Just got off the phone with Pete Skjold last night who will be building my very first custom 5-string. It will be a
  • burl maple top,
  • ash body,
  • 5 piece neck,
  • pao ferro finger board,
  • matching pao ferro control knobs,
  • matching burl head stock and heal plate and pickups,
  • 3 band custom eq made by East for Skjold out of the UK with sweapable freq. points,
  • adjustable string spacing 17mm-19mm,
  • includes case, strap locks, and all the tone a guy would want.

Just image, I only have to wait 6-months for it's completion.

Here's of a shot of the body and the figured burl:

Looks like your GAS isn't letting up, eh? :D

You're obligated to post pics once it arrives.

Congrats on the new purchase. That will be awesome to have your own custom bass. He has some amazing looking work on that site.
Oh BTW congrats on the 18.5!! Holy crap you are gaining mass extremely fast on those arms! :)👍

Wow, just had a quick look at the website and it looks like you'll be in for a real treat - although I'm guessing that these beauties are likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase

I'm not usually inclined to complement another man on his wood - but that's a really nice piece of burled maple you've got there. Is that the actual piece it will made out of or just an example?

But of course. I'll be updated throughout the process and will share that progress for the next 6 months.

Thanks for the congrats!!! He does some outstanding work and is a great guy to talk with. He really knows his stuff. On the 18.5 upgrade, ;) Thanks! I've been averaging 1/8" increase every two weeks. Not sure how that rates, but I'm happy with it for sure! At this rate, I should reach my goal in about 3 months, half way to the completion of my bass.

Yes, a once in a lifetime purchase for sure, and not something you buy and pawn off 5 years later. I forgot to mention that I am having him make the pickups and the control knobs out of the same Poa fingerboard material. The rest of the hardware will be black. Can't wait....

Yeah, that's the actual piece. The Poa fingerboard is a darker, almost walnut color with some nice vertical striping in the grain. As mentioned above, I will have the pickups and the control knobs out of the same Poa which will contrast nicely to the body.

Very nice! Custom guitars are always worth the time and money. With my new job, I may also suffer from a severe case of GAS in the near future :D

Well, the body is cut, jack holes are drilled.... I asked that I make the wood pickups also out of the burl to match the body. So he's going to laminate the box pickups accordingly. The control knobs will still match the darker finger board.

Only 5 months and a week left to wait.

Dang, sounds like it will be a beautiful piece. I can't wait to see progress pics! Congrats, Pako!

I will definitely post updated pics when they become available. I guess the input jack and control holes are drilled. He's got 70 basses in this current batch so when he drills jack holes, he's drilling all 70 holes as well as the control holes, routing, shaping the necks, etc...

You bass guys certainly know how to go in for exotic specs when it comes to custom builds. Pau Ferro would be my choice of fingerboard wood, as it has the dense smooth feel of ebony, whilst retaining some of the warmth of rosewood. Great on my SRV Strat.

Can't wait to see the results. 👍

I used the recommendation of the luthier on the Pau Ferro. I was actually looking at maple for a little snappier attack, but decided that it might be a little too aggressive and went with the Pau Ferro. Another nice finger board is Morado that has a lot of the same described characteristics of the Pau Ferro.

Only 5 months left...

Ahh, so I assume that the gas relief was short lived. I had a Warmoth order that took some months, and whilst waiting to have it completed, my gas came back with such force that I ended up purchasing two other guitars prior to taking delivery. Stay strong…:nervous: :D

Wow, looks lovely indeed! 👍

I'd love my own custom six string, but my wallet probably wouldn't even pay for the body ...

 Lately I've been looking at Warmoth (particularly the gecko series bass) to give me a project to keep me pre-occupied. I've also been spending a lot of time looking at Sadowsky's again. I got major GAS man, major. If only money bubbled up like spring water.

So what other guitars did you acquire while you were waiting delivery?

A Gibson SG imported from E.M. Shorts in Kansas (recently fitted out with SD Antiquity buckers). The other guitar was a Fender Eric Johnson Strat, which has since been parted up and sold (I've still got the quartersawn neck for another project).

Speaking of basses, I'll get some snaps of my little brother's 1970 fretless P-bass for you to have a look at some time.

Very nice!!! 👍 👍 👍

I really dig the deep red color!

Nice to see the swap ash showing in the routes. Did you specify a target weight?

I told him I wanted it under 8 lbs., with the body less than 5lbs before the routes he said no problem. I'll be totally stoked if it comes in just over 7lbs. My left shoulder would love me long time. :D

Heeeyyy, glad to discover some fellow low-end guys in here :)

Great looking pics Pako!! I always thought burl-finishes look absolutely stunning. Busy and full of life, but at the same time they still have a very natural feel about them! That's gonna be one beauty when it's finished!!

Haven't got cash for a custom built bass, but I'm currently waiting on a 20th anni. EBMM Stingray 5

Nice!!!👍
I can't wait to see it when the finish is complete. The grain is beautiful, and unusual.
That knot that is where the neck should attach will look awsome when finished. I envision it looking a lot like an open eye from the audience.
It also looks/sounds like you're going with active pick-ups?
Those price don't look too crazy for a custom instrument.
With that body cut, are you gooing to go with 2 strap holders at the bottom.
Gives you strap options, and you won't have to set that beautiful body on the floor with two "ready-made" stand points.

I sure hope so. The only advantage I can see with taking 6 months for it's completion is it gives me time to save up my bass fund. :)

Everything else about waiting for the bass sucks! Hopefully I will be able to forget about it and November will be here before I know it.
