Hmm...been feeling like crap (allergies + infuriating head cold), so I've been putting this off until yesterday and this morning.

So far, I'm almost 2/3rds of the way through, and the Alfa 2.0 has been the fastest by a second or so. Of course, I still have a few high power cars to do, but still...that's kinda sad. I think my lack of tuning skills is helping to interfere as well. Why can't we do another supercar race on Tahiti Road so I can actually WIN again? ;p

Ah well, I would never have driven most of these cars if I hadn't been invited to this racing series so it's fine I guess, just denting my ego a bit.

Sorry I haven't sent any times in for this week jeff. My schedule has been off-the-wall this week, so much so that I haven't even gotten to do any preliminary testing yet...

Results are in for Super Touring Cars at SSR5, see post 95 on page 5. Alfa 2.0TS FTW!

Diehard Viper Fans Converge to Demolish Seattle Circuit

No, seriously, there are bits and pieces of it strewn all over the place and lodged permanently in bumpers and sidepanels. Had to cancel the Muscle Car Classic, but suprisingly, the fans aren't complaining. They've gotten to witness the hard work of thier perennial favorite finally pay off. After three 2nd place finishes in participation in all 9 previous events, Xenn has risen to the top of the leaderboard with a major statement.

No less remarkable, skynyrd and HEAVYSET find themselves not far behind, both turning in their best finishes in quite some time. In fact, all in all, this was the most competitive event to date, with no stragglers, everybody finishing hard. No wonder the fans weren't disappointed!

Full results:
1:34.307 - Xenn leaving blisters in his wake
1:35.898 - MadMax86
1:36.179 - skynyrd

1:36.767 - jeffgoddin
1:36.879 - HEAVYSET
1:36.979 - JISAW
1:37.504 - MazdaPrice
1:37.610 - stoperan
1:44.xxx - jacnob

The Viper...at SEATTLE?!

Are you insane?!

Hills, sharp turns, rear wheel drive, 400+ hp...wait a minute, this sounds kinda fun...

I foresee much spinning out and going helicopter on the hilly section in the near future.

[edit] As a side note, I felt that with more time and laps, I could have gotten the Taurus up there with the front runners in the last race. I was dropping half a second or so every lap until I hit 10 laps, with lots of time still able to be cut.

Hee hee! Yeah, I tried it at the Muscle Car cup and won by a few seconds (a lot more power but a lot less handling than the competition.) But letting it run after the finish watching the AI drive it, hoo boy! That was funny! Eventually got passed, so it's a pretty fair matchup if you want to try the race afterwards.

Oh, and so's you know, the next event I'm pretty sure will have full racing suspension, so you can adjust springs to your heart's content. Normal tires and lots of MR power, but full racing suspension.:sly: Edit, got a couple requests for this, make that simulation tires!:mischievous:

Something tells me this will pace the field this week. :)

I only ran a few laps, but managed a 1.44. I'm not done, just wanna see where i stand. Can we use the brake balance controler?

Sorry, no assists. Just running the Classic Car race to see if it was winnable, I ran a 1:42.xxx in the 2nd lap, and we do have a report of a sub 1:40 result!

Team MazdaPrice makes an anticipated return in the Standard Viper Cup. Sitting 4th in the average aggregated table, their prescence after a 6 Week absence sends electricity down the paddock.

Their black/white Viper GTS is a credit to the Motor City, and chief driver J.Biela looks confident of a competative performance.

Submitted my lap time.

I also did some machine tests:

stock Viper GTS
400m 12.493 seconds
1000m 22.124 seconds
max speed test 325.35 km/h

Best launched from 2nd gear and shifted at maximum rpm using MT

Hmm...ran a few laps, ended up with a low 1:41 on a sloppy, slidey, wallbanging lap. I'd guess 1:35 would be a good clean lap, with maybe 1:30 for the best racers.

Does that sound about right?

[edit] I'm not done yet, so don't take that as my official time!

[edit 2] Man this car is fun...!

A sub 1'40 would be a pretty good lap , from there i'd say a perfect lap is somewhere in 1'34's.

Y'all know I was gonna really enjoy this one. Right off the showroom floor, baby!!! :)

Might wanna sit down for this one because the 'ol fat man ran 1:36.597 on a squeaky clean lap, number 8 of 10 (forgot I could run up to 25). Didn't touch a wall anywhere, which is a miracle in itself. What's disheartening is none of the sectors on that lap was the fastest overall. Fastest sectors combined, I left nearly a second out there, but it'd have to be a Zen lap for me to put them all together.

The Cobra and Viper are aptly named. All they do is slither around. Much of my time in the corners was spent off throttle just letting the snake sidewind its way through. :)

I've discovered I may have had an advantage. I'm usually 4 seconds off the pace and was wondering why I did better this week. I run all my laps in TT mode from the arcade disc. I usually have to buy the car from the simulation disc then carry it over to the arcade, but this time there was a Viper GTS available for me in arcade mode's Class S. I don't know if it's there for everybody. I took the time to win all of the single races in arcade mode. You unlock cars for that, mostly rally models, but some Class S too. The Viper may have been an unlockable. It's the one I used to set the time of 1:36.597.

I noticed "settings" was greyed out for the arcade Viper, so I couldn't tell what tires it was on. I do know its stats are 449hp/3375 lbs. For comparison, I bought a simulation Viper. Its stats were the same until I took it to arcade mode, where curiously the hp jumped to 463. The weight stayed the same.

I thought I'd run both versions in arcade's TT mode to see if either had an advantage. I ran the sim Viper first. Settings were accessible for the sim Viper and showed it was on normal tires. After 10 laps my best time was 1:37.679. I ran the arcade Viper next and promptly ran a 1:35.865 on lap 2!! WTF?!!

I ran another short session, just to back up my data, this time doing a little better with the sim Viper at 1:36.879. But the arcade Viper still was faster at 1:36.118

I'll leave it up to jeff to decide, but it's clear the arcade Viper has an advantage somehow, despite apparently being down on hp to the sim Viper. The arcade Viper feels just a little more stable.

I do have a request though. Since my original time was only after 10 laps, I would like to have my new times allowed. I assure you, I did not run more than 25 laps total with each car. Choose whichever one and I'll accept.

Arcade Viper GTS= 1:35.865
Sim Viper GTS= 1:36.879

That's good to know. I've never really trusted the cars provided by Arcade mode, mostly because I don't trust any cars the computer uses or provides as being stock. The game's got too many tricks (like the hp multiplier function that's most likely related to the game's rubber band A.I.) that mess with that sort of thing for my tastes. I've noticed myself that sometimes cars give significantly better times in Arcade mode than in Sim mode. Then again, my driving isn't very consistent so it may be my imagination.

Anyway, I barely managed to squeak out a low 1:36 in the Sim mode Viper after running a lot of 1:38s and 1:39s, most of which had a couple hard wall-smacks. I guess I just managed a cleaner lap on that one. There were still places where more time could be shaved off, but I just couldn't pull it off.

I tested the Viper GTS Arcade counterpart and agree it being faster.
In arcade mode you have to choose Racing or drift setting for the race/time trial.
With the Racing setting the Viper has more grip.

I did a 1'34.954 on 6th lap during testing.

GT2 race series 11th event announcement:

MR Challenge at HSR
Dance, MR, Dance!

May 16th opening date, submit results by May 23rd

Tuning allowed: Professional Suspension, Racing Transmission, Simulation/Control Tires *REQUIRED* (not my idea, have fun, I'm scared!)

Yes, that's right, the only mod you get to help you get these skittery little monsters under control is the full professional suspension. See this thread for some amazing insight into tuning MR's.

Cars to pick from, heaviest to lightest (hp listed is as you'd see it in the garage):

Esprit Sport 350, IC-2, Muff-1, ROM = 391hp
MR-2 TRD2000GT, Turbo-2, IC-2 = 387hp
NSX Type S Zero '97, NA-3, ROM = 384hp
MR-2 GT-S '98, Turbo-2, Muff-2 = 384hp
Clio Sport V6 24V, Turbo-2, ROM = 378hp
NSX Type R '92, NA-3, Muff-1, ROM = 378hp
Tom's T020, Weight Reduction Stage 2, All Power Mods = 361hp
Dodge Concept Car, NA-3, Engine Balance, ROM = 319hp
Motor Sport Elise, Turbo-1, Muff-1 = 246hp
Tom's Angel T01, All Power Mods = 244hp
ZZ-III, Turbo-2, Engine Balance, Port Grinding = 240hp
ZZ-S Coupe, Turbo-2, ROM = 239hp
Elise 190, Turbo-1, Muff-3 = 239hp

Take one or more cars from the list above for a spin doing test laps/time trial. On the honor system, in order to keep it fair and not a huge time commitment going for a perfect time, you get 10 laps to go for a best lap time after settling on your tuning (don't abuse the tuning laps for practice, keep them under 2 laps at a time please.)

When you submit your results, feel free to include the details of how you tuned your car and I'll include them in the race report I send out. Things like suspension and transmission settings for example, but also whether you drive AT/MT and what kind of controller if you want.

PM me your results as you get them, let the battle begin!

Results are in, MR Tuning Battle goes to skynyrd!

After 10 strong weeks of continuous competition, it looks like the MR tuning challenge seemed like the right time for many teams to take a week off. Xenn missed his first competition to date, and after last week's victory, his absense is well deserved.

Team Skynyrd got excited when they arrived at the track and saw so many empty garage bays where normally there would be a flurry of activity. But a free pass he would not have, as event organizers team jeffgoddin were sure to do their best to make this a close competition.

At the end of the day, though, skynyrd stood victorious, with a decisive win in his NSX Type S Zero, 0.7 seconds ahead of the next finisher.

No big surprise, but at a high speed track like HSR the heavier cars were able to take advantage of greater top speed, while the lighter cars were unable to benefit from their handling superiority. The MR-2's disappointed as usual, though it must be said their little 2L engines were pushing around a lot more weight per cc of displacement than anybody else in the competition. Tom's T020 stood victorious among the MR-2's, while skynyrd gave the lightweights another Tom's star with a 6th place finish overall for the Angel T01.

Manufacturers results:
1) Honda NSX Type S Zero (skynyrd)

Hmm...I'm going to have to dust off the old PS1 and see if I can get it working long enough to shark the cars into the car lot; I don't have the time or inclination to win the prize cars in addition to tuning and racing all of 'em.

Like the last multicar challenge, most of the work for me is finding them.

I know there are a lot of cars in this game, but at this rate I'm going to have to sell off to keep room in the garage. But I don't want to, they've all been fun. I only have one mem card. Dang limit. 👎

The Dodge Concept Car I have a feeling will be the fastest of the bunch, but it's only available through golding your A licenses (or Gamesharking, or downloading a save state...)

The TRD2000GT you win from the 1st MR event, and the Tom's T020 you win from the 2nd MR event. The Tom's Angel T01 you win from the 1st Pure Sports Car event, and the ZZIII you win from the 2nd Pure Sports Car event. The '92 NSX Type R is used, and the rest are new.

But yeah, I understand memory constraints, etc., but having an infinite or at least 1000+ car garage would be amazing. I love collecting some cars in all the colors they come in, especially the rare ones and prize cars, like the Toyota 2000GT, the old Skylines, both Sileighties, the 240Z's, etc., so I end up with like 80 permanent cars I can't get rid of and only 20 slots for cars I'm currently racing.

There was a set of gameshark codes at one point that gave you a gigantic garage (something like a thousand or so cars, I'm pretty sure you could alter the values to change the garage size to be bigger or smaller if you wanted), but you had to input ALL the values for every car individually afterward, so I never messed with that one much. I imagine it would cause a lot of glitch-related problems down the road, though, since the data for the extra cars most likely overwrote other things. It made the size of your gamesave bigger too, but the memory card still said it was only 4 blocks.

In short, it was way more trouble than it was worth. You couldn't win cars, if you sold a car, you couldn't replace it with another since the game still thought your garage was full since you had already reached 100 cars, and, well, yeah.

Yeah, sorry tankuroded, got you confused with Toronado who wanted updates...

Ran a couple of these, my first time with Simulation/Real-life tires. Verrrry understeery. Ran under 1:08 with the Clio, in the 1:09's with the Angel T01.

I ran what cars I could. All stock from sim mode with stock tires. Settings menu said Normal. All clean laps.

Toms T020- 1:02.321
Espirit Sport 350- 1:04.117
NSX Type S Zero- 1:04.482
Clio Sport V6-24v- 1:05.486
Motorsport Elise- 1:06.355
ZZ S Coupe- 1:06.633
MR2 GT-S- 1:06.969

Okay, I forgot about the sim tire requirement, but damned if I would've wasted money on them anyway. I don't get the sim category. Do the Japanese have a different definition of "normal"? To me Normal means stock, generic, run of the mill, off the showroom floor. To me Simulation also means stock, generic, run of the mill, off the showroom floor. As in Normal. The categories are the same to me. Not to the Japanese, apparently. How can you have two normals?

If they are saying sim tires are the way the grip is supposed to be, then they should be the Normal class. Especially if you're going to call your game The Real Driving Simulator. Am I making any sense?

Normal tires are what comes on your regular passenger car when you buy it from your dealer. Sports tires come standard with your sportier models and exotics, which are unmistakable. Show up for an American LeMans Series race, and you'll need Racing tires. And there shouldn't be all these different compounds either. Forget Hard and Medium and Soft and Super Soft. Actually, my preference would be only two categories, Normal and Racing, with only one compound each.

Sports tires are Normal on a Ferrari. If you want Sport tires on your Mustang, then buy a GT, or one from Saleen, Shelby, Roush. Sport tires should be standard, or Normal, with them too. Whatever. I'm starting to ramble.

Bottom line for me is in this game, running sim tires is equivalent to using a set of donut sized spares. :)

Jeff, it's fair if you want to DQ me this week. As usual, I got out of it what I wanted to. 👍

I think the idea was something like this:

Guy 1: Yeah! The tires I programmed are the most realistic thing ever! *tests, car understeers badly, spins, and generally behaves in a manner associated with only the most hardcore racing sims*
Guy 2: *watches* That'll never sell.
Guy 1: You're right. Let's set these aside and make some tires with a lot more grip and call them normal instead, so the customers won't complain about difficulty and stop buying the game.
Guy 2: That's the way!

---

Anyway, apparently the difference between normal and sim is huge for you to be able to run those times with totally stock cars.

Must be. Not much of a straightaway to take advantage of the hp bump for the rest of you. For most of the cars, I didn't have to lift in T1 and just a little for the last.

Anybody own a car in the game? Have you driven it to the edge? Are sim tires the real deal? If you answered all 3 with a Yes, then you may be a ghost. I know I would've met a violent end if the tires my truck sits on were as lousy. :)
