Kinda major earthquake hits NZ

Glad to hear you're OK Sharky!

For those 65 people killed, that really sucks. It's strange how sometimes a weaker earthquake can cause so much more damage.

It's because it was so shallow. When I first heard of it I wondered why there was so much fuss. The September one was bigger in magnitude. My mum was at work when someone came running in asking to use their computer for information and she wondered why he was spazzing out.

I just saw the news and the footage they had was amazing. I didn't know it was that severe. I hope everyone from GTP in NZ are safe and doing well.

Was at work (supermarket) stacking shelves when the quake happened. There was a rep a couple bays down from me and i thought she was shaking the shelves while she was re-arranging some products until i looked at her and she asked me if it was an earthquake.
Was about to say no until i looked at the shelves on the other side and they were wobbling too - the aisle signs hanging from the ceiling were also swaying and the cups/mugs hanging behind me were wobbling too. Pretty much all discussion customers/staff were having in the shop turned to earthquakes then.

A fellow staff member said its probably centered at Te Anau, but i had a feeling that the most likely place would be Christchurch again. A wee while later the shelves started rocking etc again for one of the aftershocks. To my knowledge nothing fell off in the shop either time.
Won't be an order tomorrow since our main distribution center is in Christchurch.
Apparently when the shop owner and assistant manager went around changing the instore TV monitors (at least 20 big and small ones in the shop?) to the news instead of the normal continuous instore promotions, everyone turned to watch them. I was at home on my lunch break watching the news on TV.

I'm so used to watching earthquake/disaster devastated footage from countries around the world on the news and feeling bad for them but then not worrying too much about it - but when its right at your doorstep in your own country it really hits home that its a serious issue. The September quake last year was quite shocking and couldn't get over the damage it did.

But the quake today, unlike last time its nearly bought me to tears quite a few times now - because the damage is just so much worse, and right in the middle of the day during lunch too. It felt so wrong going back to work after lunch and carrying on as if nothing had happened. Me and my fiance were just in Chch last Thursday (passing through though, but still) too and it actually looked like a normal city again.

I haven't heard from any of my family there yet, but will try contact them soon.

First thing i thought of when i felt the earthquake and found out it was in Chch again was the cathedral - somehow it just looks so weak and vulnerable now, not imposing and strong anymore. :(

They have unconfirmed reports that the death toll could eventually end up between 200 and 400. :s :(

Got watered eyes seeing the footage. My prayers go out to all of you. If there is anything I can support you with GT-wise, I´m happy to help..

I did hear some news about the Earthquake last night, but I was shocked to see the amount of damage caused by it when I checked the news this morning. I have family members living in Christchurch, I really hope they are alright.

Errrrrggggghhhhh. The ground is literally rumbling every five minutes, and making my house rattle uncomfortably every fifteen. Very unpleasant, wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. The pictures show the power of the quake alright (although the CBD took the most damage; from what I know the northern part of the city is relatively free of damage. Not sure about Lyttleton yet, and being the major port for the entire island it is imperative that it remains functional), but the actual feeling when the shocks hit - you can't really describe it with words nor convey with images. Lots of messages of support for us residents have been coming in from all corners of the world, we greatly appreciate it.

About time I got myself some sleep (it's almost 1am)... hopefully nothing too untoward happens during the night, I'd like to keep on living (and have a house to do so in) thanks planet Earth!

Haven't felt any aftershocks down here since the second one. And hope not to (i.e. that there won't be any more in Chch either - wishful thinking though).

I honestly think a lot of people are going to permanently move out of Christchurch now. I'm pretty sure i would. :(

The earthquake caused a 30 million-tonne chunk of ice to break off from the Tasman Glacier, more than 150 miles away on the West Coast.
Tourists say the icefall caused waves of up to 3.5 metres in height which swept up and down the lake for 30 minutes.

I grew up in Christchchurch and most of my family lives there so it was a great relief when I heard they were ok. It really is quite emotional looking at the pictures, thinking of family when you live in another country, feeling powerless to help and watching your home city get destroyed... I have memories of being up the cathedral tower enjoying the view and atmosphere of below - it was always full of people, being the middle of the day I shudder to think how many people were up that tower when it hit :(

As I said in the other thread (which I apologize for making, I wasn't aware of this one) I hope everyone from these forums and their families that live in Christchurch are ok.

It's pretty horrific looking at those photos, I'm glad all the GTPers appear to be ok but I can't imagine how traumatic it is being there.

I made a mistake I thought magnitude doubles with each digit higher, but it seems it's a factor of 10. So last year's 7.1-magnitude earthquake was more than 10 times as strong as this one.

My thoughts and best wishes are with any members affected by this...

In the video above, was that S15 okay? I'd hate to see it badly damaged
.. I'm almost embarrassed to share an internet forum with people who can make comments like this. 🤬 pathetic.

I think that was a joke not genuine disproportioned care. But in either case as i'm "anti-reactionary" I have to say it's acceptable for some humans to have object priorities rather than other human priorities. But as so often is the case, that is for another discussion elsewhere. But for writing this maybe I should be reactionary-anti-reactionary.
Sharing a forum doesn't mean you are of a like mind, so I wouldn't get drawn by association. At least it's not an abusive Youtube comment.

I was only joking. Though the S15 is currently my favourite car, humans come first of all things.
I just looked at the images on the last page. I'm glad we don't get these kind of things in the UK, I can't imagine how sad it is over there right now. I hope as many as possible are okay, and I pray for those who may have lost loved ones in this tragic event.

September's was 10 times stronger, but 25km deeper. Yesterday's was more than 10 times weaker, but only 5km underground.

It's not really the time for joking though when an earth quake wrecks a city and kills at least 65 people is it? You may not have meant any harm by it but it is quite insensitive.

Hopefully the rescue mission through the night will have been successful and people will be waking up to a less devastating day although it's likely it won't really be hitting them until now.

In that case I apologise. I had no idea how bad this event was until after I had made such an insensitive post.

A 1 meter height shift difference from one end to the other it has been reported. The previous quake dissipated a lot of its energy before the surface.

That's something I've been wanting to find out, of the New Zealanders on here who besides me is also from Christchurch?

Scientists are saying this earthquake that killed 75 and 300 missing was just an aftershock of the 2010 quake. But as has already been said it was more harmful because of location and time.

Hotel Grand Chancellor - tallest or second-tallest building in Christchurch (26 storeys), and as you can see it's sunk on one side. Apparently moved 1m horizontally in ten minutes earlier.

There's no way that's going to remain standing for long, either it comes down in a controlled demolition or it's left to fall down by itself - if the latter happens it'll take out the entire block it's located in and then some.... :scared:

You've got to be kidding me. Aftershock after all this time?

Those pics posted by Skyline's something else. Where I'm originally from, Japan, earthquakes were very common. But I have never witnessed anything close to tenth of what is in those pictures. Devastating.

And Sharky still feeling the ground shaking, even into the night. My reaction was pretty much "are you kidding me?".

I sure hope to god that there will be no more damage from this. I hope.

It's been building for 10,000 years, so a slip, then slip a bit more 5 months later is not that long after.

Man those rescue workers standing under the leaning building have a commendable amount of balls.

If anyone wants to donate this seems to be the best avenue all help would be greatly appreciated
