I'm sure you can get better races this way, although some things just can't be changed, like the indicator thingy on Nürburgring or the fact that the AI is always slow as f through the COD on Dragon Trail.
But with all respect, how long does it take you to find all the right settings whenever you choose a new car? I guess it's a lot of trial and error before you find the settings that give you a close race. I won't say I don't have the time for this but I definitely don't have the patience.
The thing with the slow Ai at some certain places or spots around the track has to do with their general attitude or understanding of track limits.
You will never actually see the Ai cutting the track or abusing the track limits to their advantage.
The Road / Track between the white lines as well as 2 tires on a curb at most in some minor situations is their defined track limit.
Hence they slow down especially at these places where a track limits abusive approach is the fastest way.
Let alone that particular behavior makes them slower than the average Joe in most instances.
The Nordschleife / Indicator thing is actually something I personally appreciate as it's something I use to do too.
Especially when a faster car has got a run on me coming out of a corner or down the straight, I usually tend to indicate and let them know that I'm going to let them pass me as I'm not keen on fighting or blocking the faster driver as for most instances it's just gonna cost both of us precious time.
And as we all know, time once being left on the table can not be gained back hence it's smarter racecraft to let them by and try to gain back the position without time loss.
And to be clear and honest, it took me quite a lot of trial and error in the beginning until I finally got behind them correct "general" settings.
But once these so called general opponents settings became clear, it honestly doesn't take more then 2 to 5min to find the right settings for my car to make racing the Ai a worthwhile experience.
Here's my approach:
You simply run 1 lap with the Ai and then you compare a: your lap time compared to theirs and b: how fast and where and in particular how you gain time on them.
If you gain time by solely out accelerating them > simply lower the HP output and then fine tune the top speed as you will notice at which speed you are going to start gaining on pure top end. At that point you simply cap your Top speed and if needed adjust the gear ratio.
If you gain on them by being able to brake later and accelerate earlier then what they do > simply add some ballast and always use at least 1 tire compound worse then what they do as well as always use stock brakes and make sure you don't use ABS.
And of course, stick to their track limits rules.
With GR group cars it's basically a very quickly done and sorted out thing.
1 lap against them should be indicative enough to set up your vehicle accordingly.
With specified pp based cars it can be a little bit more tricky but as long as you have a field of very similar paced pp wise opponents it also shouldn't take you more then 1 or 2 laps at most.
A different story occurs when setting up multiclass GR group races as well as non restricted pp class races,
I these instances it's up to you personally which specific opponents class pace you aim to match.
But again the approach under general custom race settings is ALWAYS the same like I have described in my previous post.
The car specific settings are also in general always the same, meaning that you should always balance your cars settings to never have a superior car no matter what aspect we are looking at.
Acceleration as well as deceleration and of course braking and top speed should ALWAYS be set in a way to match your opponents abilities at best.
Because you will notice that as soon your car is not superior by any of these attributes, your opponents will race you in a way more realistic and logical manner. They will behave and react appropriately to the pace you are doing.
The discrepancy in pace is what makes the Ai behave like brain dead monkeys.
As soon as all the above mentioned factors are balanced to a level playing field... This is where racing the Ai becomes a whole new and completely transforming experience.
Their racing lines as well as braking points will match yours.
Their Top Speed as well as accelerating abilities will match yours.
Cornering speed will match yours.
From that point on, racing and gaining positions WITHOUT making contact becomes an art and a truly immersive driving experience.
Because racing the Ai or humans is exactly this.
An art which is been performed by racecraft and smart driving.
Anything else is borderline boring and pathetic chase the rabbit Ai unrealistic behavior which I can't stand.
It's not about winning every race, it's about how true to life the experience can be, with the outcome never known until the checkered flag has been waved 🙂
