If You Could only Drive One Car for the Rest of Your Life, What Would it be?

My wife and I have no kids, but even so, we'd struggle to manage if our only car was the Porsche. And a 911 is a practical sports car, you can cover decent mileage without incurring horrendoes maintainance costs, it doesn't draw a crowd everytime you drive it, you can park it anywhere and it has a decent amount of luggage space with a big front 'boot' and more usable space by folding the rear seats flat. It will manage the weekly grocery trip and long weekends away, but that's about it's limit.

That's why I picked the 911 Turbo, all those reasons plus nearly 500hp to play with. Atleast like you said Stotty you can live with the 911, you might struggle but you can live with it. How people can say that they can live with some of the others (Zonda, Radical, etc.) is beyond me. :odd:

Plus I'm not looking to bush bash it around the outback areas. :D

Well done some of you for grasping the fact that practicality is needed in a car if it is going to be driven for the rest of one's life.

For me it'd have to be an M5 Touring. Its big (enough), and will more than half excite me when wanted.

But I could be talked into a current model RS6 instead.;)

I'm well aware of that, I was being sarcastic.

Either way it's far more practical than alot of supercars that a few people have posted.

See?
Plently of space in the back. (dunno who the guy is, just a random photo)

It's a hard choice, to be fair. If we're talking about day-to-day driving;

BMW 335d E90 (Pre-facelift) SE w/ Evolve Remap

Why, I hear you ask. This is why;

That's an E46 M3, and M3, a car that will struggle to do 20mpg and the suspension will kill you. The 335d can keep up with it easily, while doing 30+mpg and in relative comfort.

But, if you're talking about for pure performance/exhilaration, basically ignoring practicality/day-to-day usability;

Need I say more?

Well, I'm only 15, but I think my post proves I'm fairly mature and level-headed when it comes to cars ;)

You posted a McLaren F1 :lol:.

No one could live with a supercar for the rest of their life. You might be able to right now but there comes a point when you need something slightly more practical. Hell even I wish I had something practical and I drive a wee economy car.

Even looking at it each day would be enough for me.

+1 👍

It is not practical, I agree, in another thread we had this discussion for a guy that was going for an MX5.
My partner only has 1 car an MX5.

When you need something more practical, loan it from friend. (My company car has to do for that)
Yes you need to give up on children, or have a partner with the M5 touring, RS6 Avant or E AMG T-Model, I would see the C 63 AMG T-model as sufficient. All these assuming that your car for life comes with free petrol.

More practical, but for life, I fear I would stick with a Subaru Impreza STI 2005:

Still a bit expensive on fuel consumption and CO2 taxes though

Volkswagen Phaeton W12 LWB

It's obsessively engineered, you'll never look out of place no matter where you go, has possibly the best interior of any car and is still quick enough to be entertaining when you want.

If I had a client come to my studio in a Mclaren F1, I wouldn't give them any business. You simply can't be going out like that in a professional sense. Even socially, any idea how desperate you'd look picking up someone on a first date?

I think an Audi RS4 Avant (B7) would tick enough boxes for me.

Sounds good to me (although I'd make myself unavailable for pick up until the B8 comes out).

Allow me to rephrase my previous answer- a Lamborghini Countach LP400. In matte black.

OH! And with a trailer hitch. Now I can carry stuff.

People can't even live with it as a pleasure vehicle, I highly doubt you could live with it everyday for the rest of your life.

Well, there is a reason I chose the Countach. It's old, so I won't have to worry that much about cutting through electronics when I'm revamping it.

I'm becoming an automotive engineer, after all. I'll be able to fix one or two of it's problems.

If you start thinking too practically, you'd probably end up nominating whatever you already drive.

I'd love an RS4 but the reality of insurance, fuel and servicing costs makes it prohibitive IRL.

You've got to have some elements of fantasy to your selections.

What I would give to be young and naïve again. Read anything about old supercars, they are insanely expensive to maintain and hard to work on. There is a reason services cost thousands of dollars. They are hard to drive, hard to see out of, aren't terribly reliable and have a niggle of parts being hard to locate.

Would a Countach be a fun pleasure vehicle, ya probably. I think it's one of the most iconic cars of the modern age, I mean ask any male who grew up in the 80's and 90's if they had a poster of one on their bedroom wall and they'll probably say yes. But to live with it every day, I can almost promise you that you couldn't.

Guilty. Mostly.

I have two views on this subject:

1 - Whatever will last for the rest of my life, that doesn't break down, has good gas mileage, four seats, etc.
2 - Whatever my dream car is. If I will drive only one car for the rest of my life, let it be my dream car.

The smartest option is number one, though.

Did you not see the BMW 335d I posted then, or did you just ignore it?

If it was one car that I would have to own, maintain and drive for the rest of my life then it would need to be:
- reliable
- have plenty of available parts
- simple enough to maintain at home
- classic lines so that it ages gracefully
- practical

The only car that I can think of would be a W124 Mercedes Benz e300TD Estate. In black with AMG alloys...like this:

The diesel engine has proven itself to be bullet proof on a wide range of full qualities and in some pretty dodgy environments and the lines have, and I think will continue to, age well.

I guess I'll be driving this for the rest of my life since I already own it, '97 E320 4matic

Although I would probably still be driving this if the wife didn't tell me to sell it. '73 Toyota Corrolla SR5 with a 2TG motor.
