dude drifting is the new craze..its like the whole JDM thing was.....start now before the posers show up with their neon lights and skyscraper spoilers.....

as for the being dangerous part....I'm not alking about doing it in the middle of the day...I'm saying go find an abandoned parking lot somewhere and learn slowly....start with the e brake then work your way up....anyway the car is a 600 dollar junker so it doesn't matter if you mess up....

I think that drifting is equally as dangerous as street racing....

Here's something....

I've been an automotive enthusiast since 1999. I'm now 17 and there's a lot to learn. Till now I've learned most of the basic things and a few technical things. I know my suspension tuning quite well and if giving the tools, I could prolly tune it well enough.

One thing that needs to be kepted in mind is your limits. Your car has a limit to it. Your tires are what's between you and the road. Don't do stupid things that'll get you into trouble or even risk your life.

Street races in the US are mostly acceleration contests. You haven't seen street racing. This IS a form of street racing but it's all power. The more you have the more you're likely to win.

Take some time into signing up onto a forum that is about your fav car and learn from all the posts. Go attend autocrossing and learn some car control. Maybe you can get yourself into track racing with some buddies.

it takes time to learn about car stuff. I'm a member at www.superhonda.com there are several forums but I'm not too sure of them because I'm a Subaru guy.

I think drifting is a HELL of alot LESS dangerous than street racing...With drifting you're taking corners on average of about 30-40 MPH as a beginner right? and work your way up to about 70-90, because face it not many tracks have the straight aways long enough to work up to 90, and since chokudrifting is as equally popular speed isn't gained their either...Anywho..If you get in a Side/rear impact at 30MPH your chances of living are alot higher than if you get in a frontal collision at 60+ Mph..

Yes street racing in the US is power contest, they usally don't last a long time either.

There are organized drags on the back roads but those are hard to find.

do NOT start with the e-brake (hand brake), unless of course you have a front wheel drive car. but for newbies i would recommend you take a rear wheel drive car, get out in the wet, find and industrial site or a parking lot and just accelerate on corners at low speeds. this will get you used to the tail sliding out and for most people thats all they will want to learn from drifting.

as for the american-style drag/street racing, its an interesting concept but i'd rather take credit for my driving abilities than my car's engine. find a track and race it, you don't even need good cars, so long as you can race other people you will find it much more fun than drag racing (not to mention safer).

Actually nightmage.....What we do is go to this rather large parking lot lot that is infront of a "Big Lots" store at around 2am...and set up cones we have borrowed from vacant construction sites...and set up our own autocross course...pretty nifty, pretty cost effective

I'll stick with my Michigan style power contest...even though it means I lose a lot. :D

I own a FF car....And it's not really drifting....it's more of learning to maintain balance on your car..while dragging the azz of your car....the sad thing is..Most US drifters are so inexperienced that they rely on the E-brake/Hand brake to drift.....So so sad

Drag strip's are for LOZERS! j/k....I don't like our local drag strip though, it's very crowded and not much fun..it's 15 dollars on thursday nights from 9pm to 1pm...And on a slow night there is about 400 cars...And then there are always 2-3 pro's who test, and about 6 private companies with their "Raced out cars" which are usually eclipses and neons....it's about a 1 hour 20 minute wait in between run's...meaning even if you went to tune your car your data would be so spread apart that the climate changes(This is arizona, where the temp can drop 30 degrees in 20 mins) affect what you record...Anywho...I'd rather just do private illegal run&gun's on side streets than pay 15 dollars to push my car around..

fair! :D

though i would recommend anyone serious on drifting to get the cheapest FR car they can find, take some lame tyres and go driving in the rain on a track/deserted road/deserted parking lot.

make sure if you are racing illegally u always have someone around who isn't racing so they can call the ambulance if you wreck ur machines...

my phone has a tracker on it where 911 (emergency #) can track my location and find me.....

I'm lookin for like a 600 dollar beater thats FR so I can learn...

no it came standard on my phone.......for some weird reason i wanted to say the phone was stock  ......anyway when I dial 911 it automatically connects me to the emergency services operator....this number is the same in the whole US...anyway they can track the locaton of my phone using a built in gps that will transmit my location.....without having to do some stupid phone trace too.....It also uses it to give me wheather reports based on where I am at the time....also news sports....etc...

i've used 'stock' to describe loads of things that have nothing to do with cars. i even tried using it for a hamburger at BK recently!! :D my m8 was like "does he still order whoppers without salad?" and i said "nah he eats stock ones now...." :D

its just a word you can use to explain something is "totally original and unmodified from the state it was designed to be in" saves you saying that **** each time.

You know when I read that I burst out laughing. For some reason in my little mind I just had this image of some man just shouting and spitting every where when he typed. Hmmm...mental note...get out more.

Anywayz Wanna_b_rcr why don't you go to your local track and see if they have a track day or do a kinda track fun day. They do this over here in England (so whether you get it in New Zealand is beyond my knowledge), and you pay about £250 depending where you go and these instructors take you round the track, show you the racing lines and then let you have a go in a road car and in a race car. Good way to learn about racing lines and track racing.
