Holden's pictures update June 2014

Got my 70-200 2.8L IS last week although haven't had much chance to use it due to working so much.

Only chance i got to use it so far was the speed sunday xmas cracker at knockhill a couple of weeks back.

Also the lens is great when it gets dark :sly:

Totally loving this 70-200 2.8 now, been doing photography for a venue in Glasgow for the last couple of weeks now.

My tripod really doesn't like this lense though  looks as if its bending in this pic.

I don't think my 70-200 has ever been on a tripod! I've taken the tripod ring off it as well.

Like the first shot in your set above.

Few more from last nights open mic,mix of 50 1.4 and 70-200 2.8

BTW giles, first trackday of the year is on at knockhill on sunday if your interested in heading up?

I really like the last batch of motorsport in particular. I see you've eliminated the warm tone that was in alot of your previous shots. I think it's a dramatic improvement.

The night time shots of the event in Glasgow are interesting as well, some great colours and stories being told by the shots. 👍

Got asked to pictures for a friend of mine the other night whos started her own promotional events thing for different bands at different venues, launch night was wednesday and managed to sell out the venue.

very very nice stuff, most of it is very well lit, I know it's just available light but you have managed to make do with what you have. I really like the first and second pictures of this last set, the yellow EVO coming to a halt and the flame-spewing Focus, and the girl 'tween the trees in your other sets. The guy standing with the guitar in his feet is also very very nice.

I really like the guitarist shot, love the colors. 👍

Nice set. Great portrait cropping. Did you shoot any wider shots of the performance?
The widest shots in the sets are already at 70mm, which is the widest for the lens. Perhaps the 50mm f/1.4 would have been a good choice in this situation?

Put prefer to be further back,it's something i need to get over so to speak but don't like getting in the way of the paying crowd that obvious paid money to see the bands and not somebody jumping around with a camera.

i did have my 50 1.4 with me but it seems to have a habit of hunting whereas you take the picture and look on the body and it looks in focus but when you look at it on a computer you can see the focus has shifted plus it doesn't seem to "control" the colours as well as the L.

I've noticed this as well with my own 50mm f/1.4. I think it's a limitation of the 450D's focusing/metering system. The center point still focuses decently at f/1.4, but the outside ones certainly not (unless there's lot's of contrast/light in the particular area you're focusing on). You can very clearly see that it has trouble finding focus when DOF is really shallow. It's certainly not a trouble anymore once you stop it down a bit (but then again, why did we get ourselves an f/1.4, certainly not to stop it down :P). Manual focus will still work of course, but will be difficult with the shallow DOF.

Another limitation of the 450D when shooting at f/1.4 is the minimum shutter time (1/4000) of the 450D. You won't be able to shoot at f/1.4 when the sun is shining, it will be overexposed no matter what.
