Is GT6's AI actually as unrealistic as we think it is?

Ok not a pro video there, but you can notice the AI is not as bad as we may think when they have pressure on them. They still struggle to pass other cars.

It was still slow through corners and really slow down the straights, with no attempts at defensive positioning at all

Well they aren't very aggressive. But I don't see, at least in the video, why it should be "unrealistic". Imo, his driving can be compared to a normal fast race driver. Except we, human virtual race drivers, take much more risks because in reality you have the constant fear of accidents and other things. Their driving looks decent to me. Sure it can be better, way better. But it isn't "unrealistic" Imo.

You've clearly never watched Rally Finland or the Monaco GP if you think drivers are worried of death. If a driver was worried about crashing then no one would sign them because they'd be miles too slow. Why do you think F1 qualifying is separated by tenths of a second? It's because they're all driving their car at absolutely 100% of what's possible.

Well yeah, you still have to win in 3 laps stating in last, the behavior though doesn't resemble the SSRX videos, it just looks like they brake early, as usual nothing to do with your position or proximity to them. In your other video they slow down for you specifically to catch up, they didn't do that in this video. They just braked early as they always do, that's not the same...
If you watch the video again you'll realize it's crystal clear that AI slow down on purpose to let the user pass.

Dang...

Since when is "Arcade mode", "serious mode"?
And since when is "Career/Simulation", "easy mode"?

(These are not my personal words, but this is exactly my view on this part of the issue)

"Both can be challenging and fun, but arcade games tend to have an easier learning curve. It can be challenging, but allows either a casual gamer or a novice to jump in and be quick while a true sim requires practice and has a steeper learning curve. A true sim is going be a game that you can’t just jump in and go fast and win. An arcade game is a bit of a level playing field."

So this whole idea of "Anyone should be able to finish Careermode" is just the wrong way of thinking.
Arcade should be easy, Simulation should be hard. Not the other way around.

I think Career mode should be hard and Arcade mode should be anything you want it to be because you can set up your own races.

I mentioned it in another thread, but 18 years ago, Formula 1 '97 was top knotch in the AI department (with car damage, tire wear, fuel consumption etc. etc.).
22 cars, with qualifying, grid starts and even disqualifications...
That was a racing game.

I found Formula One 2000 for the PS1 in a cupboard today, and, with nothing better to do, had a go on it. After all these years, it is still a really playable and enjoyable game. The AI are competitive, there's qualifying, flags and rules, a safety car, tyre wear, fuel consumption, random mechanical failures, damage, and a full race weekend format with proper qualifying. There's false starts too, and you have the option of entering and exiting the pits without a computer assist. How is this possible with the few MB of RAM the PS1 provides? Because that is largely irrelevant to the presence of the features in the game - they are design issues.

This fits into GT6 in two ways - one, the racing simulation could be largely improved by taking the time to design the races more realistically by including these things. Secondly, while I appreciate that system limitations may play a part, choosing to implement rubber-banding, rolling starts and crazy AI driving routines (half-throttle on straights, being hard on the brakes) whilst leaving out qualifying, is just rubbish design.
