I have also got the chance to play NFS Shift before release date. My 14 year old cousin had got it through his mates. My first thoughts...
I spent a fair bit of time with the game and let me tell you it is amazing! After playing it, it just made me crave the PC version even more, I can't wait til its released and have a go on a g25.
My first race is a "test lap" with a bmw m3 and for my first time I did pretty well and the game suggested I have AI set to medium and driving model to experienced with all assits off except abs. That's not too bad for a first time. I put it to pro mode, manual, all assists off...I was shocked how good it felt, it felt so right. I would say it definitely feels like GTR2/GTL and DEFINITELY more unforgiving than Forza. I found myself spinning out a couple times against tough AI opponents. At Laguna seca for example, there a couple of corners where in Forza 2 I could just lift off the gas and take the corner at high speed with no understeering or oversteering, but somehow the car would grip to the road, this could happen with race cars but it SHOULD understeer with a factory car. In shift, no such thing. If you take a corner at high speed it will understeer just like it would in the real world, doesn't have a magic grip like Forza, not saying Forza isn't an amazing game, I prefer the physics on Shift. Another thing is the sounds, oh the sounds!!
Those of you worried about the physics, do not worry, once you play you will be hooked. The reason those videos look weird is because their from the chase camera, when driving in that view it LOOKS weird and doesn't look right just like FC, SCC and even GTR2 look weird from the chase view but I can assure you the driving DOES feel right, especially in cockpit view. Using a controller, it IS hard but you get the hang of it, at first I thought I could brake late like in Forza and therefore go faster around the corner, nope, even if you JUST miss the braking point, you will most likely understeer off the track...this game screams to you to play it with a wheel (G25).
I tried out different drive types, a FWD definitely feels like one, so do the rest. It's spot on.The driving is just exhilarating, I can't put my finger on what exactly makes me feel like this, but there's something about this game that just wants you to drive more and makes your heart pump. Looking forward to the PC version!
The ONLY thing that I will nitpick so far about the game is that you can't turn music off during the replays or maybe I haven't figured out how to yet but I went through all menus and found nothing.
SHIFT definitely gets a 9.5 from me. Very Impressed.
