Its an RWD, so no, its not a girly car!
I always wanted an NA back then when i just got my drivers license, but because the lack of money and the (great) nissan primera p10 i already had i never got one.
And now since i am married and have a child the possibilities to own a two seater in the near future are very very low.

But if i would be 19 like you: Go and get one, i would prefer such a roadster over every 3er BMW or Audi!

A BMW or Audi is also far more expensive to run!

The first thought that springs to mind is "cars are inanimate objects, they don't have gender identities."

But of course, the MX-5, as with the New Beetle or Fiat 500, is a car which for whatever reason people view as being on the feminine end of the spectrum.

This, of course, only makes it more manly if a guy drives one.

The same people that call it girly are the same people that say corvette drivers are compensating.

It's a car that attracks

1. Men who want to drive a cheap, fun rwd sportscar
2. Men who are gay
3. Men who have lady like behaviour
3. Women

So that would make it a more "feminine" orientated car.

Don't you think that group 1 is by far the biggest one?
Most gay guys and (straight) girls that I know want a Fiat 500, Mini Cooper, Peugeot 206CC or Ford Ka. ;)

Top Gear did an episode (OK, several) with the ape man and the little guy driving through Saint Tropez in a convertible Bentley. That was considered to be viewed as two gay men in the Bentley. So if you're into believing the stereotypes you're going to miss out on owning and driving some of the most fun cars to drive in the world.

The Miata handles well and is a probably the most dependable sports car you could possibly own. I only have one friend that owns one. He's a retired Vascular Surgeon that could own a Ferrari if he wanted to.

Girly? Nope. Small, RWD sports car with great track potential. And convertible, to boot? Sounds like something a guy would enjoy.

Not that it matters, since driving a Miata won't suddenly shrink your junk into nonexistence.

Well,

My boyfriend had several proper 'testosterone' cars the last 20 years. Though and masculine cars like a 80's BMW 3-series coupe, Toyota Corolla coupe (not the Levin, but like this one) and the AW11 Mr2. He never get noticed by girls that much.
Then he sold his AW11 and bought a small city car. A Seat Arosa...small funny car and good enough to do the home-work journey's.. didn't care anymore about the 'girl/boy' car nonsense. He actually got attention right away.. Girls loved the mini-Seat. His next (and partly my own) car, was an overload of 'girlyness'.

But the fact is, it was an amazingly good car, very good interior and then he got lots of attention by female collegae's. So in that sentence, men who want to show their cars (and other stuff) to a woman and want some attention...they have to switch to more girly cars... And we, women, will get more room to switch to more masculine cars :D

Or buy yourself a Chiwawa.

A few things come immediately to mind there - girls may like the girly car (which is how/why they are girly), and THAT is what catches their eye. That does not mean in any way that they find the man driving it (more) attractive for doing so; IOW they like it for themselves rather than as an accessory for a man. 2) They may well perceive the man to be gay, thus harmless. Women like gay guys. Actually, they seem to love gay guys. But that doesn't mean they want to take one to bed. They feel safe with them because those guys aren't leering and mentally undressing them and trying to get them into bed. 3) A guy who isn't gay driving a car like that probably is in a relationship - THAT makes a guy more attractive to other women than anything else. That has always been a bit confusing, but is true nonetheless. Of course, there are other signs that go with that too, it's not just a car disguise. It can almost be sensed even when you are far away from your car. But in the end, it isn't really the car making the guy more attractive or desirable.

Flipping it around, I bought a V8 rwd, unashamedly aggressive beast because I wanted it. I didn't think girls would care at all. Yet, to my surprise, hot girls constantly tell me how awesome it is and how hot I look in/with it. The first time this happened I was stunned. This hot red head and her friends were gushing over it and calling it a p-magnet, and I almost argued with them because I could not wrap my head around it, I said "if it was a Ferrari, sure, or even maybe a Porsche or Corvette, but it's not". They assured me it didn't matter, it was hot. Which flies directly in the face of all the people claiming that getting in a miata will make a man more manly (it really doesn't guys - but that doesn't mean that the OP should avoid getting one, it's still a great handling car and fun and cheap).

It doesn't matter even if Chuck Norris owned one, mx-5s are girly cars. The combination of being a small and convertible car is automatic girly car territory imo. Doesn't matter how good they are.

So... Ariel, Caterham and Lortus all make girly cars? Also Z4s, SLKs, S2000s and Boxsters are all girly?

This whole debate is pointless. The answer is yes and no. When it's driven by a girl, it's a girl's car, and when it's driven by a guy, it's not. MX-5 is great at two things, being a fun to drive roadster and being a fun looking roadster. Saying that fun to drive RWD car is for guys or small fun looking car is for girls is simply wrong. Why couldn't a girl want a fun to drive roadster so she could go for a track day or a drive on a twisty country road. Seriously, it may not be very common thing to happen, but what makes it so hard to understand for some people.

The perpetuation of this thread into 4 pages is disappointing. Gtplanet's a fairly popular automotive/motorsport forum, so the 'girliness' of a car being discussed at this length probably says something about the automotive community. Grow up and be more secure about yourselves people.

It's just occured to me that there are probably thousands of insecure guys who chose not to use the Mazda MX-5/Miata at the beginning of GT3, 4 and 5, for no better reason than 'girliness'. I find that hilarious.

Very girly just like the new Beetle and BMW's Z3 cabrio.

OR... Now here's an idea.. A Peugeot 207 CC, like the one in your avatar? A car which replaced the 206 CC - a vehicle whose byers were 88% female. Why not try to find statistics to back up your opinion rather than jumping to a predetermined conclusion that only exists in your head?

Personally the whoe yes/no girly debate is drivel anyway. Drive whatever you like, because the long and short of it is that nobody really cares.

I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything, but I think you'll find his profile pic is actually a Peugoet RCZ. A completely different type of car

We need a third, in the middle option.

It's kinda girly and very awkward with a guy sitting beside you but it's a good track car and... I don't know. It's not overly feminine.
