I'm really in two minds about this news story that two scientists are planning to clone a woolly mammoth.

http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16188009

Part of me thinks it's a fascinating idea, but another part of me thinks that maybe they should just leave the past in the past.

To quote Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park 'Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.'

What do you think?

Taking this one stage further, if, in future, they decided it WAS possible to clone dinosaurs, should that happen? Would you want to see them? I have to admit that if there was a real-life Jurassic Park I would want to go, despite my feelings that humans really don't have the right to bring these dead creatures back to life. Illogical, maybe, but as I said I really am torn over this issue.

I find it a fascinating prospect that extinct creatures could be brought back by science. Is it ethical? I don't know. Do I want it to happen? Definitely.

If they can clone this one species and them manage to progress, I'd like to see the results up close and personal.

They could bring back the Dodo while they are at it. Who needs evolution anyway?

That would be cool.

We don't really know much about the Dodo. People laughed at the poor creatures because of the way they were unfortunately proportioned. Artists took this to their advantage and the paintings of these creatures are thought to have highly emphasised features - as far as I know we don't have an accurate idea of what a Dodo actually looks like.

It would be fascinating if we could bring back Dinosaurs. But what's to say they would even survive? The world is a very different place, they'd have an entirely different diet, climate, environment, and a much smaller area to move around in.

I don't think safety would be too much of a problem as, particular for carnivores, you would need absolute maximum security, with backup generators and what not, which can be managed. But even so, we don't know much about them beyond their skeletons and their diet, which we couldn't provide for them, so I'm not sure if they would last long.

Nope.

Not without a biodome of some sort. Dinosaurs relied on a much more oxygen rich atmosphere (and significantly higher density). Scientists speculate that the large flying dinosaurs couldn't fly in today's atmosphere because of the reduced density.

I knew about this 2 years ago. Haven't heard about it again until now.

Well, judging by this ad in my local free paper today, Jurassic park is already here! :)

Why am I thinking the whole point of this thread was to set up for that pic?

Because you're a cynic? :)

No, I genuinely posted about the mammoth before we got the free paper. We are supposed to get it on a Thursday, but it's usually a Friday, sometimes a Saturday, and that's if we even get it at all.
