Original thread is here. Predictably, many of the die-hards don't like it one bit. Amusingly, some try and claim it's not really a rat-rod because it doesn't conform to rat-rodding's "rules". I'll let you all work out the irony of that one yourselves...

Oi, vey. I don't care if it's a True Rat or Not. I love unusual and creative stuff like this. and I get tired of hearing Small Block Chevies over and over in YT vids...I recently mentioned this to a team running a Turbo'd 2.3 Pinto mill in a sand dragster. haven't heard back.

Someone's posted this particular car before on GTP, but let's see if you can guess what this rod was based on...

Seeing as it only runs 4 and has Georgia plates, I'm gonna say that's psychochild's Miata 👍

Given the recent activity in this thread I thought I'd put some more stuff in here... as usual, high-res stuff will appear.

George Poteet's lakes 34 coupe:

Can't find a better place to post these than here. Apologies in advance for the small pictures:

There was a full feature in the Aug 2008 issue of Retro Cars here in the UK.

Beyond what you can see, which is a very green, very low Type 2 bay window, it has a 2.8 straight six BMW engine mid-mounted inside it and a limited slip diff. The chassis is custom box-section tube, with modified arches (obviously) and coilovers.

The colour is an Audi TT shade.

It's definitely an acquired taste but you can't deny it's an impressive bit of work. I'm a fan of campers all shapes and sizes and much as I appreciate the traditional VW scene stuff, this thing is awesome.

that thing is killer, I like even more that the guy went with a T2 instead of the more often used T1 Bus/Transporter, nobody does stupid things with these, awesome HfS!

Keeping with the VW stuff, which btw, is as welcome here as in the imports section as long as it is aircooled I suppose, lets see some more offbeat stuff done to VWs, its amazing how after all these years people still find stuff to do to these things.

A Bug with serious traditional custom vibes, check out those fenders!!!! I had a mag with a feature on this thing, it had a 2+ liter engione if I remember correctly. Sweet car.

This Karman Ghia is more unconventional, but it still has a lot of work, some of it's lines, specially around the side window, remind me of the Chrysler Atlantic concept.

in this case, what's unconventional at least for most of the world, is the car itself. What is it? a VW Brasilia, which was only offered in Brasil and Mexico as far as I know, altough there might be other Latinamerican countrys that got them. I bet there is some heavy work in the undercarriage to get it that low. My dad had one when I was a small little brat, but I still remember how noisy it was.

Type IIIs never came as pick us but this custom rendition makes you wonder why... it looks awesome!

what the heck...
gv_creations_1141423240_56plumbers.jpg

This woody by Mooneyes is just stupid-freaking awesome. Part of what makes it look so correct are the vintage tires, and the fact that it's a two-door!!!
v-woody_f.jpg

finally, a couple of Karmanns, first one that is still in progress, which will be powered by a massaged Viper V10 sitting at the front of the car:

And on more or less the same vein, one that appears in this months Hot Rod Mag article about LSx engines, with a Magnacharged 6 liter LS engine mounted midships, running a Mendeola Transaxle... and frenched Mercedes headlamps:

hrdp_1102_29_o+holley_ls_fest+ricky_byrd_1964_vw_karmann_ghia.jpg

wow, wtf with that thing? It's really intresting actually, a front mounted Porsche engine... non turbo! wtF?

Aaaah I just noticed the link, Promodet... well, that explains certainly a lot, freaking crazy japanese...

who cares about the sticker!!! that thing is bad-ass!!!

My friend wants to make a replica in Forza, but we can't figure out what it says.

That was the fan favourite back in the days. It also held the DTM speed record in Hockenheim.
The problem was the chassis, brakes and rigidity. It had to run the stock rear axle...
This car was basically what cemented the idea of american cars that can't do corners at all into german's minds. Still, people loved it.

wait.

that thing ran in the DTM?

Heck, awesome... I'll have to find out more about it... linkety-link or something?

I recently sold my '60 Biscayne, and later got a new computer. Most of my library of congress sized archive of '60 Chevy photos was lost. I'll get another someday.

What are the odds of that badass Chevy in the video running a hopped up W block? :)

small, I'd tend to think. I dont think a non-blown W could produce such monstruous torque... but who knows. My bet would be a standard big block.

I would beg to differ. I bet he may have a W head in that. Heres a sweet one doing almost as good a job. i have personally seen this car do a wheelie as good as the 60 does, at a goodguys show in indy.

The pic didn't load. It was the 63 impala Mr 409 . twists up like that, Runs a 409 2x4 carbs...

Two awesome vehicles I got to see when I went to Hinson's shop this past Friday to deliver my hardtop. These were waiting outside of their dyno shop.

And on the dyno was one of the most ridiculous swaps I've ever seen. I didn't get any pictures, but it's an LS-swapped Geo Tracker which has now been supercharged. Rear end is out of an S10. Solidly built, and must be an absolute handful to drive. Found pictures of it online before the supercharger went on:

👍 👍 Good thread.

what? I'ts awesome. Dual quads, Vette finned valve covers and T-handle with stock upholstered interior for the win. I really like your car. Cragars?

I have a vintage set of cragers and aluminum slots. But I thinking on running steel wheels on the back With a set of 1960s mickey thompson raders front runners That i have on the front of the car..

Im gonna rudius the rear wheel wells and run ball joint spacers on the front and raise it up about 2 inches . Give it an old gasser look

well dude, if you give it a Gasser look but don't give it proper gasser power it won't be as cool, a gasser needs a lot of other touches to look good.

at least a tunnel ram with your two carbs poking trough the hood, white fenderwell headers, a moon pedal (and gas tank protruding trough the grille if possible), no front bumper, no rear seat, roll bar, even coloured plexiglass windows... and yeah, mile-long traction bars, pie-crust slicks, all the stuff.

If you don't plan to add all such stuff you'd be better off having it as a cool street cruiser, as it is right now your car fares very well, but it might look "incomplete" if not given the complete gasser treatment.

I have an original 1950 chevy coupe gasser from the 60s. Had a blown olds in it at one time. Straight axle mile high stance and bare bones look.
Im looking for more of a early gasser look . Not the mid to late era. Before straight axles and colored plexi and carbs poking through the hood.. if you look at the book the gasser wars you can see what im talking about .

I know what you mean. That's why you want a mid lift on the nose, only two inches. Still, at least put on the fenderwell headers and loose the bumper.

Heres the 50 coupe . I saved it from the crusher.

I found this in a salvage yard getting ready to drive across it with a dozer. I ask what it would take to buy it to save it. He said 300 bucks. So now its mine.. I done some research . It had a blown olds in it a hydro stick and a pontiac rear end. I replaced the rockers and most of the floor and trunk pans. I have the windows out as im trying to get the body back in shape.. I have a pair of austin buckets that look like bomber seats that im going to run in it . it will be panel and lace painted in pearl white and candy green , Green plexi windows and a 396 tunnel ram and 4 speed . 4. 56 rear gears . Heres the seats
fiatparts004.jpg
. Will be cool when done

This is my 3rd project , its a 1960 fiat bianchina . I am thinking a 1300 suzuki hyabusa motor . Will be like a huge go kart. The wheel base is only 70 inches and is about 44 inches across

or a clone of this , you never know with me

Oh Sh**! Man that thing really looks the part. 300 bucks. I mean, it might be rough but for that entry price you can justify any expense you want to throw at it. And I love the idea that it’s getting painted like it would have been in the early 70s, I love the psychedelic vibe in gassers, makes them even wilder. The Indy Profiles scream 70s also.

I also like the sound of a tunnel-rammed 396. Out of the ordinary for sure, these days it seems that no one pays attention any more to the small-displacement big blocks, even if they were a bit of a legend in their time.

And I love the Bianchina. So rare everywhere, I’ve seen about two. A clone of the second pic would be incredibly crazy, but so would be the ‘Busa conversion. Either way you go, it’s gonna be stupid wild. Let us know… and open the Fiat it’s own thread! It’s gonna be a hit, believe me.
