I now prefer the Driving in Shift 2

In GT5 you hear tyre-screeching with every move of the wheel, making it sound like there is a lot of friction going on with the tarmac. In NFS:S2 the tyre noise is almost absent - and in my experience this is a major cause of why we get the sense of 'floatiness'.

A bit of screeching goes a long way... :sly:

the floating feeling happens on the straights, I did some tuning to my S2000 and fixed it a lot. still there but much better.

I do agree I wish there was some more tire noises

Well, they had too much tire noise in first Shift. I prefer S2U's way a lot better. In S1 my ears thought I was driving with street tires even with a Zonda or any other car.

Anyone else finding once the cars are upgraded the handling is spot on and the cars are glued to the road? Very much like the effect of those racing tyres in GT5

With the race suspension & tires, yes, a lot of cars become very grippy. Not saying that doesn't happen in real life, but some cars such as the 370Z become a lot more controllable going from the track tires to the racing ones.

Spot on! I found this too. Especially if you slightly tune the stock settings you can get excellent results.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has gotten used to the game and really started liking it for what it is and not what it compares to. To me the way they set the steering helps me try to drive as smooth as possible and always trying to be on the driving line to master each corner. I love that feature btw, telling you if you took that corner good enough.

Another cool feature I just realized yesterday was when you're using bumper cam, your speedometer doubles as your rear view mirror. The cars aren't as clear as having the actual rear view but enough that you notice there are cars behind you. I find that such a creative feature cuz I'm watching my revs more than I look in the mirror. Good job SMS! :)

I'm having so much fun with the game that I don't even notice the graphics aren't as nice as GT5. I'm too busy worrying about how I didn't take that corner good enough and now the AI will be creeping up beside me! GT5 AI doesn't stand a chance against Shift2 AI.

The more i play the game the more spot on and better everything feels ( i play on pad right now)

Imagine if you had a wheel 👍

yeah money is extremely tight or i would have the DFGT right now but mortgage and food come first ya know.

maybe i can get one by the end of summer or find a used one ?

Absolutely having a blast with the DFGT wheel on the Ps3, it brings a smile to my face, brilliant game,
my only Downer for this game is the Handling of the Lotus, it is terrible, whatever tuning i do to it, i cannot get it right.

After that horriffic Top Gear Lotus Challenge in GT5, I've learned that Lotuses are not meant to be a fun drive. Compared to that, even the Exige Invitational challenge in Shift 2 was a pleasant stroll in the park.

Thank you, at least it is just not me then. 👍

Hey now! Lay off my Exige! My 9XX Exige was my go-to car getting through the C level events. I love driving it. It's nimble and quick and very drivable when you tune out just enough of the twitchiness.

Crank up the caster and toe in both front and rear wheels 👍

To be honest I still prefer driving in GT5, but I definately prefer racing in S2U.

It seems that no matter what class of car you pick, the races in S2U are always exciting. The field looks great and lively with all the different customisation options and liveries (I have yet to see the same livery twice in a race).
Crashes and damage are amazing and the whole look, feel and sound is gritty and fun.

However, the feeling of wheight in a car, the link between the tires and the steering wheel and I'd dare say the general driving physics of the car are done better in GT5. This is of course nothing new, and EA/SMS even said they didn't go for that kind of realism, but if we're talking about driving (taking an M3 to the nurburgring just for a few laps) than I prefer GT5.
Just to be clear, taking an M3 around the ring is probably the only thing I would load GT5 for now. Since I got it S2U is in my PS3 almost all the time.

On another note: I also love the focus on fun in S2U. Progres in series is automatically saved (Maybe even for multiple series) you can restart a race even if it's the second race in a series without having to do the whole series again, you can set the difficulty during your career to make annoying events less annoying (I hate the lotus too). These are all things the elitists would never want implemented in GT5, but it all makes for a much nicer gaming experience.

I've been a GT fan since GT1, but I get more excited about where the Shift series might be going at this time. If they get the physics right, GT is history for me.

Yeah i think most of us now only put GT5 on for a spin round the ring! With Shift's 2 ring i find it incredibly difficult compared to GT5's unless im driving the mini :)

iLex, I think you should have a second look at what Shift 2's physics are doing after the second patch (hopefully out soon, includes the lag fix in particular), the weight transfer in Shift 2 is fantastic and really quite a way ahead of GT5, same with tyre subtleties. GT5 is easy to master the limits, Shift 2 is incredibly satisfying and scary if you master them :)

You really feel in Shift 2 that when you're on the limit you could lose it any second if you don't keep it together. I have it on PC so am already experiencing this as the lag doesn't exists there, so I can't wait for the PS3/xBox players to experience the same thing :)

I load GT5 only to take pretty photos of cars. S2U to me is a far better game, and I think some people don't realize how good the actual physics and tire model is. There is room for improvement always, but to me it is much better than other games. Nothing is more fun than starting at the back of a 15 car pack, and navigating the AI, they actually respond to you, if you respect them they will respect you. Many times when I avoided hitting the AI, it responded in kind when i was aggressive, if you are overly aggressive with them (lots of light taps) they will block you, hold their line and if you try to overtake them will give you a nudge to return the favor. I treat them now like real competitors and the racing is even more exciting. Side by side entry into a tight turn, feeling the car on the edge of understeer, and seeing the grass patch hoping to have your wheels straight once you touch it cause the fear of spinning out sets in, thus making the choice to back off, or risk it. Just pure excitement.

Use the helmet cam and turn of the hud, and o lordy does this game rock.

I honestly think you really have to commit yourself to the experience in this game. I love it, and hope they make a third one, keeping all the things they have now and adding a few more little touches to the game (night and weather changes, pitting, tire wear, improved damage (wheel damage, drag, progressive transmission and engine damage from impact etc.)

There are all the other little things, the little details that make this game so much better than other games. The cars feel alive with items rattling and shaking (hoods, grills, mirrors, wipers etc.) the dirt and debris on the track, the heat waves from the hood and exhaust area, car dirt build up. I can go on and on about the small little things that make this game technically and visually amazing.

Its getting undeserved negative feedback from users, because they expect the game to be like one of the other racing games, when in reality this game is on its own level. Meh, thats my opinion, I think this game is brilliant :):dopey:👍

Definitely the best thing about Shift 2. It takes planning and strategy to pass the AI. You can't just barrel into them and knock them out of the way like in GT5. Even if you are faster you have to hold back and pick the right corner to make a pass. Just like in a real race...
