lap time challenge

Edit - Apparently I'm doing something wrong; ran a few laps with the Civic just to see where I stand, and I barely managed to break 2:08.

Not too far off, really, the first car I tried was the Saxo and I only made a 2:06.210 best lap, and the Civic has a much worse powerband. As I said before, it took me 4-5 cars to really get the hang of it.

Yeah, this ain't working out very well. So far, the lowest I've run was a 2:02 with the Mazda. This is becoming frustrating...

Well, don't kill yourself trying... I had a blast with this one but it wasn't with the pressure of knowing what time I was supposed to be going for.

And PS, it looks like Kingofweasles has me beat by a clean couple seconds, so maybe we should ask him what his secrets are for tackling Rally with FF's...

Normally I love rally racing, but this is the most annoying bunch of underpowered, understeering POS's I've ever had the displeasure of dragging out of the weeds to putter around a track with! *grumble grumble*

Mostly it's the track's difficulty level, but yeah. They'd be okay on a track that wasn't all hairpin turns. I've gotten to the point where I can generally hit about 2/3rds of the turns properly, but miscalculations and stupid mistakes keep dragging me way down on the rest. For me, a track with a wide variety of turns I can throw a car through sideways would be perfect for a rally race; this one just takes what little consistency I have and rips it apart halfway through the first lap.

But at least we've got someone else participating this week, so it's not all bad.

Just wait until I submit stock times. I'm thinking of dropping a foot out the door in the hairpins motorcycle stylee to see if I can get them to turn better.

I think that could safely get the job done! Serious, for every hairpin I dropped down to 30-40mph, dropping into 1st gear briefly.

Didn't want to run all of them. I've run Pugs a lot in rallys over the years, so I passed on them. Same with a couple more.

The spectators were laughing at me. Without race liveries they thought I was a lost tourist.

All stock with dirt tires. How come tires were 500 credits more for Japanese cars? Somebody is getting a kickback, fo sho. :)

Nissan Pulsar VZ-R N1= 2:09.037
Honda Civic Type-R '98= 2:12.104
Dodge Neon R/T= 2:16.165
VW Golf GTi 1.8T= 2:16.279
Ford Puma 1.7= 2:16.311
Opel Tigra 1.6i= 2:18.141
Citroen Saxo 1.6 VTS= 2:18.363

Pulsar is fast, but sounds like a cordless shaver.

Results are in for event 16, see post on previous page.

Next event is a follow-up of the last event. More FF rally awesomeness, this time without so many hairpins. Top three probable best cars plus one fan favorite as finalists.

GT2 race series 17th event announcement:

2nd round of Super 1600 and Super 2000 WRC at Smokey Mountain South
manufacturer's trophy finals

June 28th opening date, submit results by July 4th

Note: back to the normal 10 laps per car

Tuning allowed: Racing Modification, Full Professional Suspension, Sports Brakes, Brake Balance Controller, Customizable Gears, Clutch-3, Flywheel-3, Customizable LSD, and power modifications as listed below

Cars to pick from, heaviest to lightest:

Super 2000 WRC entries:
Opel Astra Sri 2.0I 16V, Turbo-3 and Muffler-2 = 270hp
Mazda Lantis Coupe Type-R 2.0, NA-2, Muffler-3, Engine Balance, Port Polish, and ROM = 270hp
Renault Megane 2.0 16V Coupe, NA-3, Muffler-3 = 266hp
Dodge Neon R/T 2.0, NA-2, Engine Balance, Port Polish, and ROM = 257hp

Super 1600 Junior WRC entries:
Nissan Pulsar VZ-R N1 1.6, NA-1, Muffler-1 and ROM = 221hp
Honda Civic Type R '98 1.6, NA-2 = 214hp
Opel Tigra 1.6I, NA-3 and Muffler-2 = 210hp
Fiat Punto GT 1.4, Turbo-2, Intercooler-2, Muffler-2, Engine Balance and ROM = 207hp

Take one or more cars from the list above for a spin doing test laps/time trial. On the honor system, in order to keep it fair and not a huge time commitment going for a perfect time, you get 10 laps to go for a best lap time after settling on your tuning (don't abuse the tuning laps for practice, keep them under 2 laps at a time please.)

When you submit your results, feel free to include the details of how you tuned your car and I'll include them in the race report I send out. Things like suspension and transmission settings for example, but also whether you drive AT/MT and what kind of controller if you want.

PM me your results as you get them, let the battle begin!

Kind of funny, but Heavy almost made it onto the leaderboard with his stock Pulsar just a couple-few seconds behind me and you...

But yeah, this is a different kind of race. I'm betting corner exit speeds will be crucial since there's not so much braking going on.

But yeah, this is a different kind of race. I'm betting corner exit speeds will be crucial since there's not so much braking going on.

I think keeping each car's speed up while cornering and maintaining momentum will probably be the real decider for this one.

Also, appolagies for not giving up any driving tips on rallying FF's; My internet connection has been quite spotty lately...

I'm sure my corner speeds were good. Jeff said his were 30-40mph and I was on the high side of that range. With stock power, it was hard to get a drift going. Who am I kidding, I can't drift, period. So I tried flicking the rear around with the e-brake, but my best times were done with squaring the corner and coasting to the apex. I only used the brake for T1 and the righthander at the bottom of the long hill. Say the corner was a lefty. On approach, I'd move as far right as I could, let off the gas, turn hard left, and then get back hard on the power at apex. But I'm still at a right angle to the apex when I do it.

I couldn't do that with more power. In more powerful cars, by the apex, you should be pointed in the direction you want to go. Get on that much power at a right angle and it's straight into the wall. In rally cars I usually approach from the middle and turn while jabbing the brakes with a rear bias. Helps to swing the rear around. Then floor it.

I'm only average at rallying, but I'm sure where you guys really killed me was on the straights, not the corners.

Right. Real lunch tosser going up and down, up and down, over the first section. Like first trip on a crab boat.

Stock on dirt tires:

Nissan Pulsar= 1:18.150
Honda Civic Type R '98= 1:19.783
Fiat Punto GT= 1:22.303
Renault Megane= 1:22.324
Dodge Neon= 1:23.836
Opel Tigra= 1:25.794

Once again, the Norelco, I mean Nissan, buzzed around quickest. Would be a good race between the Fiat and Renault. The Mazda Lantis must be in my game under another name because I couldn't find it. And I didn't run the Astra because one Opie, I mean Opel, is enough. :)

Ah, Lantis also known as the 323F Coupe '93...

Have run all the Super 1600's with the Punto GT coming out on top, Tigra right behind it, in the low 1:13's. Ran the Nissan first or else I'm sure it would've been close to being a top contender.

Was forced to make an unexpected ~23 hour, 1000+ mile round trip drive across five states, taking away my whole weekend. Currently dazed and crashing from an 18 hour sugar high. Will try to run the cars tomorrow, but may end up sleeping until noon instead, as I am unbelievably exhausted. Wish me luck! *collapse*

Nice! I love those! Even better when a hot girl you just met is involved! And you're going to New Orleans, and halfway there you realize it's Mardi Gras! (true story...)

But yeah, best of luck with the recuperation.

Sadly, this was nothing so interesting. Though there was a...fairly...hot girl once I got there. Had to come straight back though, so...yeah. In a car with no air conditioning. In the ridiculously humid southeast US. In the beginning of July. In a car jammed with people and wild kids. At least the trip out there was done at night with just two people in the car.

It was such a pleasant trip *blatant lies*

I could rant about it for hours, but I won't.

Anyway, the race.

I will run some cars later, but I probably won't have time for more than a few...sorry about that.

No worries. If I may, I'd recommend not racing the Lantis and Civic. Although the Civic handles nicely, its powerband is far steeper than the others, and the Lantis even more so.

Yeah, sorry, should've made an announcement. by the way, in all the cars you submitted times for, you were faster by about 1/2 second on average. But the last car I tried, the Astra, pulled in a 1:10.962, to beat your Neon by under 0.2. All in all, I think it's safe to say you were the better racer last week, without even taking into account your exhaustion.

I've been farming more and more and am frequently beat when I'm done for the day and all I can do is watch some programs and relax. Also, the lack of response from the majority of past participants is starting to wear on me, too. So I'm not sure, but this may be the end of the lap time challenge for me. If some people from the past chime in and ask for a renewal of the series, I'd be happy to keep it going. Or I may come up with another race for next week, we'll see...

And thanks for keeping me company here for so long, skynyrd and Heavy!

Wow, I'm surprised at that result! I can barely even remember racing at all, those few days are just a daze to me.

Farming sounds rough, even though I have no idea what particular type you do (all of it seems rough, from what little I know about it). Unless you're talking about Gold Farming or something like that... ; p

Anyway, It'll be a real shame if this doesn't continue. This has been without a doubt the most fun non-hybrid racing series I've ever participated in. The car selection, the track selection, everything. I can definitely see where lack of participation could really get to a person after a while, I've had similar things happen to my own projects as well, and it's never easy to deal with. You've done real well with this; I had a lot of fun. If this one does stop here and you ever decide to try something like this again in the future, you can count me in.

I say take a break Jeff, you've earned it. Having hosted multiple challenges in the Project Gotham Racing series and Forza, I know it's hard to sustain interest. These thing always fizzle after a bit.

You've done a great job as host. We've gone through just about every track and you enticed me to try dozens of cars I never would've given a glance to. I picked up a copy of GT2 earlier in the year because I was feeling a little retro. You've helped me to get much more out of it than I would have otherwise. I had a lot of fun. 👍

I say rest it for 6 months to a year and then try to resurrect it. Maybe by then new forum members will be ripe for something like this.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! I may have not particpated much, but I enjoyed it. *sigh* I guess someone SHOULD resreuct it later, I would right now, if anyone wants to try it again.

Okay, farm season is winding down, and for sure in November I'll have the time again to take care of business here. But ahead of that, I wanted to see if I could get some interest generated.

Here's what I'm thinking. A 5 or 10 race series where you pick cars from a list to have in your stable, and can pick which one to use on which track. Results not in points but in cumulative time off winner.

I've tested the cars with the following setups and they seem competitive against each other at Trial Mountain, a fairly balanced track, so among them some should be better at Autumn Ring say than others, and some should be better at Midfield/Red Rock than others. They're all cars you probably wouldn't use normally, being selected 1) for having low stock engine displacement per mass, 2) for needing to be moderately tuned to reach 5kg/hp, and 3) for being sports car body types for the most part.

Not only were all these cars close in time around Trial Mountain, I also looked at 400m, 1000m, and 1000m-400m times. While 400m time varied widely, the standard deviation of the 1000m-400m times was only 1.1% (that's when you subtract the 400m time from the 1000m time to get an idea of acceleration once you're up to speed.)

Take a look below and PM me a list of cars you'd like in your stable in order of preference, give me a list of 6-8 cars and you'll get your top four, plus the 5th as a swappable reserve, first come first served, only two people can have the same car. Send me your picks soon so you get the cars you want! I'll pick last.

All cars get Weight Reduction stage 1 and sports tires. And if you get semi-race suspension, front and rear must be same height and at least 110mm.

Interest has been generated. This list of cars is a big part of what I liked about the first series; it forced me to stop and take out those odd cars I pretty much skipped over before.

I think I'll take part, though it's almost certain I'll be floating around in the last third of the pack most of the time. I sent my choices, btw.

We've got 6 people in now! The list of taken cars has grown as well. Future entrants will not be able to choose any of these cars:
Silvia Spec S Aero
200SX Q's Aero '97
Civic Type R
Integra
Celica GT-Four '91
MR Spider
Lexus IS200

Just a heads up on where I'm going with this.

Probably just one event per week, but maybe 2 at a time if people think that's not too much and want it to go faster. First event listed below submitted by the end of the day next Sunday the 23rd, I'll post results on Mondays.

As for track selection, I'm doing something very different than what I did before. All sim mode. Starting with GT UK 2nd event at Trial Mountain. You'll be able to do test laps with your cars and then will have to decide on two to enter in the race. Each car can enter the event twice, race against AI, and report best total race time for each car (in testing, almost all of these cars made it into the 3:19's for me.) You have to fight through/be careful of traffic in addition to trying to go very fast.

These cars all win easily at GT UK-2, passing all competition by the end of the back straight on the first lap.

The next events get progressively harder until it's likely that you won't win, but will be having to concentrate more on being careful in traffic for the whole race. Eventually I'll allow race flywheel, triple plate clutch, weight reduction 3, and hard slicks as we work down the list.

Also note that you can swap in any fixed gears (normal, close, or super close), the one I listed with the car is best for Trial Mountain, with isn't the fastest track. Especially when you want to do some drafting, like at Grand Valley, you'll want taller gears so you don't rev limit early.

I'm thinking right now:
1) GT UK-2 Trial Mtn
2) Open Car Cup 2 Grindelwald
3) Touring Car Cup 1 Red Rock
4) 80's Sport 4 Seattle (add race flywheel)
5) Clubman Cup 3 Rome
6) GT Japan 3 Midfield (add triple clutch)
7) Lux Sedan 2 SSR5
8) Touring Car 2 Grand Valley (add weight reduction 2)
9) GT US 3 Laguna Seca
10) GT Euro-1 Apricot Hill (add Hard Slicks)
11) Pure Sport 2 Deep Forest (add weight reduction 3)

For people who jump in later or skip an event, you get a time one second slower than the slowest result for both of your times. Example of result for 1st event:

1) 3:18.555 from competitor A
2) +.055 from B
3) +.088 from A
4) +.144 from C
5) +.5 from D
6) +.8 from B
7) +1.1 from C
8) +1.5 from D

and then competitor E didn't participate, the rankings after this event would be:

A) +.088
B) +.855
C) +1.244
D) +2
E) +5 (+1.5 slowest +1 = +2.5 for both results)
