EDIT:
Please don't just leave a list of cars and bounce. you can name more then 1 car if you want, but I'd like to read about what makes some your choices important to car/racing History. Please expound on your choices!! I don't know everything about cars and this thread could be a great opportunity to learn a little more about specific cars.

---------------------------------------------------

This thread is to discuss race/cars that have had an impact and left their mark on history through driving and racing. Be it technological innovation, records set, or impressive victories on the track.

Furthermore, I argue that these cars should receive a Premium treatment in GT6 and beyond, due to said importance and their place in history.

I will start things off w/ the greatest road car of all time,

McLaren F1 (GTR)

http://cars.mclaren.com/f1/the-story.html
With our racing heritage, it was not long before a race-prepared F1 was on the track. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, the F1 GTR achieved a feat no other debutant manufacturer has ever managed. Winning the race and dominating the podium, McLaren occupied four of the top five places. In just 24 magical hours, the greatest supercar of its generation had become the most successful British race car of modern times.

http://media.mclarenautomotive.com/page/9/
It was a remarkable achievement in that a real road car with only minimal modifications had taken on and beaten the best in the world’s most gruelling race, at its first attempt and in the first year of production... it also secured for McLaren a first in that it is the only manufacturer to win the triple crown – The Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. It remains a unique achievement.

Other innovations include:
http://cars.mclaren.com/f1/the-design.html
To enhance performance, handling, braking and sheer driving feel, the F1 team knew they would have to minimise weight – everywhere. Lighter and stronger than aluminium, the F1 was the first road car with a carbon fibre chassis. Its weight-saving wheels were made from magnesium alloy. The supporting sub-structure was made from titanium. Even the toolkit, made from titanium, was 50% lighter than a steel kit.

To this day, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest Naturally Aspirated car.

http://jalopnik.com/5945481/the-legendary-history-of-the-mclaren-f1/
Zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, zero to 100 in 6.3 seconds, zero to 100 and back to zero in 11.5 seconds, and a top speed of about 240 mph — all from a car that came out in 1992. The F1 held the record for world's fastest production car for more than a decade, and even today, it remains the fastest naturally aspirated road car

There isn't much more I can add, but i encourage anyone interested to visit some of the links and read more about this amazing car.

I think, the McLaren GTR deserves a Premium model. As do the LM and the LongTail.

I can tell you now it will be very easy to premium model the 2J and 2D... and 2E... and 2K... and 2F. Visited the museum where the originals are held and it was phenominal.
Anyways, the Chevelle, Shelby GT350R, Superbird, come to mind immediately in terms of American cars. I forget if the Challenger or Charger was standard.

As well as Racing Cars that should've/could've won; Toyota GT-One!
yes

I agree, if nothing else at least the 2J and 2D. I admit I'm not too familiar with the other models.

also, jealous. Would love to see them in person.

If you ever go to Midland, Texas 👍 they had a bunch of other cool stuff but that's the "main attraction". I have a thread on the 'cars in general' section with a bunch of photos

Shelby Mustangs - Probably the most famous Mustangs.

Dodge Charger - TV & Movie Icon.

Jaguar XJ220 - Iconic Supercar.

Ferrari F40 LM - Iconic Racer.

BMW M1 - Had it's own race series which many F1 drivers competed in.

Ferrari F355 - Legendary Ferrari from the '90s.

Jaguar D-Type - Do I need to explain?

Jaguar E-Type - See above.

Ford Sierra Cosworth - The First Ford/Cosworth combination for the road.

Ford Capri RS2600 - Won a lot of touring car races with Jackie Stewart.

Mitsubishi Evo Rally Cars - Tommi Makinen.

Ferrari 250 GTO - Really?

Lancia 037 - The only 2WD rally car to beat the Quattro.

Peugeot 205 T16 - Won one of Juha Kankunen's world titles.

Toyota Supra - Was in pretty much every touring car series and loved the world over.

Lamborghini Diablo - It just deserves it.

EDIT: Added reasons.

Golf 1

Lotus Carlton

190e Evo

Karmann Ghia

Audi Quattro

Beetle RSI

etc,etc....too many to list.

All racing / rally cars.

Surely this is just another wishlist, no?

VW Golf GTI '76 -The first year of the GTI Line & just keeps getting better with each generation. I think the most iconic hot hatch deserves more detail.
Toyota 2000GT '67 -While not only a movie star, this car was revolutionary for its time. While most Japanese sports cars of the '60s were barely pushing over 100hp, here comes Toyota with a lightweight, nimble sports car with roughlt the same amount of hp
from an early '50s Corvette. A truly historic & very important car in it's time Jaguar XJ220 '92 -What else is there to say? At one point it was the worlds fastest production car. And even more astonishing was the engine that powered the production version to a blistering 213mph. Not a V12 like it was originally planned, but a small twin turbo V6. It just goes to show you what 6 cylinders can do.
Cadillac Cien '02 -Cadillacs first attempt at a supercar & I think they nailed it! What's more supercar-y than a 7.5L mid engined V12? What makes it more special is the fact that it was built to celebrate Cadillac's 100th anniversary.
Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86) '83 -Time: Midnight. Place: A lone mountain road in Japan. Car: Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86). What more could you want?
Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Duetto '66 -This was the last car styled by Pinin Farina that Battista "Pinin" Farina was personally associated. & you can clearly tell by it's elegant yet sporty lines.
BMW 2002 Turbo '73 -As Europe's first turbocharged production car I think it deserves a special place in the GT6 premium line up.
BMW M3 CSL '03
Buick GNX '87
Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (C1) '54
Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport (C4) '96
Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70

Ford Model T '08 - the first mass-produced car.

Ford Mustang '64 - the first pony car.

Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor '08 - when people hear the words "police car", they think of this.

Chevy Corvette '54 (P) - the first of an American legend.

Toyota 2000GT '67 (P)

Toyota Supra '97 (P)

Aston Martin DB5 '64 - the most iconic 007 car.

Ferrari 250 GTO '62

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa '58

Ferrari 125S '47 - Ferrari's first car.

Ferrari F2002 '02 - one of the most successful F1 cars in history.

Ferrari Testarossa '84

Ferrari F50 '95

Ferrari 365 GTB/4 '71

BMW M1 '78

BMW M3 '89

Audi quattro '84 (P)

Didn't the F1 GTR beat LMP cars as well?

In the '95 Le Mans, I'm in favor of adding that car in the game. I think the only reason we have the '97 one is because it was a BMW. Heck it shouldn't be that hard to model. Just edit the already existing F1 and they're set.

The only car that I want to be premium is the Superbird.

They need to bring back the Auto Union, Model T, Trialathon Toyota, both Motor Wagons from 1886, and the Nike One. I didn't see the logic in removing them given the X1's presence.

Honda Civic EG6- it pretty much opened up the tuner world to a new generation
Honda Integra DC2- you can't have the other type R's as Premium and leave this one out
Viper GTS LM- it dominated Le Mans as a Chrysler
Corvette C5R- rewrote the book by beating Ferrari and Aston Martin GT1 class dominance

Formula GT
Chrysler Prowler (might as well add it to the new car dealer if it has moving dials)
All LMPs and Group C cars
Ford GT40
Chapparal 2D and 2J
Chevrolet C2 Race Car
Peugeot 205 Evo 1 & 2 Rally Car
Subaru Impreza Rally Car ('01 and '03, championship winning)
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI & VII Rally Car

Oh, one more car to my list. The 1992 Honda NSX Type-R. Without this car, the McLaren F1 wouldn't have been conceived.

I'm actually very surprised that PD hasn't put in a normal Lamborghini Diablo (not the Nomad) in a GT game yet.

Edit: After reading this quote
Pick a car or two and explain why/how it is important in car/racing history.

I should explain why this car should be in this game. This car is a very famous and it looks really good and if we have other Lambos in the game why can't this one be in as well.

The RUF CTR Yellowbird was the fastest sports car in the world when it was released. It also apparently held the record lap time around the Nuburgring for a little while.

I edited out a few of the cars in your post, not because they are bad choices, (they were all great), but these are the ones where our tastes overlap.

Also, thanks for giving descriptions on some of the cars.

A flat list isn't as compelling. I don't want this to be just a wishlist thread.

Pick a car or two and explain why/how it is important in car/racing history. Even a brief description is nice and much better then nothing.

really? I didn't know this. Can you explain/go into more detail?

I'm sorry to sound like a broken record, but can you give more detail on this? I really found most of my info from the McLaren site. Would love more detail on the race events instead of the overview that the site gives.

All pre-1985 Japanese cars, they helped shape today's Japanese and international automotive markets and design!

And the "road" version too. shoulda been in GT4/5 aswell.

Well they're brining the road version of the GT40 back from the dead, so who knows what's next.

And to answer Prototyp3's question, I found a link with some good backstory to this particular F1.

http://www.evo.co.uk/features/features/252979/mclaren_f1_at_the_le_mans_24_hours.html

Basically, McLaren's first shot with the F1 in 1995 in the GT1 category was a home and ended up beating prototypes. Most of the success was due to rain in the later part of the race however.
