Depending on how deep your pockets are, and what the vehicle laws are like in your country, if you decide that your MX-5 needs a little more "oomph", V8 engine swaps are not uncommon.

There's a place relatively close to me that will drop in a Ford small block V8, for about $4,000 US. :)

That isn't what the single women, rich housewives, and kids thought. ;)

The Colorado is a mid-size (think Frontier or Tacoma(?) or Hilux). It's utilitarian, but rugged, and thus, masculine. The whole notion of "compensating" is something entirely made up by the have-nots, because it makes absolutely zero sense (no girl will think a guy has bigger junk based on a bigger vehicle, and if he's smaller, then he'll face the music when the pants go down, so why bother? Might as well stuff a sock down there, for all it's worth)

Not saying buy a truck. You asked for input on perception of a vehicle, the comparison vehicle is a 4 door, not an MX-5, but it's only sin is being bland. The MX-5 does carry a girly connoation on top of being small, cutesy and impractical.

BTW, someone cited the Fiat 500 - those are unisex....and cool (despite being FWD).

I live in the Netherlands, so it would be more expensive. Also, I am a 19 year old student. So a MX-5 NC is my whole budget. ;)

I didn't want to sound like a *. Sorry if I did...

Most people here in the Netherlands think you are a sad man if you drive something like that, but I am sure that it's different in the US as there drive a lot of those. That might also make the MX-5 girlier in the US than in Europe, if you know what I mean. :)

Yeah. Like they said in that video - if you are in trouble, you call a guy with a truck, he can tow you out, or help you move something large, or be more likely to have tools and skills to use them. Fail to see how that is sad. (not upset with you, just boggled by the whole notion)

Hey, if you're after a fun drive, why not a Carver (I think it's called)?

I love the fact some people think MX-5s are girly / hairdressers cars : it drives them even more mad when I completely outrun their fatass wheelboxes on small b-roads and mountain passes.

Plus, people with old english roadsters or stuff like that often wave you and sometimes think you're driving a new Triumph they didn't knew about. And the NA is the perfect car to sneak in between oldtimers on the road.

I didn't know that car was available... Also, the coupe version is far too expensive for me. :(

It is not. There was a concept, ready to go into production, but it was cancelled.

I assume you live in the US where this kind of truck is very common. If so, I can completely understand that they have the image you describe. :)

But... Here in the Netherlands these kind of trucks are not even available and are extremely expensive to run. So, if someone has one it's imported. Because economical and small vehicles are VERY popular here, the image of trucks is bad.

Calling it sad wasn't the right word, sorry for that! It sounded a bit harsh, but I hope you understand why most people have a negative opinion about the trucks here in Europe. :)

Just so you know, to coin a phrase, where I come from, the Colorado/Canyon is the Miata of trucks. Just sayin'..:sly:

Never heard that. I don't like Chevy. I wasn't trying to talk him into a Colorado. 8" in overall width though, if even that, it's really not much size difference. And being smaller doesn't make something girly anyway, the GT-40 isn't girly, but it's tiny.

..........I used to like a Miata, but after being "bombarded" by the duplicates in various GT games, nowadays I couldn't give a rat's...behind if it fell down a mine shaft. The new one looks good, I won't deny that, but its original design certainly didn't help with its image - there are few cars, iconic cars, that gets stereotyped whether it's warranted or not due to how they were designed and marketed.
Oh I voted "Hell Yeah, It IS girly..."

 post stereotypes about one car, defends a common stereotype about another car.

OP, this is the kind of person that would call the car girly, in other words the close minded opinion of someone you should not care one bit about. I've never looked at a truck and thought that the man inside was any more a man then the guy driving a Miata, a Mini, or a Beetle. If one feels that way when driving a truck, then yeah, he's over compensating.

Even funnier saying that you'd call a guy with a truck because he has tools and knows how to use them. Where do you get your jokes from?

California. Not the least bit surprising. You're laughing way too hard at your own jokes. Thou dost protest too much.

Girly?

No.

Girly?

No.

Dressing something up doesn't change it. Putting rail systems and lights and folding stocks on a semi-auto rifle doesn't make it an assault rifle. Putting numbers, wheels, and wings on a girly car doesn't make it not so.

Don't misunderstand - that doesn't mean it's BAD, or incapable, in any way. It's purely about the image it presents.

Similarly, a friend of mine painted his 288 GTO bright pink. That doesn't make the 288 girly. It's still a 288 GTO.

So, a "Lotus" "Elise" is more masculine? Go figure. The NC MX-5 has no curvature to it. There's really no sexiness to it. Its just a small drop top. Now, if you were to say an Astra Convertible or Sebring Converible. Even a PT Cruiser convertible is girly(strictly my own opinion). Those are some UN-roadsters that feel right with such a moniker.

no I don't get it cus Sodium is Na and is more crystal-metal-silvery than white. Salt is NaCl.

Marketing speak, salt = sodium. Good lord, what a killjoy.

I see you live off stereotypes  how sad.

My own jokes? I didn't post any. I'm laughing at you.

Totally proving the point. Talk about closed minded. A mind so dense no semblance of reality can get through.

So, a "Lotus" "Elise" is more masculine?

Totally. It looks mean/aggressive. It's only reason for being is to go quickly around corners. It's not practical, and mid-engined to boot. Sort of like how the v6 mustang is more girly than the v6 f-body, because it's easier to live with and drive around just to look good in. Like the Miata is vs the Elise.

You happen to be the perfect example of the saying "ignorance is bliss"

The fact that you think you made any kind of point against me is funny. The only thing you've proven is that you live and breath stereotypes. You use one I bring down one car but defend against one and say trucks are manly. Trucks only seem manly to people that feel the need to prove something. I'm saddened to see that we share a common interest.
