Subsequently IMDb'd "the fast and the furious" and the earliest non-Roger Corman movie of that name was released the same year:

It's unlikely the kit is a result of the movie's success, rather an example of the sort of vehicle that inspired it. I'm simply given to categorize said sort of vehicle as "faster and furiouser" as a way of diminishing the aesthetic--hence the [intentional] poor grammar.
