Anyone else think the paper thin DoF in many of these import photos is wearing a little thin?

Nope. I think it's used very well to call attention to the interesting part of a photo, especially when the background is so busy as it often is at events like these. Leave the flat DoF for landscape pictures because in any other application it just distracts from the main subject.

My friend shot a feature for StanceWorks while he was over in Europe a few weeks ago.

This is another feature he did while he was over there. A 782 horsepower E30 M3.

I agree that definitely has its place, but I think that in many of the pictures it's used as compensation for poor composition. Some of the photos I've seen look like their shot at F/1.2 in the daylight.

Not uncommon in parts of Europe, particularly around the Mediterranean. Went up a similarly-steep hill in Ibiza a few months back in a taxi. Jumped out of it pretty quick when it parked at the top as I wasn't expecting the handbrake to hold it... must have been a 1-in-5 gradient, maybe more.
