Well my question was aimed at Andy more than anything since he isn't using an airbrush and I can't really see any positive effects of using nail polish without an airbrush, but thanks for the replies, I had no idea you could get such awesome effects with nail polish.

I was looking up how to make polish runnier and so many people said to use remover to get hardened polish runnier. I figured this would just mean that I would turn polish into water if I added remover in its current state. I was wrong. Luckily my sister has thinner so I'm going to try that out.

But basically, I thought I had all the tools I needed. I already know about applying a base coat to make my life easier.

I can also say I'm getting more manicuring experience than all of you :P

One month later...

Grass has grown. More progress has been made in the Armored Van only because it can retain more water and there are holes on the bottom for the roots to reach through. I've made them sit on a pile of soil to expand the amount of space the roots can grow.

As rain pours, it gets washed away so I'm going to need to make a vessel to put these guys in. It'll also promote bug life to help keep the soil going.

I had another idea of turning my unwanted donors into junkyard bodies. Would scratch off a lot of paint, flick on brown, beige and tan paint to make it look like rust., drill tons of holes in the chassis bases, break open doors, roofs and bonnets, and stack them all on top of a big wide planter, and grow whatever I can on it. Moss sounds like an awesome idea here.

Oi, here is another revived corpse from Andy's stash:

It looked like this before good ol' AOS blew it away for it's tires:

This was fairly done as was, the only thing that required any real work was masking off the top of the wooden part to paint it flat black, like if it had a ccanvas cover, like the woodies usually had. Front wheels are a set of Johnny Lightning Cragar that had an incredibly wide axle, so I made spacers for them.

Rear wheels were a set of Matchbox Premiere slicks that came in the first lot of Real Rider tires I even bought.

Rear stuff was also detailed:

I ffogot to take pics of the interior, wich was masked off and painted flat black, as it was part of the engine piece and was chromed.

Superb Moggy Minor traveller custom, Cano, 👍 love all the details (roof, choice of wheels, hinges etc). My aunt used to own one, though it was never as cool looking as that.

I wish the front & rear wheels matched, but it does look fantastic. 👍

I like the grass thing Andy's experimenting with. He should use some old beater-style vehicle next time. It should add some deserted look to it.

I scratched up the surface so that rust will build up over time hopefully. I'ts not going to happen with the RV since it's plastic, but hopefully the sun over the summer will wreck it from Uv damage :D. And once I ever get around to flicking on some brown paint, it'll look like mean off-roading machines.

I grabbed these two today to add to potential series:

Thanks for the comment everyone. AOS, I also restored back to stock the Boulevard Mustang you sent me, as I did not have it:

I didn't have to take appart anything, I had two sets of those axles in the giant tire lot I bought (:

WHERE DO YOU KEEP FINDING THESE LOTS?

Seriously. I want to know.

Bondo isn't for the cars, but it could be in the future.

Me too!

Some of you may remember me starting work on a RAUH Welt Porsche 993..

little reminder and slight update
(last pic i posted of it):

I've now finally got around to starting the wheel arches. They're not finished yet, but they're well on their way, just need to do the rear bumper, side-skirts and finish the front air-dam/spoiler and splitter, then i can start work on the rear deck and wing.

(please excuse crappy pics.. poor light and using a toaster, rather than a camera).

And 1 final pic showing the comparison between the increased wheel arches:

And those were only to show me what the guy had. I bought way WAY WAAAAY more than that.

At1, that Porsche is coming along nicely. Curiously, today I grabbed a Realtpy 996 with cage and everything, a bit scruffy, so I'lll be doing pretty much the same, but I dont think I'll do the fenders as wide as you.

Cheers bud. 👍 Can't wait to see your 996, iv'e only ever seen 1 Rauh Welt 996 before and the arches/fenders were pretty tame by RWB standards, so it makes sense really. I was thinking of doing the smaller arch 993 (light blue car pic i posted a good while ago), but decided against, as i felt it would look too much like a GT2 rather than a RWB.

I'm guessing your 996 is the same as this:

I love how the rear deck and wing just screw out of the body on this thing.

It looks fantastic so far, At1. 👍

I'll check back in November to see how it's coming along.

:P

A model train blog post which many hobbyists share some of their best works that feature superb weathering effects and how they went about making it happen. For the most part, it's artist oil paints, some use chalk pastel brushed on, while others dilute their browns and do layers. I really doubt they brush on the paint though. I'm thinking dabbing dry paint on with rough-texture material would work the best.

And it seems Dullcote (a flat-clear coat lacquer spray) is a popular item. I'll have to look into alternatives because eventually I'm going to make rally and weathered customs and I need them to look worn down or covered in mud.

Wished the more skilled craftsman had better taste in font. The customs are nice but the presentation really does reveal the personality of the creator.

Found out someone had knocked down one of my planters today. Was likely a small animal. They will not be forgiven for this!

Doesn't really matter though. The grass went dry and withered anyway. I'm going to unearth each bed, drill holes into their bases, tear away at the bodies with a dremel and some kind of scouring pad, paint some weathering on it, matte-clear it, make an actual planter, fill it with soil, fertilizer and other nourishing poop and redo this project.

Sorry for flooding this page, but I just had to share these.

Some of these are way over the top. The only one I really really like is the hot rod in the second pic. I also find the Nova pick up idea pretty cool. The work is impressive on all of them, though.
