Geez, we have nothing like that in Australia. There's usually just one level of everything (except Maths and English). How we have to get to University is to choose a certain amount of courses that add up to 10 units (most courses are 2 units) to qualify for what's called an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admittance Rank) which goes up to 99.95 in increments of 0.05 (don't ask me why the top is not 100)
After the final exams are done, some organisation ranks you against everyone in Australia (except the state of Queensland, they don't use the ATAR) on a range of factors (they've never really been able to explain it properly to a regular person like myself) and then somehow gives you a number to Universities almost solely use to award positions in their courses.
I do know some things give you bonus points (I know the University I'm going to will award 3 bonus points because I go to a school in the region) but it's a completely different system to what I've just read.
