How this thread go from a question on if and/or how one will celebrate to a nit-picking nag row about the monarchy?

Seriously, if alls yous is gonna do is fight I may lock the thread and you can keep at each other in the O&CE section (sorry, ross, for this thread, didn't know there was one over there, not part of my stalking grounds).

Britain is the most civilised and greatest country in the world, we used to have the whip hand over everyone,

What an absolute joke. Do you really believe that? After all, this is Britain, the country that will take anyone with an EU passport and give them money and a place to live. No money? Fine. Don't speak English? Fine. Have a criminal record? Fine. No intention to work whatsoever? Fine.

Heaven forbid they should actually let in the wife on one of their citizens. That would just be too far now wouldn't it?

Erm... yes, if I didn't believe that, I'd be on the next plane to somewhere better.

Yeah. Like that's all that's required for immigration. I personally despise it when people try and claim that their country is the best in the world. What are you basing that on other than a foolish sense of national pride? How many countries have you actually lived in?

That and we are home to a species called the 'chav'. Who are all like 'we gettin payed to do nuffink. its siiick brah!'

In my village there's a street party and there is loads of bunting up. It's all looking very good, all we need now is the weather to play nice...

We have it pretty cushy really, there are far far worse places to live.. but that doesn't necessarily mean that we have a nation that we can be that proud of... it's nice to see that we attempt a little national pride with events like the jubilee... but it sickens me when the lazy workforce that claims £500-£1000 a month because they accidentally on purpose had 3 children, will sit there mouthing off about the royal family, but will defend their contractual right to a day off to celebrate it...

Yes that annoys me as well, for the record I'd like to add that I'm definitely not one of those people, although I know plenty who are.

That's exactly what it is... everyone needs something to believe in and I believe every word I've posted.

I've visited many countries but Britain is the only one I've called my home.

It's fine if you don't have the opinion that I have, but I find it amazing that people actually abuse the country that they live in, that can't be good for anyone...

So you think that it's okay to say you live in the most civilized and greatest nation in the world? If that is your opinion, then fine. But I'm not seeing anything in the way of supporting evidence here.

I have visited many countries, and have lived long term in Canada and now Japan. Technically, neither Canada nor Japan can be considered my home. Japan can't be as I plan to leave in a few years. And Canada can't be considered my home because I neither live there or currently have the right to live there. I aim to change that though.

Technically, Britain is my home, but due to the difficult situation I've been put in by the UK government, I can't return there without separating from my wife. This puts me in a difficult position right now. I am currently without a "home country" on a personal level. I am working towards obtaining Canadian citizenship. When I do, I will renounce my British citizenship. Enough is enough.

Came in to figure out what the heck this thread was about. Looks like I got my answer. Not sticking around long enough to figure out which day this is happening. :)

It's to celebrate 60 years of the Queen being on the throne. It's nothing to do with birthdays.

No problem. Seems to be more popular than my thread anyway. Anyway, I'm going to sit on my arse and play GT5.

I don't hate the Queen. I think royalty doesn't belong to the present, and no one should gain power fame only because they were born to a specific family.

Apart from the fact the queen has no real power and is more or less only for heritage. I have no problem with this, people complain about the money that is spent on them, however then think of the tourism they bring and the money that then bring aswell.

If the ruling party was inherited in then I wouldn't be happy, however as a symbol of the countries history them I have no problem.

I'm not one for huge patriotism, good for the queen for her such a long rule however I'm not going to be really celebrating it.

Catch a boat to Australia from Indonesia, we'll put you in a detention centre for a little while then you can call Australia home lol.

The Queen does a great deal for the country and the commonwealth. Tourism, a respected figure head etc... She deserves a day where the country can celebrate on her behalf for 60 years on the throne. We are having a street party on the sunday which should be a laugh, coronation chicken rolls me up. If you don't like it, well, you have gained a extra bank holiday.

As for other members of the royal family, the spongers, the let's jet around and milk my mum attitude, that is the problem, not the Queen herself.

And how about Will and Kate as well. Now I'm not a fan of the whole 'royal' thing, but you can't deny that their wedding brought a lot of pleasure to millions of people around the world for various reasons (including an extra day off).

I'd rather tune in to their wedding than, say, the 🤬 Kardashians or Katie Price, and that's the option if you want to talk about fame for doing nothing. God help us all.

In all fairness the queen 'works' pretty hard and she has been doing it relentlessly without having a choice for 60 years. I don't ever see a future monarch ever again having that kind of stamina and dedication. The world seems to enjoy her and she is part of the UK heritage which draws tourism etc so its fine by me.

I'm particularly looking forward to the river thames flotilla which Boris Johnson described like this....

Only Boris!

 Honestly, I can't help but like the bumbling old mental... however, I do have the advantage of not living in London and within his bonkers blast radius. ;)

I can't agree with either of those statements. Firstly, what constitutes 'civilised' and especially 'greatest'? And second, football 'hooliganism' or gang culture is a worldwide phenomenon and in many cases far, far worse than in the UK.

Come say that again once football hooliganism dies out, and it'll probably have some sense in it.

Oh please. Get off your high horse.

I am celebrating by moving out of my parents house and up to Reading.

dhandes

Couldn't agree more. I don't dislike the queen or anything, just those insignificant quislings in the "background".

From one democratic monarchy to another :
Congrats! Have a nice day off .

As for monarchy, they have nearly no power, but have great influences that can aid a country in developing relations with other countries (on political, economics,...)

She's a real queen, and has been one for a long time. I'm glad you have a day to officially give her a thought. Hope you enjoyed your holiday, Shem; did you spend any cash with her face on it?

Football hooliganism ranks very lowly on our list of social problems at the moment. Still, no way is Britain the most civilised country, maybe parts of it are but there are some very uncivilised parts.

The Royal Family supposedly contribute far more to the country than what the country gives them so they're fine by me.

Also I'l just leave this here ...

Hopefully not too inappropriate. ;)

I like having the Royal Family some I can live without like all the cousins ect. but they increase tourism and they are part of our deep history. I will more than likley be working, if not I will be just relaxing at home.

This. He's bloody brilliant at times, even though he is a bit mad. I loved reading about him calling Ken Livingstone "A ****ing liar" straight to his face when they were in a lift together. Only Boris.
