On the topic of permits, I get mine next Wednesday. :dopey:

And Ranman, I'd recommend a Nissan 240SX, the tried and true first sporty car for quite a few. They're one of the cheapest ways to get into rear wheel drive and sporty cars altogether, but you're also getting a Nissan, so it's going to last forever. Personally I'd stay away from an early 00s Tiburon; it comes from a transitional period when Hyundai went from making cheap, bad cars to making affordable, but still not exceptional cars. There's also the fact that they're fugly. Another one I quite like is the Acura Integra, which if you can find one that hasn't been molested beyond repair, is one of the best front wheel drive cars of its time. If you do get one, get a good alarm system, or at least keep it in a garage, they tend to get stolen constantly.
On the complete other end of the spectrum, assuming your budget is $5k, you can get a pretty decent early 90s Lexus LS400, and those will run forever. Seriously, look at the Lexus forums, there's an SC400 with 665k miles if I recall correctly. Back when these cars were introduced they set a new standard for refinement and quietness, just seamless cars in general. Noise, vibration and hardness in these cars are very low. Basing my knowledge off the LS430, they're really not all that bad to drive. They're comfortable, quiet, and have pretty good power but because they're big old sedans, insurance is not ridiculous. They're heavier cars, but are just as fast as any other sporty car within your budget, save for V8 Mustangs and Camaros. Finding a decent one for $5k or less is entirely possible, you just have to find one that wasn't owned by an aspiring gangsta. Thankfully, senior-owned examples in good condition still aren't rare. Seriously give these cars a look. 👍

@Doog

I agree about the V8 Mustang/Camaro. I know many people willing to sell Fox Body Mustangs with WELL BUILT 302 (5.0L)'s in them. I'm talking like 400+ horsepower and 450+ torque. In a light car. You can get that for about $4,500, sometimes cheaper.

My dad had the cobra model of the foxbody gen but it got stolen in the 90s. I feel sad for him. It could had been my car about now.

On the topic of first cars, I was thinking today how I want an old VW Beatles or one of those VW vans (can't think of the proper name). They are interesting cars to me, and I've been obsessed with anything German recently.

Speaking of which, I missed the lesson about future tense in German yesterday, but it was simple so I'm all caught up. German is an awesome class.

I've wanted a Beetle or Splitscreen Camper van since I was about 7 or 8. I'm 14 now, and planning to get one when I'm 16, so I can rebuilt etc, and so it's ready for when I'm 17 and old enough to drive. They make great first cars, because they are cheap to repair, and to insure. I get laughed at in school because i want a Beetle or Bus, but when they see it, I think they'll stop.

Takes about 10 to pull it apart AND put it back together again. Stupid easy.

Took a bit longer than that. Had to use a prybar to get the cover off. Then to clean it and drain it took about 15 minutes. We didn't finish because we were trying to get a broken bolt out. And of course the bolt is on the very top so you can't just drill it and use an extractor.

Yeah the last one I did the cover popped right off. Draining it doesn't take long, and then I get the last bit out and fill it. I broke a bolt off one and just drilled it out and tapped it. The one that broke was on a 10-bolt rear and was off to the top left. That took a little bit longer but if everything comes off like it's supposed it really doesn't take long to pull everything apart and put it back together. Just don't spin the pinion or the gears will fall out, and usually the shims go with it.

It's always fun when someone breaks a bolt and you have to get it out. Not. And I sure as hell don't wanna do that. What sucks is that we were pretty much finished (three in a group) but me and one person in the group won't get checked off since we won't be there to finish it tomorrow. One of my friends in the group is gonna finish tomorrow though. Even though all we had to do was put new sealer on it and then put it back on. Oh well, we'll still probably finish before most other people. :P

Yeah but at least you didn't have to deal with this:

Trying to get that out was a nightmare. The other side is even worse.

There were chunks of metal the size of golf balls in the differential case.

So today in band, a not-so-smart kid in my class put his fingers in between the valves of his trumpet and got it stuck, then it swelled up and he couldn't get it off. Then at baseball practice (about 45 degrees), I was wearing short sleeves and baseball pants and then it suddenly started to sleet and snow, but my coach decided we should practice through it. I got some in my eyes, it went in my nose, and it wasn't comfortable.

Had a marching band practice like that once. It wasn't quite snowing, but it was very cold and it landed between the rim and the head of the drum (if you look at a snare, especially a marching snare, you can see what I'm talking about, there is a little crevasse). It was fun watching the water roll around and we would wait for a lot to cover the head, then hit a rimshot and watch myst go everywhere.

Which reminds me, marching band is starting back up. Gonna finally not get bossed around by seniors at band camp, because there are only 2. So juniors (me) are like seniors.

Spring break has started. I finally have a week off from that horrid place. I also got my report card, and it is way better than I expected it to be.

Yup mine started today too.

On top of that, going to start sanding down my old guitar and prep it for paint.

How in the hell did you get it out?

Took me a couple hours just to get a C-clip out. Eventually once I got the old broken parts out of the way things came apart nicely which I was really happy for. The worst part was getting the pin out. The small bolt came off rather nicely but the gears didn't want to turn so the pin wouldn't slide out, and the excess heat had warped the pin just enough that it wouldn't budge. The funny thing is the vehicle came in under it's own power and had been driving like that for a while.

Apparently my trade school offers a level 3 auto technologies class but I won't be able to take it because I graduate next year. I'm in level 1 now, took a different level 1 class last year upon my parents telling me to. :grumpy:
