I can't turbo the car, not until I am something like 20 or 21 and on my open license.
Is Australia strict when it comes to modding cars? I've been trying to find some info, but it's just easier to ask a resident. đź’ˇ

I might be moving out to Melbourne for my job in the next 5 months or so and I want to bring my STI with me.... mostly because I like my car too much to sell it, I like my left hand drive, I doubt I'd be able to find an equally good car once I arrive and well I just bought the car lol. My car has a few mods though... minor things like exhaust, intake etc.

You should bring your Weds and sell them to Legendary. They look close enough to the Advans he wants. lol

Melbourne is a bit far from Brisbane. Besides, I think the 18" wheels would look odd on his car. They are for sale though. ;)

Yeah Australia is fairly strict on mods in general, you can do them but nearly everything you do needs to be certified and done properly. No cheap unroadworthy jobs.

The problem for me is that we have a really strict licensing system. There are 3 stages before you can drive any car and have the maximum amount of demerit points.
First is Learners Permit (what I am on for another few months). Where I am from that is held for a year, in that year you must log 100 hours of driving, 9 or so at night. You can drive any car as long as you are supervised by someone who has a full license.

After that is P1 (Provisional). You can drive either Auto, or Auto and Manual, depending on what you tested in. You can only drive a car under 210kw, with 6 cylinders or less and only naturally aspirated, unless its turbo diesel.

A year later you can go for P2, you hold that for 3 years, I am not 100% sure what that entitles though.

After all this, you're probably 50 and ready to die. You get your open license and can drive any car you want, so long as it is legal.

Long process .

Wow, that sounds pretty bad. I wonder if I'd have to retest for a license there... I have been driving for 5 years only in manual cars, and I have never had an accident, or traffic violation (on record). What I do know is that my car will have to be inspected upon arrival... yes upon arrival. Which means that if it fails, I have to ship it back to the US.

Are STIs common over there? I never saw one there. Only WRXs.

Yeah, they aren't that unaffordable so you see them occasionally, the manager of my store owns a WRX STI.

You shouldnt have to retest at all, our license is just as many other countries around the world, its fairly standard so we take mostly any.

The immigration websites aren't very clear, but I'm not worried about it. I'll retake my driver's test. I'm only worried that my car get denied entry... my car was 100% safety and emissions tested in the US. And left hand drive isn't illegal there... then again our tests are so shady that a race car with flames shooting out the back could probably pass.

Anyways thanks for the info!

Mate if your car is LHD it is going to have to be converted if it is less than 30 years old :/. So you are probably better off selling it unless you are extremely attached to it. It would be difficult to drive a car from the left anyway, especially coming out of parallel parks etc.

EDIT: Sorry, I hadn't really read your above posts till now. As much as it sucks to read what I just said, it is what it is. If you are loaded, go ahead and convert it but I can assure you it's not going to be cheap :/. It probably wasn't so smart to go and buy a car only to move to Australia for a job .

Well that is just wonderful. I'm not loaded, but I'm also not leaving my car behind. I didn't exactly know about going to Australia until after I bought the car...

The good news is I can still bring my car and legally drive it in the country, but only for one year. Which is pretty good because I don't know how long I would be there.

If that's the case, drive it for that year and if you are only sticking around a little longer after that you could leave it unregistered and as is for when you return home. You would need temporary transport in that time but that option is pretty good in my opinion.

Oh is that so. If you see a left hand drive STI with US plates on some Aussie track in the near future that might be me. :D

Got all the windows retinted today. Its the darkest tint allowed here in Queensland.

I'll take some pictures of it on the weekend after I wash it but here is an updated photo seeing through the back window now that it's possible.

Looks like I have the wheels sorted out now. Next week I will be buying some Volk TE37 Replicas. They come with shot tires, around 10% left apparently. The good thing is the wheels are fairly cheap and buying new tires wont make them unaffordable at all. They should arrive in the next two weeks with tires being purchases soon after.

Here is the dilemma though. I have the current wheels and tires (obviously) but the two rears have around 90% tread left and the front have around 60ish, haven't properly checked yet. I am not sure if I should keep them on until they are fairly gone or if I should take them off and keep them for future use or something.

The wheels i'm buying are these, 17x7 with ET40:

They need a clean but dont have marks on them or the powdercoat apparently.

No more dilemma. Just as I ask for details to pay for the wheels he tells me they've been sold.

So instead I have bought these, extremely hard to find brand new. STI tail lights, new with the boxes. They should be here by next week if all goes well and they should only take a short while to install as it's a factory part.

Cheers guys!

It's just a matter of finding wheels which are affordable and look good, that's a bit difficult .

Depends on your definition of 'affordable'
Not much, being a student and all :P.

Around 1100 or less, including tyres. So they can come with tyres that have life in them on they can be cheap with me needing to buy tyres as well.

EDIT: Are you going down to powercruise this year?

No, I won't be doing Powercruise, I want to get all my little projects I have going on with it at the moment finished before I take it out for a proper outing. Man, that is a low budget for rims and tires (my tires alone were more than that). I think you are best to just run the rims you have now and keep saving for a better set. You could afford some nice springs and shocks and lower it a little, it would look better even with the rims you have now.

Yeah I can't afford to make the thing a race car . I kinda just have to go with budget tyres and second hand rims. Those ones above were going for 300 for the four of them, and there really wasnt anything wrong with them at all.

Is it really worth dropping the thing with the wheels that are on it now? The current shocks on it are not too far away from being deadset awful, they are the hardest things I have ever seen. So they may be in for an upgrade at some stage.

EDIT: Failing the whole buying cheap wheels thing, I could look at something like these. They are cheap as anything and would still improve the look. They can be found in gold fairly easily too:

I was going to suggest going with OEM wheels. Seriously though, I think if your suspension right now isnt flash then I would be concentrating on that, maintenence over modification. Put in some descent shocks, lower it a bit with good springs to suit, and it will not only handle better but look great. Lowered cars on so so rims look better than nicer rims on cars that are up high, in my opinion. I was running my stock wheels after I lowered it with my Teins for quite a while until I could afford the wheels I wanted, and it looked way better than when it wasn't lowered. I dare say it would have looked better than running my SSRs at stock ride height! It will surprise you how a simple reduction in height can improve the look so much.

Having no clue about the cost of actually buying better shocks and springs, what would be a reasonable price? And where would you recommend going to get that done? If that's not too unaffordable it does sound like a good plan.

Not sure on prices, I'd call Autobarn/Repco/Supercheap and get a price for a complete set of shocks for your car, ask about KYB, or Koni. They should also have a King Springs catalogue when you call them so get a price for them too - they will give you a choice of either Low, Super Low and Ultra Low. The choice is yours, I think Super Low, Low just isn't enough of a drop for me and Ultra would be too much. As far as getting someone to do it I expect your local mechanic would PROBABLY charge somewhere in the region of $60 a corner or something. If you felt like coming to Wynnum I could do it for you for a 24 pack lol

Alrighty I might ring around tomorrow then đź‘Ť.
And I might take you up on that offer actually, I go to school at Clayfield so I might just come around one day after school. I'll have to get my stepdad or something to buy the 24 pack but yeah, sounds like a plan!

The new tint must give you a better vibe driving the car since it's always in your sight.đź‘Ť
