I have no problem with it, and still don't see why someone would have a problem with it and be in the KKK. Or and extremist version of the Black Panthers anyway.
I little story from the south.
I (my neighbour, but lets just say "I" because it's eaiser to type) was in Missouri 2 months ago and stopped by a local mall. It was just like any other mall, except for one small, glaring detail. I stopped in the foodcourt to get a bite to eat, and when done I took my tray to the garbage can as usual, dumped my emtpies/uneaten in the trash, and put it on the stack above the garbage can. That''s when I was approached by a big fatarse cop who stared me in the eye and went "Now whatcha think'y'r doin' there, boy?", and responded with "Um...putting my tray away...duh?". Well, wrong answer, apparently. The cop starts layin into me about how I'll put these (black) women out of work, by doing their job for them. It didn't occur to me (my neighbour) at the time, but when I looked around I noticed they were all black. Quite frightening indeed.
But, the worst has yet to come.
We stopped in a local restaurent around 10:00am, and it was just your basic little truckstop restaurent. There was a healthy mix of people in the crowd and I thought maybe it was just....*ahem* employment attitudes? No, apparently not. About 10 minutes into my meal and black man with a white girl walked in. But how did I know? All the truckers stopped eating, stopped drinking and smoking, stopped talking, and stared. They just stared. They all looked like they were pinching themselves to keep from attacking the poor fellow. Luckily his girlfriend immediately noticed they weren't welcome and suggested they leave, in case some redneck attacked them.
I'm still not sure what the point of the story is, but it's pretty amazing that this sort of racism still exists. In Portland, there are interracial couples all over and nobody cares, I don't quite understand American culture.
