really, not that I play it much.
Out of interest what FPS are you getting? This game seems to be all over the place for me. Some lines are good and some are bad. pCars for example is reasonably solid around 60 fps for me on max settings minus a couple of settings. Yet railworks 3 on some lines can drop to 15 fps.

I'm running an i5 2500k, 7850 and 8 gig of ram.

Cheers Shaun.

I know all about it! Not falling for that one. I'm playing the game 'out of the box' and that's it :D

I do get the occasional blip, but by and large it is very smooth. Dunno what my fps is though.
My previous card couldn't even run Railworks 1 without crashing, so anything I play now looks superb.

i3 530, HD 6870 and 8Gb RAM.

In game "Shift and Z" will display fps.
I'm pretty sure though that it's only an add on line or two that has issues so you should probably be ok. 👍

Cheers Shaun.
