Hey AHMEDFINK: Just a heads up the moderators don't like when people double post, they like use of the edit button instead. Just a friendly reminder. ;)

AHMED, that rat rod is awesome! the interior cloth is pure win! (i used to have a belt in a similar patterned material), also love the front axles, and are those roof batons carved matchsticks/real wood? 👍

Oh, and congrats on the 2nd place convention win. 👍

Minutes? Still too dull. Takes me like 30 seconds for two rivets.

Takes me 30 days. :D

Ah yes, that thing. But give us the complete rundown and tell us how you destroyed a 100% car for this to come alive.

At least you've already posted your first custom here. I still love how you kept the original paint.

Nice Rod AHMED 👍! I love that bright green paint, gives the car a unique approach as a beast of a hot rod. Congrats on the 2nd place at the convention bro. :)

Great custom there AHMEDFINK 👍

I was looking to go out today to get the supplies i needed but it will have to wait, the store i usually go to is closed for the weekend :( oh well i can look around on Ebay for some donor cars

If you're looking at painting your Ford, your local B&Q do some good paint stripper. I used to have the same problem (some hobby shops not being open on the weekend.. it's a shame 'Beaties' in Birmingham isn't there anymore), but where i live now, i'm lucky to have the main distribution/warehouse/shop to one of the leading UK hobby stores.
Picked up some Tamiya goody's from there today:

2X 100ml acrylic Tamiya spray paint: 1X Mica red and 1X gloss clear.

5X 10ml acrylic Tamiya small pots of paint: 1X Orange gloss, 1X Red gloss, 1X Flat clear, 1X Flat black and 1X Rubber black... i'll maybe use it for the bumpers/arches of the 240Z, (and for those purple wheels Cano ).

3X Tamiya model brushes: 2X thin tipped brushes and 1X flat High finish brush.

1X 10mm Tamiya masking tape (hopefully it won't strip the paint... guess i'll just have to experiment :nervous:).

And finally 1X Chrome BMF (Bare metal foil) really looking forward to experiment with it, and was so tempted to get the copper finish as well... but maybe another time. :D

Thanks 👍 will pop down sometime, as for the paint stripper i have some at home, acetone based so will have to be careful on the plastics. Other than that just the paints left to buy.

Loch Nessy, if you're afraid of paint getting peeled off by tape, you could clear the surface first enough for it to have a rigid structure on its own. If you primed it then it should be okay. Mine peeled off easily because it barely stuck to the raw metal which I didn't prime.

Told you guys Candy Green looks good on hot rods.

I'm not even sure if 'Beaties' exist anymore. Acetone should work... though acetone (alone) evaporates quite quickly, so will probably take a few attempts maybe.

Cheers for the advice AOS, though when i painted the Morris Mini (one with the crap bonnet stripes).. i'd sprayed with primer, then painted white and finally clear coated it all (Tamiya pearlescent clear), but when it came to painting the roof (gloss black), the masking tape stripped away the (primered/painted/cleared) roof channel... Either the adhesion of the masking tape was too strong, or i hadn't applied enough primer, or hadn't applied enough clear coat.

It's going to be trial and error, i guess.

Dude no, never apply paint stripper to plastics, they will melt away. Only metal!!!

Masking Tape is one of the biggest trolls for me when it comes to crafts...

Same here. I thought electrical tape was going to be the answer... lovely to work with and can be shaped to curve so easily, until i removed it from the bare diecast... even after washing it in soapy water, the diecast remained sticky.

[EDIT] Just checked out the Lamley blog, there's some Awesome custom paintwork featured. The flame paintjob on the blue Frogeye Sprite is superb!, and i'd completely forgot about 'Letraset' (used to have loads of the stuff, many different fonts).

I've never tried electrical on metal, but I have on Acrylic and it works beautifully. It works great on wood too granted the wood has tightly-packed grain.

Any while stripper dissolves some plastics, it doesn't dissolve Polyethylene. I've pour some out into a measuring cup one time to make it easier to to distribute it on several bodies and the cup is still perfectly intact.

Maybe i burnished it too much. I will experiment with it again (will be painting the 240Z in Acrylic, after iv'e got around to finishing it, sculpting/priming etc), but will spray test on something else first, and apply it to that.

Cano & Harry, you're not wrong... i just tested out the chrome bare metal foil. I love it! Amazing stuff! 👍

You guys have officially found me a new hobby.

These restorations are amazing! I suppose it's the cheapest way of restoring cars!

I've got an old Hot Wheels Mini lined up waiting to be painted, looks like this, although in poorer condition as I bought it from a show at Donnington Park when I was about 6. Luckily those have detachable bodies, so I've made it quite easy for myself. I'm going with the paint I have already instead of going out and buying some, so I was thinking of painting it matte black with a gloss white roof. Good or bad idea?

Probably bad... because it should be all black with 3 green scratches. :P

Wait, I didn't say that!!!! haha how come your Quote sez Cano?

Anyway, welcome to the thread and hobby Katie, yeah paint that sucker black with a white roof, then bolt on some black wheels for some sinister-looking Mini. You can always detail it later on.

You know, that took me so long to get . I was like, "All black with green scratches? What?! Was there a movie I didn't see or....?" then once I realised I burst out laughing... because I'm actually drinking it right now!

I've found a donor Hot Wheels with black wheels, however I'm concerned the back wheels are a little wide for the Mini. Would this matter putting them on? Would it rub? The current rear wheels on the Mini are a little loose and have some space to move side to side.

Should be fine. You'll have to sand/file off a bit of the chassis plate if the wheels are too wide, but it'll still fit.

Love what you've done AHMED. The red wheels and the interior especially. Very nice work and congrats on scoring 2nd place at the convention with it. 👍

Right, figured out what I'm going to do with the Mini. I'm going to spray it matte black, with a white gloss roof. It'll be getting a wheel swap from silver 4 spokes to black 4 spokes, saves me having to carefully paint the silver ones. The roll cage and interior will be painted white, and the windows will be sprayed gloss black to make them look tinted. I also had a thought of drilling out one of the headlights to add the look of an induction kit, and obviously painting the other light.

I'm just wondering which paint to use... I have a few Halfords aerosol cans spare, those are for cars. Matte Black, Panther Black, Graphite Grey are a few we have, I think. Or we have wall paint... in fact, quite a lot of that . I have a few model paints from abandoned builds, I could thin those and try them. Also, would white spirit be good for taking paint off?
