Well, the feel of the clutch pedal is quite essential for my choice of wheel. I want it to feel authentic of course. The safe thing would be to invest in the DFGT already and live without the clutch but I could regret that wheel if the G27 turns out to be fully supported by GT5.
 
Thanks for the review! Great news on the feedback, that was my biggest worry, after some time in iRacing I'm none too fond of the feedback in Prologue. Can't wait for Nov 2!
 
I use a G27 and the main reason i bought it was for GT5, i would be slightly disapointed if the clutch wasnt well integrated, though that said most of my racing i dont use the clutch other that for starts (F1 cars), i feel much more comfortable with the flappy paddles and auto clutch (but i guess that goes for most people).

In GT4 the G27 is quite hopeless, insanely heavy steering and FFB is really quite bad, way too strong and doesnt give any feel for the car. I expect GT5 will support the G27 properly though, it is probably the most popular high end racing wheel after its older brother the G25, and i cant see sony messing over a large portion of its player base.

Il say the same for the Fanatec wheels, they seem to be the high end wheel of choice and most of the really serious rigs will have those wheels, sony is likely to have full support for those too.



Im really lookin forward to this game, GT4 for me is only playable by gamepad as i hate the heavy steering on the G27 with it, and otherwise i have GTR2 and Rfactor to keep me busy but it leaves a gap.

The one thing that GT games always do better is the single player/career modes. I love the idea of being able to compete for prizes in events, collect and tune cars and climb the ranks. In Rfactor for example, you win a race and you get 10 points, you win a series and you get more points and a cash prize and thats it.. nothing, the sort of empty feeling that you're accomplishing nothing, no sense of progression or direction, it has the physics and absolutely great driving experience (though not perfect, as ive mentioned before) but the game is missing any direction to what you accomplish.
 
I also have one question on the DFGT wheel. I watched some videos on youtube where people were driving GT5P with this wheel and saw a little delay between the wheel on the screen and the real one. Is this delay really as big as it seems in the videos when youre driving?

If you want the clutch to feel authentic, then none of these wheels will cut it. The arc they travel in is nothing like a real clutch pedal, and the feel that the simple spring gives doesn't represent the "feel" (i.e. the weight, resistance etc.) of a real clutch pedal, given that the resistance changes in a unique manner.

Other than that, I cannot fault my G25. Oh, except I got a load sensor for the brake pedal so I can drive (consistently) without ABS in 5 Prologue :)

You have to bear in mind that those DFGT's there were beyond abuse...it's really a shame but people treat them so bad and I'm guessing these wheels have already seen a few shows (if not than they let monkey's loose on them).

But, I played on two different pods and had no sensation whatsoever about a delay; in fact it all felt very involved and direct. if you do see a delay I'm confident that it is a) faulty hardware or b) camera mishap?

You shouldn't be worried about that, it was true driving bliss!

Yes, most DFGTs were in an truly awful state.

I understood the question in that way, that your turning of the DFGT is not mapped 1:1 on the virtual wheel graphically.

That's because the real wheel has a greater turning radius than the virtual one. I think the graphics are optimised for the controller, which is quite understandable.

But the inputs are spot on.

On a side note: I watched the VW simulator game thingy in the far corner of the gamescom, and they had 1:1 visual representation of the G25 in-game.

What a horrible sight when the virtual driver crossed the arms in sharp turns. I always thought 1:1 would be the way to go, but it just looked so very wrong.

I was, too, impressed by the driving experience beyond words. Sure, in my beloved Shift, the Nordschleife looks far more menacing, but in GT5 I was never quite comfortable. I knew I should be able to take that corner in 3rd gear flat, but there was always the sense I could be pushing it a bit too far. Very subtle, very disturbing but so very brilliant :D

Yes. Unfortunately there is a delay and it does affect gameplay (ie. not just cosmetic). But only Slightly.

People will tell you otherwise but I have personally experienced small lag on every wheel I've tried while using multiple TV/hdmi combos in GT5P. It's more obvious if you are steering fast so if you don't drift you might not even notice it.

Don't let that dissuade you from getting a DFGT or any other wheel though! :dopey:

That last paragraph just made my heart beat a little faster. Yes, the Nordschleife in SHIFT while undeniably great to drive but unfortunately just like the other great tracks in the game, Road America and Donington, the underlying physics robs too much enjoyment out of the game. I simply can't wait to drive the full 25km course in a BMW M3 GT2 (which I really,really hope and quite certain will be in GT5).
